  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED - DSLRs and where the market is heading.

Mmm... I have talked people out of shooting the 7D and using RED instead. It's pretty easy because I have both cameras so I don't really have any particular care for what we shoot. For most narrative RED is just a better camera. I'm on the list for an EPIC. There's a reason for that. I have a lot of faith in the guys at RED to stay ahead of the curve. I sometimes think some of their pricing may need to drop.

The 7D is pretty ugly at 1080P. But man, there's one of me saying that for 100 other guys saying "wow! looks awesome!!". That is what it is out there.

But Canon really could do something amazing with their next set of cameras and get even my attention. If they get raw going on the 7D chip with no line skipping it'll be a RED and probably have more dynamic range given what their stills do. That'll be scary.

I kinda wonder if the whole 2/3" Scarlet is something that should just turn into s35 Scarlet. If Canon is really bringing a 7D chip to a movie camera for under $10k then the game is on for s35mm.

And keep shrinking EPIC if you can!!! :-)

Let's make that 2 of us not keen on returning to SD shooting, which is what "Canon betacams" actually deliver in 1080p codec.

Given Canon's success, what most likely will be the next 'big' feature set on the upcoming cameras?

For what I'm seeing from a $600 camera (body only) I'm floored.

Chip

Its a $1500 camera body, the $600 one (G1)doesn't do video.
If they have improved the video significantly I would pick the GH1 for its lens mount flexibility and electronic viewfinder over the Canons.
But I will not take any of them over a Scarlet.

Your incorrect, the '$1500' is the GH1 body AND KIT LENS (actually $1189.95 from buy.com), you can buy the GH1 (body only) out of Europe or Japan NO KIT LENS, BODY ONLY for $599.

Again, from what I'm seeing from a $600 camera (body only, NO KIT LENS) I'm floored.

It's going to make a great crash / stunt cam.

Trying to find this price. Can you share a link?

EDIT: Nevermind. I just realized it would probably come with a Japanese language menu :(

You'll have to do some searching, the European/Japan GH1's also come in 3 colors, Red, Gold and Black. I'm limited on time right now. Google translator is your friend.

It might be easier for some of you to buy from an importer off eBay like this guy who has GH1 bodies for $679.95, it's cheaper to buy them from discount electronic camera shops in Japan then put the US firmware on it so it's NTSC and english menus. The body only Retails for full list price of $599 in Japan, I have seen them cheaper at the discount stores but you have to view their sites with google translator.

Thanks! I guess this seals it.

Vladimir,

Any 3rd party importer like the one on eBay selling the GH1 bodies for $679.95 is making money, you can buy them cheaper in Japan if you want to mess with it. I'd be willing to bet bought in bulk they can be had for $400 ish each.

Group buy?

Wow! OK. I get paid in two weeks though. I could probably borrow from my GF if you go earlier than that. Just let me know!

"The original plan was to use the Canon 1D MKIV or 5D MKII as this would be a low light shoot. I worked with the VFX team and we were worried that the H.264 compression would bring up too many potential headaches given that some of the characters had to be comped in - and each character had to have the flames added to their heads with VFX. Therefore we decided to work with the Red Mysterium-X. I was really impressed with how well the new sensor handled a pretty incredible range of exposure / latitude - far in excess of what I’m used to working with on digital. I’ve since used the Mysterium-X on two separate videos and keep being surprised at how well it holds highlights and shadows at the same time.

Someday - I’d love to see how the Canons would do relative to this sensor - but until the Canons can offer RAW recoding (i.e. not H.264 compressed footage that they currently do) we’ll never really know… As I’ve said - each camera has it’s unique place in the market today - each has pros and cons and I love to work with both of them." OK, so I already feel like a traitor, because my Nikon F is what started it all for me. Sorry Nikon, but you're behind in the video arena. That said, my 5D2 arrived yesterday and I thought I'd pass on a couple of thoughts...

Remember the feeling you had when you opened your Red? Joy. Unbounded hope. Almost delirium. A real professional tool, maybe with an ergonomic quirk or two, but everything I've always wanted in a camera. Not so with the 5D2.

Everything is a kludge. One compromise followed quickly by two more. To make it work, I'm going to have to add so much stuff, I really won't be that far from a properly fitted Red and it will still be a far, far less capable camera.

I'm sure it will improve over time, probably quickly; I'll just buy new bodies as it does, and it will find a place in my business, but probably not in my heart.

I think that might be important.

The future for this form factor camera? I don't think it's so bright for motion pictures, but it will undoubtedly serve me well as a stills camera.

Good shooting and best regards,

Leo

One shot on M-X, ISO6400 (metered to F2.8 and lens set accordingly) shutter 1/48th. Other on 1D MK III, ISO6400 (H) shutter 1/45th (nearest they give you, erred on the side of longer) F2.8. Both at 50mm.

I think M-X utterly rocks in low light, and has fantastic DR to hold highlights and roll them off smooth.

Okay, I had to laugh as I was pixel peeping. Your 'Destination Docklands' box has some serious aliasing on it. However, in comparing with EVERYTHING around it, from what I can tell it is actually printed that way :) Good example of more detail right there.

Yes, that's the typeface! So now you've all seen a part of my massive VHS collection.

I'm astounded at the contraptions needed to make V-DSLR's usable for motion picture work.

But as you say, the 5D2 is an excellent still camera.

Thanks for the info on body only pricing. Any US outlets selling body only? I wouldn't mind picking one up at that price to be able to evaluate some of my 16mm lenses.
