  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED future...

Okay, we will just leave it at there. Thanks for the interaction.

Sincerely,

Joofa

If you don't see the problem with Mr. Jannard identifying the cooks who cook his secret recipe, then I don't think you understand how ANY industry works.

Sensor designers come from Loompaland, which is a region of Loompa, a small isolated island in the Atlantic Ocean. The sensor designers would end up being preyed upon or attacked by Whangdoodles, Hornswogglers and Snozzwangers, which also lived there. Jim ended up inviting them to work at his factory and get away from their natural predators.

It's all on wikipedia...

Okay, that was just hilarious! :)

Actually, I think they are all working on Jim's new Fijian island. That's probably why he bought it in the first place, to avoid tiresome immigration problems for them :).

(See his island here, and it's a beaut: http://jannard.com/links.html Congratulations, Jim - bet that was a long time coming! :) )

Yowzaa. Can't wait to see the future. Even though it is here now.

Mike

Something tells me we're gonna be seeing more about Red's Full-Frame 35mm Epic soon.

Jim,

When I can pick up a 65mm Digital camera for less than $25,000 I'm gonna look back and say....Damn Jim's the man. I mean not that you aren't already...just you'd be that much more.

Me too, Tom ... insanely exciting stuff. I'm happy Jim and the gang are putting so much time/attention/resourced into the sensor program :)

Ok, I'll wait for Monstro then.

The fact is that currently the M-X sensor has a combination of resolution, dynamic range and frame rates that is not matched by any sensor ever made for mass production. I'm not even aware of a military or engineering one-off that beats it. And it is only our second sensor. I am also seeing what's coming...

Jim

If the Epic MX 5K could do a live full sensor de-bayer to a 6-part HD microwave encrypted data stream in realtime, in a vacuum, at near infra-red, you'd probably get a purchase-order from the NRO.

or Mick Jagger, for that matter?

Oh no! Mick specifically required that he not be named!
Well thanks a lot Terry, you've just trainwrecked the whole program.
I'm afraid it's going to be EOS 5Ds for most of you now.

I just want to know when Red will go public... it would for sure be the next apple stock. Professional tools, then consumer products based around those tools. Sounds like a good idea to me!

Why? Taking a company public makes you accountable to a board of directors, as well as shareholders, which can be extremely interfering... A lot of small, innovative companies become large, inefficient, bureaucratic corporations because of that...

If there's one thing that can take a company from being product or customer focused to being money and profit focused, it's an IPO...

Exactly From my understanding Red has funds from some various sources....maybe a little company called "Oakley". No need for investors, Jim does what he wants, and if that means making that totally overkill Camera then why not. :)

I'm mean think about it major corporations like Sony, Canon, and Panasonic aren't pushing 4K because there "Board of directors" goes yeah 4K....were not even shipping TVs yet.

There's nothing wrong with being profit focused: create amazing products and you will make money. There is, however, something wrong with having to answer to a numsbkull board of shareholders who have never actually used a pro camera let alone designed one.

I would be willing to bet they fired up a FF35 6k++ sensor, and got well over 24fps if they "only" did so on an Epic body.

Only one way to know. Jim, can you let us see a sample or two of your most recent work? :)

To be honest I don't even understand the concept of 'Red is a scam'. Who started that? [/QUOTE said:
Well I was one of them :-)

When Jim first announced I was hugely sceptical, in fact I said that it was a great idea to set up a company and take deposits on a camera and then close without delivering.

Jim and I had a "minor disagreement" at NAB in 2006, he thought that I had been rubbishing him and in fact I'd been rubbishing the idea of delivering a camera that was starting from scratch by November of that year.

Anyway, that was then....

I didn't know Jim's background at the time.

I have since said many times that RED and Jim in particular have turned the film business on its head and not just with their cameras.

We wouldn't have all the new PL mount lenses we have now if it wasn't for RED.

Alexa would be a dream on the horizon to be delivered in a couple of years if not for RED

Sony wouldn't have cut their prices on the F35 and the 9000PL if RED hadn't existed.

I could go on and on, particularly in the area of 3D but I won't :-)

Things change and we have to live with and welcome that change.

So thank you RED for bringing some excitement back into the film business.

Wow Jeff. That post is a bit of a landmark. Unless I've missed others that said the same.

You are gaining more and more respect in my book; not saying that you are concerned about it.

So true about the PL lenses, and Alexa, and Sony.

Can't wait for you to get your paws on an Epic for some good ole GB-testing!

If I've managed to get things right, working at Red Digital Cinema must already be a unique experience. The only disadvantage can think of is, if one needed to go elsewhere, it might be a challenge to find any similar and as exicting and dynamic environment pushing ... no, guess better to say, encouraging its employee to reveal their very best skills.

Second, this forum and the chance to follow and participate in the discussion around all the developments is also highly unusual. At least, I've learnt so much over the years of so many issues, that don't know what it would have been without all this. So, as long as all this is going on will try to enjoy it. It sounds like there are all the reasons to keep the expectations high.

Jim, when you post like this... your work sounds like a living good scifi novel. And the future is now :)

So... You figured out a way to get rid of read-reset all together? or a way to do away with the CFA and measure each energy level directly? Or you can measure photon spin to reconstruct 3D images? What? What?
