  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Red epic atom 3d rig - first look - element technica neutron scarlet 3d rig

I was under the impression the Epics will sync with each other without external sync?

that's what some of the rumors were a while back, that is now shattered of course.

...things change constantly at Red. Keep up!

Epic can sync from camera to camera without external sync.
This is especially useful for offspeed, moco, etc.

However, having a genlock sync input helps phase lock
timecode to frame time while also locking monitor outputs
to genlock (good for SIP, etc).

So you can run without external sync depending on
what your requirements are.

well that is great news.

That said I doubt any of use will ever run without the "optional" sync box...

Most of the s3D productions now require Video Village 3D monitoring also we always using a transvideo monitor (or something like it) to adjust/align the rig...therefore we need that sync box it seams...

Now what would really be cool is if we could see a muxed image in the red monitor!

wish list stuff I guess....for now let get the cameras out there!

Deanan,

Can you please elaborate a bit? I have tested with Gen10 and found shutter phase even highest shutter speeds to be dead on. Does camera to camera sync without an external genlock maintain perfect shutter phase?

Just so I understand, if you aren't using external monitoring and timecode isn't important, the Epics will sync with shutters in perfect phase at any frame rate?

[edit: I didn't see Jason's post when writing mine]

Thanks,
P

I am so excited about having internal cabling. Our quasar is wonderful, but it is tough when you have so many aks to put on it. Makes it a cabling extravaganza. Internal WLCS/Genlock/etc is going to be amazing.

So....you are saying if shooting 3d you need external sync then? That is a fact? or can/could that change shortly? or are you saying you need external sync if shooting 3d....epics can sync from camera to camera---but only good for offspeed, moco??

3D normal rates: use genlock or camera to camera sync
3D varispeed at multiple of project rate: use genlock or camera to camera sync
3D varispeed at odd rates: use camera to camera sync
3D/2D moco: use camera to camera sync

This is not for 3D but relevant to frame rate and external genlock sync issues.
Noticed when trying to set the frame rate to 12.5fps for some under cranking on a Moco rig that the camera would not accept 12.5 fps but changed it to 12.512fps. We are in a 25fps / PAL region project and the genlock (a Gen10) is setup so that an HD 1080 25fps genlock signal is feeding to camera and an SD 50Hz signal to the Moco ops controller. Would be ideal to have a true multiple of the project/genlock framerates but for some reason the Epic will not allow the 12.5fps that we want exactly.

Can someone tell me how to cable and set that 'cam to cam' sync ?
Does the sync come out of the three bnc sync cable, and into the other cam, or ?

Thanks

I would love to know how to sync from camera to camera too.

I have talked with red tech support about this very issue and was told that the camera to camera shutter sync is not working yet. Is this still the case?

It looks like the cable needed for this is on Page 161 of the manual... RS232 control.

A 4-pin LEMO connector supports RS232 remote control for stereoscopic camera image capture, and third party metadata ingest applications.
The shutter Sync Output signal acts as an immediate response hardware tally of a scan. This is useful for 3D or motion control applications where a slave camera or lighting device needs to be synchronized to a master camera.
Alternatively, this output pin may be used as a GPO (General Purpose Output) tally, whose function is programmed in the USER KEYS menu. Default is Record Tally.

Can anyone confirm this?
