  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED failed me again

simply great news.

European service would be great. But, reading all this... it sometimes seems almost EVERY Red one is an individual monster in itself with its own whimsical temper, and that EVERY red camera is doomed to regular failure. Is getting one really working when needed isomewhat exceptional. Again, which part of which iceberg is that ? If all this is just a bias and if those who are happy with perfectly working cameras seldom speak, the global impression is not good at all. Any rough statistics about service returns ? That could greatly help to build confidence...

NOT my experience. Individual: Yes. Doomed: No.

thanks Gunleik, you make me feel a bit more comfortable !! Do you plan to post more tests (build 16) on your site, when you decide to upgrade ?

So, I spend the better part of my day working on, testing or using at any given time no less than 7 different RED ONES.

The serial numbers range from 006 to the 1400's.

I think that I have a little room to speak here.

The first and the easiest. Power and plates.

Yes Red is aware. Yes it will be/is being fixed. I have seen new, more robust mounts.

Each camera it's own monster.

Sure. My car will have different quirks than yours. The second the camera is pulled out of a box each one is living a different life. I have one that has seen desert, jungle, heat, artic temperatures, hot bake houses, torential storms, car mounts and even being on a boat as it sank in the indian ocean. It is safe to say that said camera might act differently than one I pulled out of a box the other day. However, I will also say that I had one camera that I pulled out of the box, started to shoot with it and it immediately stopped mounting drives. So yes, each one is it's own monster.
Most of our monster have played nice from day 1.

I can't say what each of you may find. I can not say how the ones who are having problems have acting leading up to said issues. I can say that I would never go out on a professional job with out banging the wholly hell out of the camera first.
Oh and to those that complained that 16 was supposed to bring us out of beta....

16 is still in beta!!!!

geez.

I am sorry to say it seems like a crap shoot. Many have had no issue what so ever. Some have complained of symptomatic cameras for quite some time.

I think some are user issues and some are not.

My advice. Get your camera, bang on it and bang on it, oh and bang on it before you put it out there. Figure yours out and get any bugs worked out when you can do it without a project looming over you.

I have watched 35mm cameras go down and I have seen VX2000's crap out. Tangible things break and technology will fail. If you think it's never going to happen you are out of your mind. However there is a threshold for acceptable levels. Some seem to be nearing theirs and thats fine. Our cameras have been solid troopers. My threshold hasn't even been challenged.

So when those of you who are fed up decided to walk away from the RED camera.... I will be happy to service the customers that still want it.

Europe service center soon...

I don't even live there, and I'm very happy to hear this news because it, among other things, indicates how willing the company is to respond to their customers' needs and to step up to whatever challenges arise. Very nice. Thank you.

I may. Build 16 will call for a new round of tests. My plan is to use a Short for that test. That short will not be posted in its whole, but...

Currently there is just too much to do with B15.

buhot - your post #89 in this thread was red-devilish doom-speak! And #92 a show of calm support: nice contrast in those images.

I started from the beginning and didn't come close to your summation. It's a rollercoaster for some, and not (growth)painless for anybody, but no-one's sugarcoating it.

I noted that the thread-bearer may have an actual lemon on his hands and that this is possible even in a proven company that's known for it's engineering excellence and been around for a hundred years. (Driver) Owner/operators can help themselves and their investment out by learning as much as they can before they head out on the road. Don't drive or buy blind. And who's driving your bus, anyway? (not personal)

Bootup's a biggie, though. If you pull up in that Singapore Sling with the California pinstriping, go to burn some filmic rubber, and it stalls, well.... I think I'll go check out some more RED tech posts and awesome "footage" to calm my nerves.

Personally I'm waiting for SEPT? and the delivery of my RED One. Someone else said that us in line may be lucky in the way that fewer bugs and issues should be present in future builds. True, but I wouldn't mind shooting "RFN" as my eldest karate-kicking brother used to say as he prompted me to the confectionary with his order!

PS: for those of you non-arthouse viewers: R= Right; N= Now; F= %#$@*!

It's fun to see that some people ask a simple question about whatever and there's like... 4 replies, and someone has a bad time with the camera and he gets 956789025367 posts... I'm an early enthusiast since the very beginning, much longer than I have been a registered user of this forum, and some know just how much passionate and over the top I have been in many occasions on this forum, but could we get more concrete posts, advices, solutions, clear views... And less endocrinated, let-me-do-my-sales-pitch, please-don't-hate-the-camera-it's-so-beautiful??? I love the way Jarred, Jim and all the other guys calmly and professionnaly respond to us (as do some great redusers) I have no experience of their service and support but what I hear is pretty amazing. I'm waiting for mine, so, and all this is really interesting and informative for me and a lot of others. This forum and us, as a community of users, artists, customers, could greatly benefit from a less emotionnal place to exchange our experience. This is in my taste what this forum should be. At the edge of summer 08, does Red (and us) still need Red afficionados cerberus? Thanks Meryem for your clever and underestimated and never mentionned complications, and Off for your always serious experience although often stiff ;), and I sympathize with this thread bearer. I can imagine the feeling if it happened to me. I'd be devastated, really.

PS: A second body? Yes, it's a great idea, makes sense, commercially. Although, it takes the "affordable camera for all indy filmakers" concept in a surreal direction... For owner-directors, it's really stupid. It should just work (within a decent rate of fail/non-fail prorata, like anything else OC)...

PPS: Panasonic/Sony/Canon service isn't a great example to demonstrate Red's or anyones quality of support. Other people being idiots doesn't make anyone a genius. Red will benefit from our objectivity. They already have our love.

Lewis, the whole 'you really need a second camera' has me thinking twice about everything. I just want to shoot movies, not commercials. I've learned to accept the workflow issues..but it's getting close to buy or bye time for me.

Build 16 is giving me hope, but physical build quality problems are giving me pause. Seems like I'll have to wire my jaw to stay in 'just' the right position in order to keep things from failing. (kidding). I simply won't have the money to buy 2 camera bodies. If not having 2 is considered poor pratice, then...don't know what I'm going to do.

I agree. I shoot movies too. Not commercials. I have money, but not moneeeeey! Although I'm in full swing with Red, and certainly won't reconsider anything, otherwise we'd never do or jump into anything, I'm very interested in all this and the questions it brings. I'm more than confident in this product, and I am convinced this is an amazing camera. I am more conviced by the spirit, energy and faith than by the pros and cons. I think Jim is avisionary business man and trust his passion beyond the commercial or business spirit other companies develop for the sake of money and rentability, even though I am sure he doesn't do all that just for our cute smiles... One thing to keep in perspective, even if I feel less concerned about that, is that all of us are here and customers for very different reasons. I respect every facet or reasons people have to be in this adventure, whether it's for business or art. The challenge of making this camera is huge and exciting, and to be part of it makes me proud and hopeful. Yet, luck is a factor, or badluck for this matter, and as we say in french, a lot of us will "wipe the plaster off our shoulders"... But eventually, we will have freedom and quality that will transcend in our work. And that's priceless.
