My RED #8 received the full upgrades from RED in October...thanks RED! Very, very much appreciated...

My other RED cameras will also be upgraded shortly.

After a 30-year career in TV, film, video, and still photography, and using nearly every brand of equipment there is, I have to say that RED has far and away the highest level of customer service, customer input in the development process, most progressive company attitude, and loyalty to their customers that I have ever experienced. All of this is great - but then there is the true bottom line - the camera system is very capable of generating stunning images that can be used across a broad range of motion media industries and genres.

RED as a company has been a game-changer from the very beginning, and in my own sphere their products have radically changed both my business plan and production plans. Going back to the pre-RED motion media business for me would be like going back to hamburger when I've acquired a taste for choice steak..hamburger just wouldn't taste the same... and with Epic, Scarlet, DSMC, and RED Ray on the horizon, the feast has just begun!

Thanks to RED, IMO its a fantastic time to be working in the motion (and stills) media business. Those of you who are veterans of the pre-RED era (and have experienced using RED One) will probably agree with me. Those of you who are new to the industries impacted by RED, enjoy the ride knowing that you have been super fortunate to start your careers with such versatile, flexible, scalable, and capable equipment.

The entire RED Team has busted their rears over the past three years to make Jim Jannard’s vision a reality. They hardly ever sleep, they work together as a team, and they have overcome gigantic obstacles one after the other. I know all of RED Team personally and I have known Jim Jannard for decades. Collectively these guys are the epitome of a “If you can dream it, you can achieve it” mantra, and a “There are no problems – only solutions” paradigm.

If you want to know the secret to Jim’s business success, with Oakley and now RED, IMO it is centered around two key attributes: he has stellar creative vision in an ever-changing environment, and he is an excellent team builder. As he builds his team he lets them use their talents and experience to function as a cohesive group – macro managing rather than micro managing. Its not rocket science, but you’d have to have excellent creative foresight and be a great team builder to replicate it – and there are not very many of those people in existence.

Thanks again RED…

Hey Gibbs,

What did the upgrades entail?

J.

Hey Gibbs,

What did the upgrades entail?

J.

As I remember:

Installed iPins, new audio board, and upgraded CF reader/writer (16GB support).

Upgraded my RED 18-50 for iPin data usage

Tune up - performed camera diagnostics, replaced hex screw with torx screws, cleaned the OLPF (optical low pass filter)

Upgraded pin assemblies on my battery plates and chargers.

Installed Build 17 firmware

Examined my mini-XLR to XLR audio cables. Mine didn't need replacing.

--------------------------

I think thats about it - hope I didn't miss anything. All this was voluntarily offered and performed by RED at no charge to me - and you for your RED cameras. Pretty impressive I'd say! In my experience, these kind of free upgrades are unheard of in this industry. Add that to the long series of other free upgrades to the cameras (firmware, X body upgrades, etc.) and its very impressive to say the least. Very, very cool...

I just want to join the cheering crowd, RED has been one hell of a ride!

What a great camera, amazing images, amazing service and what a deal it has been!

Thanks again RED…

While I agree with all of your post, just want to affirm the statement above by saying that what this company has done is for me at least, life changing. I now believe that in time I can.

Not to mention that I HATE buyer's remorse... don't think it will ever happen to me while dealing with this company. Certainly no signs of it to date. Makin' things better for no charge and even PAYING FOR THE SHIPPING is very un-Godzilla-like.

I came to the conclusion early on that "RED don't rust (it's upgradable); therefore, in RED I trust."

Great post Gibby..Very well said!
You speak for many of us... I have a feeling the journey will continue to be full of pleasant surprises !

Well Gibby,

you forgot to mention that you almost lost possession of your RED #8 while in Vegas, and not do to Gambling:) it was very hard to let go of this peace of History once in my hands!!!:)

ciao

LOL - I knew I shouldn't have taken #8 to Vegas!!!!

I've been looking all over the place for the camera since returning to California - so now I know where it went!

I'll be back over there shortly...:gun:

Seriously - it was awesome working with you guys and all of the other RED User members who who stepped up to give of their time and talents for the Las Vegas production. Way, way, way cool...

P.S. - RED #8 is now tucked away in a safe somewhere in North America. I'm just using my other RED cameras and counting the days like everyone else until I can upgrade them to Epic.
