RED Epic verus Panasonic GH2

As usual with these things, it's pretty hard to tell anything useful from this test. Even if Vimeo compression didn't completely invalidate the comparison (which it does), all the Epic daylight tests were shot at 240 ISO instead of 800, costing the Epic at least 1.5 stops of dynamic range. Add to that the fact that there is no description of post workflow, making it virtually impossible to draw serious conclusions.

It was said on the comments that the original 1080p will be uploaded.

Hi,

After using EPIC M for last two months I cannot help but laugh at this kind of comparisons..Just my POV...

Could you be more specific? Most equipment comparisons are usually filled with "my camera is better" kind of comments, but we should be above that in here so lets discuss this in an intelligent way instead.

Wow....the last shot got me. 5K soft & grainy EPIC... HD Panasonic sharp and clean...

After my many years and months of shooting MX and EPIC.... I've never seen an image from RED so badly done for a test.

This is 800 asa EPIC through a the softest lens I own...
I can't see for the life of me how this guy could make it any worse than this. ... but hey.. he did.

Really? :001_rolleyes:

Don't get me wrong the Hacked GH2 is amazing at $800, I'll probably pick one up soon.
The iPhone 4S looks pretty good too, can't wait for some sweet hacks on that ; )

It really helps to know what you are doing before attempting any sort of qualitative testing.

Never trust a test by a guy doing a bleach bypass Magic Bullet Effect on his Introduction description.

That's a joke. But only a half-joke.

These guys shoot nice Wedding Videos, I think they should stick with what they are really good at.

They are not scientist or camera tech.

But just for kicks, they are just trying to say "The tools I have is good enough for your wedding".

LOL

Hehe

P. S.

It's not the tools that you have to worry about.

It's the IO errors you need to worry about.

IO = Idiot Operator

Even though the resolution and sharpness seems to be good on GH2, it has serious video look in it. That's when I need to use DSLR I will always pick Canon because even though its not as sharp it producess way more pleasing looking files.

It's true, I saw some tests with GH2 that has Angenieux 24-290mm T2.8 PL and at 1080p it easy beats in sharpness Alexa, F35, RED1, Epic, all Canon DSLRS, etc.

Even you can shoot anamorphic at 4:3...and more...

The funnies thing is that some people buy expensive camera and think to become cinematographer or even filmmaker right-away...

But probably you've got an idea that any future high-end cine digital camera will get cheaper soon...gap is shrinking very fast...a sort of fly into nowhere could approach some of camera makers soon...

Also we still have to wait for Nov 3rd to see how RED tailored Scarlet with specs and price(s)...

There is a time and place for everything.

There is a tool for every job.

I love RED but there are time when I just can't justify bringing my RED.

Like most wedding video shoots, and when I can't have the right security for my RED.

Canon is my 2nd choice.

Panasonic is 3rd

It would be great to see comparison made by professionals. Zacuto had the most advanced comparison to date made by real pro's this year but from some reason RED didn't want EPIC to be part of it. Maybe next year.

And the point of this 'comparison' was what exactly ?

This is the biggest bunch of bullshit I have ever read.

First of all, his scientific approach was to shake the branches. Secondly, if the test doesn't have people in it, where I can see faces, I don't care.

I use the hacked GH2 every days since its birth.
I have 4 of them.
With some of the best lenses and lights. I like it very much, more than 7D and 5D.

But, without seing it, this test make me laught.

As soon as Scarlett will be here, I will go Scarlett without any hesitation. The GH2 (even hacked) is NOT a camera but produce the best picture for the bucks.
