  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED Dragon?

yeah i was massively confused when redmodz4k posted it in their chat stream and people repeated it here, came back and then it was said it was confirmed to be an upgrade not a short film...
any how, it's a massive move for RED considering they were talking about brains before and now the brain movement feels obsolete with the ability to gut the innards to change the sensor...

If EPIC-X ships out by September latest and Dragon is 2012...it's really not long between to get a monstro sensor...but I can only imagine the queue for the Dragon!

Red Dragon is Red management's way of telling you that your Epic is already obsolete. That's the surprise.

In this day and age, what isnt obsolete the day it ships? Are you aware of any other camera manufacture that has ever offered an upgrade to their sensor? What Red is doing is unprecedented.

Is Dragon 5K or 6K? I'm hoping it is the same size as the current X sensor. I would sure hate to make any harder to focus with a FF sensor. And the ability to move up to Monstro in the X body is just terrific, terrific news!

I don't understand Dragon. Red first said they would allow for sensor swap outs when R1 was introduced. Then they gave us MX. Then the brain concept. Now back to sensor swap. Will Dragon be available for R1? Are we still going to get a full frame chip down the line?

Since you guys are in Vegas what are the odds that the EVF's/SSD's fill backorder before Dragon/Monstro rolls out?

I don't think they're even thinking of releasing specs until later this year (if that) and not starting the upgrades until 2012 at this point.

To say that this makes EPIC obsolete is ridiculous. Just because you're going to be able to upgrade in a year or two doesn't change the fact that EPIC beats any other camera available at the moment...

Epic with MX offers 16bit, 120 fps at 5K in a matchbox.

If that qualifies as obsolete in 2014 I'll be surprised.

Just sayin'

2012 my friend,we are all assuming that red will definitely delay even this time due their prior record with epic but that may not be the case this time, this company definitely looks like one that learns from its mistakes..........

Fully agree that Red needs to stop giving SSD's and EVF's to Epic-M buyers until all the Red One owners get their orders first.

Well, it's very late here, and I just feel jealous over people running with Epic's, SSD's, and Bomb EVF's. That's all..

Obviously we don't have much info (if any) about Dragon but the option to eventually swap out the sensor is really good news. Because as good as MX is today, you know you'll want the better sensor when it becomes available!
Red know how to look after its users.

Does the new red quick release system support 15mm LW rods

Does the new red quick release system support 15mm LW rods

The title says it all. It looks like it is sufficiently modular to allow for a 15mm LW adapter to be put on the front.

are you sure about not having to buy new brain?

Epic to Monstro upgrade???? As in trade in??? or... is there enough room in an Epic? ( :

If true: yikes

I asked Graeme. He was very clear. Positively NO specs yet. EPIC -> Monstro will work exactly the same as RED ONE -> MX. So no brain swap, just a new slice of silicon in your EPIC brain. New silicon with some combination of better DR, higher base ISO, more resolution, whatever - they ain't saying a thing yet other than that the program will exist.

'Monstro' is the name of the sensor family; the next spin of the silicon. It's the technology that will be used for the FF35 & larger sensors if & when, but 'Monstro' does NOT equal 'FF35'. At some point I'm *guessing* there will be 2/3" Monstro sensors, and that EPIC-X will be Monstro as standard, just as RED ONE is MX as standard as it ships today.

I gather what Blair meant is that the Epic that's out NOW will still be relevant in 2014 without any mods/upgrades.

I'm just so hoping that the Dragon for Epic-X is NOT FF35. I most definitely do not want to have to have a FF35-sized sensor to get that added image quality. I'll be fine with 5K. Really fine, actually.

Yeah, when some lenses are vignetting at 5K on EPIC already, the thought of having to use a bigger sensor to get the quality is not good.

But then again, the improvement should be mostly in dynamic range, sensitivity, etc. so if it were the same pixel density and also be full frame, it may be that you could get dramatically increased quality at 5K and then the option to go higher res. With the EPIC being able to shoot 96 fps at the full sensor size I my maths say it should be able to do at least 48fps at 6K which would let you do 24 fps HDR-X.

So you could have the best of both worlds. But we'll have to wait and see whether it is actually higher res (like 6K or something) and whether it's full frame.
