I got in my 8 Red-Drives today! I am very stoked!!!!! :sorcerer:

IT RECORDS 29.97 @ 4K 2:1!!!!!!!!!!!! I am so happy about this! Now my commercial work with Red may begin!

My innital recactions are all good. It boots like a CF card & rolls as fast as a CF card. It takes 50 seconds to reformat, not bad for 2+ hours of footage!

My finder sees 298 gigs available to use after format. So, I figure I can shoot 150 minutes-ish.

It powers up just with a short firewire 800 cable, 6". Each drive comes with a cable and power supply (with world plugs!) The case is solid and fits in cradle nicely.
:sorcerer:

Holy Shit ! 8 drives ? that is some serious record time, enjoy. When you say finder do you mean EVF ?
Aloha

Have you tried any run and gun bumping the drive here and there? It sounds like Red made sure they could take a bit of a beating and if something does happen the camera should let you know there were errors.

Thats the type of positive experienced based) endorsement we like to hear

World plugs? Is this some sort of multi-regional adaptor?

I'm clearly speculating here, but I'm guessing "finder" in this context refers to MacOS, not a readout on the EVF.

BTW, 8 drives is pretty sweet.

"Finder" is the Mac OS finder

Yeah, mutiple plug ends to attach to the power supply

I will try bumping it around in a minute

I got 8 drives because I figure I can shoot 2 maybe 3 a day. Then production can have them for 2 days (for free) to download in the calm and serinity of the edit bay.

I was lucky that my drives showed up only a day after I got my camera so I haven't had to contend with shooting everything to CF cards. In fact I've only used some of the CF cards just to see how the old swappo process works.

A group of seasoned EFP pros showed up to see 214 this evening. I was so happy to have the drives here. It meant doing all kinds of shooting without needing to swap out any media. Needless to say I had to warn them to keep their chins clear of the door sill on the way out as one of them almost broke their jaw.:)

I have to reiterate that 4k @ 30p is SUPER SWEET!!!

The drives can handle quite a bit of bumping! I dropped the drive 1 inch several times onto solid granite - no dropped frames. I slapped it pretty good - no drop.

I was able to produce dropped frames by slapping very hard and whacking it with a wood hammer handle. It dose not like hard quick shaking. heavy vibrations like car rigs on rough road will be a problem. The drive can be separated from the camera and perhaps wrapped in foam or bubble wrap to absorb vibration.

I think it would be fine hand held or steadicam in a hardcore music video shoot. It seems to me it can handle an impact well. To the point you will be worried about the rest of the camera, lens....

I have to reiterate again that 4k @ 30p is SUPER SWEET!!!

Thanks Rich! That actually makes me feel really good about the drives. For the tough situations, CF will be the way to go but for most things it seems the Red drive is good to go.

Great News! Could one of you lovely people please record anything in a normally heated room for 1 hour continuously and record the sound of the camera from a cam-mounted shotgun, a lav on a subject 7-8 feet away, and any other mic situations you can muster :-)

THANKYOU THANKYOU!!

Richcam and Craig

I would really appreciate it if one of you would be willing to lock off the camera on a shot with the red drive and hit record in an average temp room and see how long it records for before camera fans kick in loud enough to cause audio issues.

Thanks

EDIT: I see fergus and I were on the same page here (ha)

Rich,

How do you feel about 4k @ 30p? :)

Actually, that's the mode I'm interested in, so I'm glad it's looking good. Does 16x9 work at 30p, too?

Hey there ! Thanks for testing the drive as harshly as you did. (Wooden hammer test ? Cooool !) I was pretty worried about how the drive would react what performance it could provide in handheld.

Did you test for a long series of moderate bumps. Something like a cameraman running/jogging for a minute or two.

Any info regarding the amount noise of drive makes would be very appreciated.

Please keep the info coming. Too much is never enough !

P.S. As for reinstalling QT 7.3, you use pacifist to rip the individual packages from the 7.3 installer and manually and individually reinstall them by replacing the QT 7.4 files. The simplest way to find the files to replace is to use 'Spotlight'. (Uhhh... that's in Mac OS. If anyone is using windows and has the problem I'd be interested in knowing how to get around it.)

Bumps are not a problem, vibration is. Running jogging will be fine.

PS HELP!!! How do I reinstall QT 7.3? http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthr...?t=7766&page=3

See my post above. (It is to see how long the camera can record before camera fan noise cause sound issues).

Ahhh, I see. I will try to test it for you tomorrow night. (I am shooting this week, need to sleep)
