  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Red Dragon UHD 4K Workshop South Korea - w/ many images and breakdown

Once again you've taken time out of your busy schedule to show us a very thorough account of your experiences as a reduser. It's always a treat to read your posts, Phil. Thank you (AGAIN) for letting me live vicariously through you. Well done.

As always Phil you give so much to this forum. Thank you and I am happy you had a great experience.....

Cheers,

Peter

Thanks guys. Really appreciate it. It's a lot of work putting stuff like this together and executing at a high level. It's real rewarding and educational for me as well.

Hahahaha Amazing! You can get a Kid Trax of my car?!

Isn't Volvo's slogan "For Life"? I guess they mean that!

Reduser has been kind of slow without you lately.

Apologies for that. I know I've been a ghost lately. I've been checking in here and there but I have to sometimes step into the oven and make some dough :)

Thank you Peter. It was tremendous. Thanks for all of the advice as well.

I can see you going on a world tour with this ... ;-)

Funny you mention that. I do strongly feel there will be a few more of these. More on that soon :)

Phil, as an ambassador of both RED and the USA, you have literally made the world a better place.

Thank you Jacques. Don't know about the whole world, but hopefully the little slice we entertainment folks occupy has been brightened up a bit.

That is one hell of a gif!

I hope I run into you at NAB, I'm keen to me some fellow Redusers in the flesh :-)

I'll certainly be there. First stop and likely where I spend a good chunk of my time is the Red booth. I'll be sniffing around for info on other new things while I'm there. This will be known likely as the year where UHD becomes insanely competitive. I'm also hoping to see some technological advancements come to some production gear. Can't wait to see what everybody has in store. I have a general idea of what Red's up to, but I'm damn sure (just like last year) there will be a good handful of surprises.

Very good post, Phil.
You're doing such a great job, Jim and Jarred might just hire you to be in the RED team.

Heh. We'll see. There's been a bit of talk about it in the past. I'm more or less curious exactly what sort of role I can actually fill at RDC. Don't know what my job title would end up being. That's how the whole "Digital Imaging Specialist" came to be years ago because studios didn't know what to call me anymore. Heh. Maybe Digital Cinema Specialist. Who knows?

I should add one thing to this post for sure:

Those are some of the crew from Red Korea. I've been tracking and shooting Red for a bit now, but it's pretty stellar how far Red as a camera and cinema accessory manufacturer has come. Remember around 7 years ago people still were saying this company was "vaporware". Far from it nowadays. All sorts of productions all over the world being shot with Red cameras. Some even with the original Red One, which is crazy in terms of lasting power.

We're going to see just how important 6K is this year at NAB and how dead on Dragon actually is. UHD 4K is about to hit consumers by storm in a big way and we're going to see a fairly speedy need for more 4K content. We've only been smelling the smoke from it's chimney in the distance up until this point.

Much of what this workshop was about was how to adapt to this new world. Particularly in a market that is ruled by what many would consider ENG cameras with smaller sensors. You guys all know me and know I'm an advocate of high resolution capture and display, same could be said about my attraction to S35 and larger capture formats. From a picky shooter's perspective I have made the decision some time ago to not work below 4K. I would almost say at this point you'd be crazy not to shoot in 4K considering what's coming and how content will be sold, but hey we're all crazy in our own ways.

4K and UHD sells themselves in reality. Everybody who sees it likes it. Now it's time to button up new delivery methods and standards. Some have been formed, some are still floating around in that soupy abyss. All I know is that 2014 and soon enough 2015 will be massive years for UHD.

Here's a couple other grabs from that great day at the park in South Korea. Wish I had more time to shoot that area and the people. A couple other random grabs from around town too. As usual with my slightly aggressive grading :)

It is very nice to meet you.

For those curious, nearly everything I shot "around town" was with the Canon EF Mount on Dragon using 6K 2:1 with a Voigtlander 40mm f/2 Ultron SL II prime lens. Though that landscape at dawn shot was 24mm. I kept it compact so it was relatively easy to got out and shoot. That lens breathes a bit, but it's nice and small. Great for street shooting like this.

Great post. You should consider developing a Dragon workshop. Write a book - I would totally buy it.

It was a pleasure to read your whole report. Very interesting. More please ;o)

AWESOME Phil! Thanks!

A great comprehensive and very concise summary of Phil's adventures in Seoul.

I must say, Phil is one of the smartest and most knowledgeable person I've encountered. His understanding and technical expertise of RED Digital Cameras is second to none.
Thank you, Phil, for doing such a fantastic job of educating the filmmakers of Korea on capturing and working with Dragon footage. It was an amazing three days and I was honored to have been by your side throughout.
And, Phil is a great guy to boot!!!

See you at NAB, Phil. And thanks for the write-up!

More will be coming soon for sure.

It's a great pity, Phil.
Had assignment last week so I missed this!

No worries. I have a feeling there will be more of these events. This was the first time I've ever done workshop with a translator and I know now a bit more about the pace of how things can go. The next one will be even better trust me.

I'm actually working on my Dragon Reference Guide for you guys at the end of the week. Heh. I should sell it, but I didn't charge for the last one I made.

Could always put a donate option somewhere; either to yourself or a charity/fund of your choosing

Hey Phil, did you have any request/attempt to master the footage for UHD@59.94p?

That's the request I am currently getting for sample footage to be sent through - and was wondering what the best workflow of getting 23.976p shot footage to that format would be and which tools are best suited? It seems like a basic pull-down sort of thing is in order, but my only real experience with that has been in the progressive to interlaced world - workflow recommendations for going from 23.976p to 59.94p seem a bit thin on the ground, but seeing as 59.94p seems to be the frame rate UHD is settling on as the broadcast target, that's the deliverable format we are being asked to prepare for.

Yes. We did discuss future UHD broadcast delivery standards at frame rates of 23.98 through 59.94. Ideally you capture at the higher frame rate, however, you will indeed need to conform to 59.94 when coming from slower sources. You can do this through Adobe After Effects CC or Resolve. Personally I would use some sort of "optical flow" motion compensation for the conversion if it is indeed necessary.

In the future interlaced doesn't exist. Nobody wants that anymore as far as I know.

Optical Flow - really - jesus, on our budget with our hardware that would be a nightmare. Heck, for our feature our 800 gig master (82 minutes, Prores 4444) is about to balloon to closer to 1.6TB.

I'm just looking at doing a pulldown - wish that they could have just settled on 120hz refresh minimum on all 4K screens and thus forced 5:5 progressive pulldown on everyone - at least then the maths works out easy for all 24p originated stuff, even if the storage space would end up unnecessarily doubled again (or they had a workflow that got decent flagging to work so I didn't have to render out redundant frames.)

Well I would do some tests with maybe 2-5 minutes of your piece and see how you like it converted. In this particular case you are in a compromised position because you need to convert it to 60P and it wasn't captured that way. It doesn't have to be via optical flow, you can do a traditional pull down.

I have delivered 23.98 for 4K broadcast use out here in LALA land. I don't think 60p is how "everything" will be done.
