Ok, I was playing around shooting 4k 2.1 and 2k 2.1, off speed and 1 frame stuff. I went to play back in the camera and it crashed the camera. I then hooked up the drive to a laptop and it would not mount on desktop, tried disc utility and Disc Warrior. I am going to try on a windows machine later to see if it comes up. Thankfully this was not a paid gig. The question I am posing, is it wrong to shoot multiple formats and speed changes on the same drive? It felt kinda wrong but it was working at first.

We have done plenty of that without issue.

Drive won't mount?

Try the USB connection on the drive (and obviously make sure the drive is connected to the AC power adapter).

As long as you are using one project frame rate, you should not have problems. You can't mix frame rates on the same drive. But you can use varispeed, which will be played out at project frame rate.

Steve,
in the feld replay to one side, can one mix frame rates on a drive and still edit?

Mike Brennan

Mike,

Not sure I'm understanding the question correctly.

If you mean can you bring in files with various frame rates into post to edit, then the answer is yes. Once the files are off the red media and onto editing drives, this limitation no longer applies. RED's formatting scheme wants to see a project with one frame rate. In FCP for example, if you drop clips with various frame rates into the timeline, it will conform based on the sequence master frame rate.

if the drive wont mount on your computer after it sees it once, try a reboot, i do that every once in awhile.

Ok nothing is working it's not coming up, tried everything suggested. Now I am scared of shooting with these drives.

We are now in the 3 week of shooting a nation TV-series (ER style) We have Two REDs booting in the morning and keept running the hole day by "SWAP-Packs". We're shooting all to RAIDs and they're all alive and well:love: You just had bad luck with your drive - remember, the RED is more like a computer, every one will have issues with software/hard ware at some time. But believe me, it's worth it - the picture quality is just plain out of this world! We have hardly had any problems on set, and have a crazy output of 16 pages of script/day - the RED has been working for us very very very reliable!

I just backed up a bunch of shots from a heli shoot onto a firewire drive which promptly died. Working on data recovery now. Drives can drive you to drinking. Preferably after a sick surf session.

I am having similar problems. I shot two interviews yesterday in 4k 2:1 and previewed the clips in camera, they show up with no problem, video and audio are great. When I try pulling them into FCP (6.0.2) using the Log and Transfer function, my other clips on the drive pull in fine, but when I scroll down the list to my new clips, FCP crashes, stating "The application Final Cut Pro quit unexpectedly. The problem may have been caused by the REDCODE.QT plug-in." I receive the same error when I try to play the quicktime files on the drive. Same error when I copy the data from the Red drive to another hard drive. RedAlert crashes with the same error.

My footage looks like the one in this link (with the garble at the bottom) http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?t=13122&highlight=crash. My settings say 2:1, although they look like 16:9.

When I pull the files into RedCine, they play, but there's no audio. Can anyone assist? Thanks much.

Hi Brian,
how many batteries do you need for a whole shooting day ?

Nils.

Hi Nils

We use about 6-7 non RED 190W batteries to keep the RED going with EFV and RAID for 10h straight. However, please note, that we swap batteries when the batterie gauge shows one point left - so I guess if we would let the batteries run out, we would only need 5-6 for a full 10h shoot non-stop.

you need to be on FCP 6.0.3

My apologies, I was going by memory. I am in FCP 6.0.3. Thanks.

Which batts are you using Brian and how do you like them?

Re: drives not mounting.

Seems to be a finickky firmware thing in the drive. Before despairing, try the other ports (firewire 800, firewire 400, USB). You might even try using a cable-adapter to get the firewire 800 port to read on a firewire 400 computer.

I've had to do some of that juggling to get my Red Drive to mount on my computer.

I agree with you, Red service is taking good care of me. I just don't care to have that particular drive back again. It has not soured me from Red in the least bit! I have had bad film stock before and have had my share of tapes eaten as well! At least here there is still a chance of getting the footage back. I have read alot of bellyaching here and mostly from The Cow (Boy some of those people are bitter!) about Red service, but I must say I have had nothing but the best experience from them very professional. And now Jarred is on this case!

As far as Batts. go you should go with the Red batts. had them working on a 12hr day and would only use 4 of them powering a microforce, red lcd and a evf!

Same Here

KLang,

I have the same problem. One of my drives is rock solid. The other has the same problems as yours. I sent it back to RED and i'm pretty sure they sent me back the same drive on accident. I'm in the process of getting it back to them now. RED has been nothing but great as far as service and help with me.
