  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED Dragon vs. 65mm film...

this thread makes allot of sense now

been hearing buzz about the Panavision Camera after several months of silence..... it's finally in its last stages of engineering

-IMAX Sensor with Global Shutter

-Proprietary Lens and New IMAX PV Mount

-Zooms will have 3 built in motors sliming down the front end of a rig

-Built in ND Filters

-WireLess Remote Focus Receiver Built In

-Half the size of an Alexa

-July release

no news on resolution, codec, wireless picture, or frame rates

wont be able to own this bad boy lol

why would Red stop making lenses when there's a new market waiting to be exploited Medium Format Mount and Lenses for video? If the time comes Duclos maybe converting allot of still lenses hehe.

ahh the camera wars its always fun to smell whats cooking in the kitchen

i think Dragon will seal the deal when it comes to S35 capture

Cool. That's an imax movie but if you look closely, there is a Red monitor attached meaning...

Rob McD...your post about the need for good 4k2k demos is spot on. I have also noticed how poorly most 4k2k footage I have seen actually shows the capabilities of these cameras. Hopefully things can only get better!

Thanks, Ian. Better projectors showing better footage, and serving to evaluate footage quality from better cameras has to be good for the industry as well as the viewing experience.

We did for an IMAX movie now in theaters "Flight of the Butterflies". But we only used this camera for 10 days. Later, the production switched to EPIC on ATOM. The format is very unfriendly and data hungry. The camera is so rare that Abel sent a really expensive camera tech guru... Production nightmare, heavy data rates, horrible transcoding times, expensive technicians and finally, it is a camera hard to own.

I have to mention that most of that film is shot on Epic and some aerials on 65mm film. The Phantom 65 has a minority, and for all the inconvenience the image quality is not worth it. It is actually not as as beefy as the Epic footage, where the R3D contains more color information.

Thats what I thought. I guess it'S like phantom flex but even bigger sensor. But the high framrate together with bigsensor is a nice combo even if some colordepth is lost. But for shooting macro highspeed butterflies it not the camera that makes things easier thats for sure.

bigger than the current mx sensor but smaller than full frame 35mm

Gotcha, thanks! Well, I am definitely hoping for a large sensor option in the future. Love larg(er) format photography, and I love movies that were shot 65 or 70mm.

Cid, where did you hear this?

Love the look of larger frame formats. Stoked to see what Dragon has to offer.

yo mike thats the word on the streets out here in hollywood via AC and prep techs.

they've been talking about a new line of cameras since i moved out here beginning of the year, originally I heard they had 3 cameras, a 2/3-S35-IMAX but now I'm hearing they're putting all their money on IMAX.

Just got back from Disneyland and happened to watch Captain EO which was IMAX 3D back in 1986 LOL

It was an amazing experience the Audience lost it screaming "we love you mike" cheering and singing along totally unreal, IMAX & 3D captured that moment forever. Last time I saw that film was at least 16 years ago and it still holds up.

IMAX 3D is the future until we can get to hologram capture. The technology has been there we just needed DKR & Avatar to prove it amongst the audiences and studios, the lower costs of digital cameras has also contributed to the refinement of the 3D medium. 3D and Digital are made for each other.

really looking forward to the future of storytelling should be fun

Red is helping us get there I'm finally gonna go check out the Hobbit tmrw looking forward to HFR.

Cid's images are showing 5 perf, 65mm cameras, and not 15 perf, horizontal Imax cameras.
The top camera is a Mitchell FC (Fox camera, although assistants who have to schlep it called it by other names.)
In the lower image, it is indeed a Super Panavision 65mm camera.

If you look (not so) closely... the second guy who turns into a human is a different guy within about 2 shots.

I am really confused. Article mentions:
- Global shutter. I believe that it will give much more noise and a lot less DR than rolling shutter but artile than says that IMAX camera will have
- 120 db of DR and that 88db is 13 stops. I really am not sure where did they get these numbers and what do they mean (explanation, anybody?) but Wiki doesn't help and only make things worse because numbers totally don't match http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dynamic_range
- 12 bit raw at 2K. Correct me if I am wrong but is there a point of wide dynamic range if sensor records at just 12 bit raw?
-So is it 2K or 4K? Article says that sensor is 2K but "It records to a SSD on board in DNxHD, ProRes and likely raw though details are still shrouded in secrecy – it will likely be 4k". Wait, what?
