So I couldn't find anything on this, maybe I'm being lost in the terminology. But There's a chance that I might be working with some R3d files but have no access to a normal editing suite. Instead I'll need to transcode the R3d files to something else that an editor like ULead or iMovie could handle. (Don't give me crap, I'm traveling and have no access to my normal equipment).

Is there a program that I can get for free that will convert raw R3d files to a standard format with something like h264 encoding so I can use the files in a consumer editing suite?

I'll need this in the next few days, any help would be great!

That's Red Alert & RedCine are for. You can get it from Red.com/support. Alternatively, get FCP n edit with the proxies 1st.

Hi Yean,

Ok I'll check those two out. BTW, I do have FCP, but In another country on another computer. I didn't actually know I'd be doing this until I got here to Bangkok and I was asked short notice to shoot and edit this. So we'll see how it goes.

To make sure (and I'll try my best to test it myself) either RedAlert or RedCine will transcode my files to a usable format for something like iMovie or Ulead?

Try Clipfinder (link in my signature). It's free.
Note that you need to have the REDAlert package and RED Quicktime Codec installed to work with it.
Let me know if you need more info.
Cheers,
Hans

REDrushes is designed exactly for this purpose. It will scale down to SD and it's free.

Sorry you have to edit RED in iMovie. So that begs the question ... how are you going to finish this job once edit is done?

Thanks for all the support guys (and/or gals?). I'll look into all of those to see what works best for me right now.

Editblog: I'm not sure what you mean by "finish". Color correct? Final output medium? Resolution? To be honest, this is going direct to the internet and POSSIBLY to a promo DVD. So it's not a hugely intensive shoot with high production values (aside from the possible inclusion of a RED). At any rate it will be 1,000,000 times better than anything they already have.

Again, thanks for the help.

By finish I mean conform/online from your edit made with the proxies or converted clips (like you are doing in iMovie) back to the .R3D files. It seems a shame to shoot "raw" and then finish with low quality converted files. That begs the question, why shoot RED in the first place? It's like shooting film and then only doing a one-light transfer to Beta SP. I understand what you mean if it's just going to web. If that's the case then RED was probably overkill to shoot on. I just always try to ask that question of finishing since it seems a lot of RED shoots are converted to ProRes or edited off proxies without ever going back and finishing with the .R3Ds and the quality that can bring. It's a shame really .....

I fully agree that it seems a waste and overkill... but it will be my first opportunity to shoot with RED and I intend to do it alot in the future, so to be honest I want to shoot it on RED mostly for the learning experience. That and my other option is a sony consumer hand-cam. So if given the option of having a crappy fixed lens and horrible compression codec or using a professional setup that will allow me to explore a little bit more of the artistic site of "filming". I'll choose that in a heartbeat.

On windows, the "Virtualdub" (freeware) and Redcode plugin (freeware) seem to be working ok, and output audio too. Haven't tested it in depth. Obviously output is 8bit, and audio 16bit (but each channel can be normalized seperately)..
