  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED DRAGON / SOUTH AFRICA / INIDA / MAHINDRA SCORPIO

This looks great, Mark! I would have thought the plane was real too.

What frame rate was the horse shot?

Fantastic work, Mark! Beautifully shot and executed! You never cease to amaze in terms of the projects you take on and the final outcome.

...

I'm a bit curious about your workflow, do you edit and grade yourself? (It's just that you mentioned about doing the Water Bomber too)

....

I'm quite curious as well and would love to learn more about your workflow. You definitely had me fooled with the plane as I didn't notice that it's all CG.

Great work Mark.......if you don't mind please tell us your workflow

Thanks
Sunil Prem

Once again amazing work Mark

Thanks once again for the stunning work Mr Toia

I travel the world so much, I have had to invent a quick LAPTOP workflow that works for me when I'm not near a big machine. Which of late seems to be all the time.

For this project for instance, I transcoded all my files to REDLOGFILM at half debayer (on my laptop) which I carefully colour balance so they are perfect before I export to 2k / 422(HQ) Prores , 4444 is over kill and full debayer is a waste of time if your only doing a 2k project. And yes most of my work goes to cinema as well.

I edit in FCPX... (why because its way faster and more powerful than Premier and Avid) I'm from Avid Man / Pushed FCP7 and Premier for many years as well... I know them all back to front. FCPX is the future. (until someone comes out and knocks them off)

I do my grading in FCPX or RESOLVE depending on the complexity of the shot. This project was graded 95% in FCPX, and an two shots I went to resolve.
I grade the R3D's only if Im not getting the results I want from the PRORES file... Or if I want to change colour temps, or to suck out more bottom or top end information.
But not very often do I need to do this, Since Dragon the 16stop latitude really makes it easy, having all you need when grading... Its pretty amazing these days.

I composite in AE or NUKE depending on the complexity of the shot. AE is hands down way way faster than NUKE, but NUKE handles my multi layered 3d EXR workflow a lot better.
Some times I slip into Smoke for a better Key every now and then... but less and less as time goes on. Its just to slow to render. GPU rendering on AE is a life saver.
FLAME / SMOKE has the best color warper going, but its clunky slow rendering nature has pushed me away.

I use Cinema 4D for 3D... I confess i'm pretty average at it, due to not being on it all the time. Cinema 4D is not as good as MAYA over all... but its way way faster and easier to use.
In this case I did not create the plane for this project, I wanted to, but was to busy, I had a friend of mine knock it out for me as I was stuck in a plane for two days and shooting in NY... Would have.. but impossible. Plus he would have done a better job. I did however composite all the shots in AE over a 10 hour period (yes on my laptop) I was in a rush. But it seem to come out ok.

Why do I do it all.... Because Im a control freak. :) But really.... I still treat this all as a Hobby. My wife thinks I should retire, But Im having to much fun.

This looks great, Mark! I would have thought the plane was real too.

What frame rate was the horse shot?

100 fps

SSD's are definitely the best for travelers and different environments. The Aquarius Habitat on the Cousteau project was under three atmospheres of pressure, spinning drives would destroy themselves in a very short time. Although I don't see the manufacturers saying anything about this, editing on your laptop in an aircraft cabin at 8000 ft can be hard on spinning drives as well, cooling issues I've heard.

In any event, thanks for the insight into your workflow Mark, very generous of you.

My typical response again: 'Very Nice!'

How better to describe your amazing work?

Can't wait to see next episode.

Thank you very much Mark.I am a big fan of you and your work.....................

Thanks

Hey Mark

You truly are a renaissance man to be able to do all of this yourself !

Thanks for the heads up on the workflow, when you mention the transcoding I'm assuming this is with Redcine X, is that correct ?

Lastly if you're ever in London and you've got the time then Dinner/Lunch/breakfast will be on me. It's always nice to chat with a fellow Aussie (I grew up in Perth, but fell in love with Europe in my early twenties)

Thanks again for the incredibly generous spirit Mark.

Warmest wishes

Adrian

Thank you Mark for taking the time to let us into how you achieve these wonders. You always make it sound so easy. I guess, for you, it is : )
A composer friend of mine was asking about the music. Can you tell us a bit about the soundtrack?

Mark,
I saw it in TV the other day. Good to know that you have shot this commercial. Well done!
Cheers,
Sabyasachi
PS: There is a typo in the subject line. My country is spelt wrong. :(

Oh shit ! It is too. Sorry about that. That's what happens when you try to post in a car on a iPhone ! And not check. Sorry about that.
Bummer. I can't seem to fix it? .. oh well. What's done is done
