RED future...

Unless you are a production and you live in Louisiana where 25% tax breaks are the norm. :)

But even still, taxes on that 2500 is only 217.

Jim made the comment once that if purchasing the Red is stretching your budget beyond the market for making that back in revenue, it's probably not a smart idea to purchase the Red.

Mr. Lyon

Is there still a flat spot on your head from where your parents dropped you on it when you were a baby?

Maybe. But I haven't placed an order yet, so I'm talking about adding cost to my purchase as well. Maybe it's me, but I'd rather get things done rather than worry about them on set when all I want to do is worry about things I'm supposed to worry about.

Finner, you seemed worried that the camera cost rise would make it 75-100 grand. I'm saying only $2,500 more per cam which would add significantly to the red team's budget. You just seem to be extremely selfish if you expect the camera to stay the same price with all the demands we are making as a community. You said yourself that some of these ideas were the best ever and Jim said ideas cost money. You can't have both.

Wow only talking a price up on a product you want to purchase by $2,500. You have a real knack for business Chris. I have met business people that have the ability to get cheaper prices on a product they want but your revolutionary idea of paying more then the retail price for a product is a unique one. I have a good feeling about you Chris and I think your going to go far.

Maybe if we are lucky Jim will take up your approach on bussiness and start to pay all his suppliers 15% over their price quotes. I can see this idea really taking off.

On a side note I have a 2008 Subaru outback for sale right now. I am asking $27,950 cnd but for you chris I would be willing to let you drive it away for only $31,000. PM me with when you would like to pick it up.

You are totally missing the point. I tried explaining, but you don't seem to be able to understand so I'm not going to oblige your condescending comments after this one.

Does this mean you don't want the car?

I haven't placed an order yet either. I think it should be raised by $20,000. The price is just too low for me to commit at this point. It needs to come up to what I'm willing to spend.

Maybe it's me, but I'd rather get things done rather than worry about them on set when all I want to do is worry about things I'm supposed to worry about.

What exactly are you so worried about?

Are you worried that the camera is useless? I think if it were we'd have heard about it already.

Are you worried that it might break down on you when you can't afford it to? Get two of them for redundancy, which incidentally is cheaper at 17,500 than at 22,500 :)

Just a thought.

PS. Equipment failure happens at every level. Get insurance :)

I'm not worried about camera failure, I'm just wanting a better product so as I don't have to worry about "inadequacies" in the blue channel here or not getting a good clean HDMI tap there. All the things that have been talked about I'd like to have as they could help avoid problems on set or in post or just make life easier or that much better.

I seem to be the only one to be pushing this price jump, but it appears to be needed....
I dunno. I'm just not seeing the big difference if a moderate price jump was made for future Red purchases.

Sorry Chris, Finner's got it pegged. For the life of me I can't understand what you're on about that Red needs the money to improve the camera....that's the argument that priced cameras out of most of our economic capabilities in the first place. On making profit, Red accessories aren't cheap by the way. They cost as much as the camera. I'm very sure that the company will be making very good money in the short and long term with the camera, the system, their 4K projectors and the vast array of other parts that are needed to revolutionize the industry. Jim is not just pissing a small part of his vast fortune into the wind here. Also of note is that we haven't heard from any of the first hundred users that they are really disappointed with the build quality or the customer service from Red.
Have you seen or worked with the camera yet? It should alleviate most of your concerns, as the bugs are being worked out at a fairly expedient rate, and by the time one gets into your hands they should all be worked out.
Speaking of which, you should order and put money down on a camera first, before going about how it should be more expensive. This is nonsense.
If you're so cavalier, ship 2500 dollars, or better yet, make it 5000, to charitable causes, if it means nothing to you.

Jacking up the price would give sony and the boys great ammunition. see we told you they couldn't do it for that price. see if you want the quality its going to cost you blah blah blah. fact is only the body and red lenses cost less. every other little bit we have to add isn't that far off what you'd have to pay on other cameras. they are making a profit on volume and accessories. you can bet you're bottom dollar sony didn't have 2000 or more orders for their rig before it was released. people bought in because this is what made it affordable and for most of us dropping another 5k on it maybe the difference between having the camera and then adding pieces later or not buying it at all.

I think for most people on this board this is a lot of money even at the price its at. to even have a working camera that'll just about do the basics it'll cost you 25k. some of us are even saving for it. an extra 5k could throw us out two months or kill a project we wanted to do.

maybe some of you are using 25k bundles as draft exluders or door stops. I'm not one of them.

Additional thoughts for Chris:
a. why are you worrying about the Red team's budget?
b. come to think of it, why are you worrying?

Just chilax man. After all, Red is being built in southern california

On a side note I have a 2008 Subaru....

The Hoff drives a SUBARU??? NOT THAT BLACK TALKING CAR!!!! NOOOOOOOO!!!!!

Well, unlike Chris, I HAVE placed an order (like most of the people on this forum), and I sure as heck want to see them start shipping again. . . and in big numbers. . . soon! I've got projects to work on! The worst nightmare would be for RED to get what all of my friends call "Stephen's disease" ("the relentless drive to make things perfect so as to never have to actually release anything to the public"). This Southern California mindset could be working against us!

I'll dare to say that we shouldn't forget something.

This camera is already amazing.

Even with all the issues - it's amazing.

Come on! This is a level of technology that shouldn't be available for maybe 10 or more years at this price point...

This kind of technology,... available now.... and in this price range... is a thing from the future, it's not supposed to be here. It's the future now...

So, we shouldn't forget to appreciate that and we shouldn't be too critical and\or demanding.

All the wish-lists that were posted in this thread certainly have good grounds, but many things should rather refer to a future RED TWO.

From my humble POV, things that are priority right now are:

- the noise issues [I believe RED stated that these are already solved or, at least, a big improvement has been made]. In this respect, maybe - selectable [higher] datarates for the REDCODE. Shouldn't be a big deal.
- all the preview options working simultaneously - this is crucial.
- cold\hot shooting issues - also crucial.
- working audio [it's already happening]. And let's hear the quality of those AD\DA converters. This is the first camera that offers 24 bit recording [correct me if I'm mistaken] and this is great! Let's see how it performs.
- overall camera stability\reliability.
- EVF\RED Drive\LCD - crucial accessories, that have to be available-and-working-stably soon.

Many other things [menu font, boot times, higher fps, button assignments, etc.] will be naturally improved and added with further firmware builds.

So, that's that.

If the above problems are solved and the camera works stably, people like me would be more than happy and satisfied with the RED ONE [I see that we're quite a (wild) bunch].

Punto.

If RED one is $100k value for $17,500
RED 8k $350k in value for...$61,250?
