Hello,

I shot with my RED Epic 4K and I used this lens CANON EF 70-200 MM F/2.8L IS II USM LENS.

I don't understand why some pictures are grain and noise in video. Why colors are pale? I don't understand why pictures are not sharp. Do you know why?

The crocodile, the kids are okay (90%)

Other pictures are not

Thank you so much for your help,

I attached the file.

Best,

Jerome

Hi Jerome,

Extremely difficult to tell on the low resolution images, but there's one clear thing I spotted.

The shot of the gorilla is front focused on some of the foreground, see the grass and leaf on the ground. So that gorilla will clearly be out of focus. The same can be said for the "rear" of the elephant shot.

As for grain and noise, these images are too small to see any of that.

The color we need a bit more information at what we are looking at. Is this REDlogFilm? One of the REDgamma gamma spaces?

If you use copy.com or something similar and export some .R3D snapshots we can take a look and see what's going on more clearly than the small flickr jpgs.

Locking critical focus is a fundamental skill formotion picture production. It require practice and you certainly can be assisted by getting familiar with the in camera focus tools. I have a feeling that flamingo shot is also not the desired exposure you were after.

Please take a quick look at and read some of the Data Sheets and Charts here:

Particularly the exposure and focus related subjects as they can assist with capturing what you are looking for.

Variable NDs are handy, but even the best ones (love me some Heliopan) will soften the image a bit. Suggest you check that the back focus is spot on with your Canon mount up.

Bear in mind that the default viewing image rendered per metadata is simply a starting point with a nominal "development" used to reconstruct the Bayer CFA data captured. If you nail focus, don't underexpose and your key light has good CRI (or daylight) then some adjustments in RCX-P (or 3rd party app) should yield a sharp image with plenty of color saturation. If it still seems soft and weak, suggest you pop the contrast a bit more as that typically increases the perceived sharpness significantly.

I shoot with my Canon 70-200 2.8L frequently and with proper processing am able to get images as sharp as I desire.

Hello Phil, Thank you so much for your reply. I really appreciate, very useful, and interesting. I am going to check the link. Do you have an email? I am going to send you my R3D snapshots.

Thanks again, Best, jerome

Is there any reason you shoot 4K on 5K sensor?
I don't understand why some pictures are grain and noise in video.
ISO level is too high for the exposure
Why colors are pale?
check your Color/Gamma settings, this is easily fixed in camera or in post
I don't understand why pictures are not sharp. Do you know why?
Because some of the pictures you attached are soft focus, because Red cameras don't have in camera sharpening and because still frame from the footage shot with relatively slow for photography shutter speed will not look as sharp as DSLR image
