  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED DRAGON SENSOR, your expectations???

Here's a nice chart to compare sensor sizes...

Chart.jpg

My expectations are:

1. It'll be awesome

2. We'll get more details when it's ready to ship

[EDIT] 3. a few days before 2. above, we'll hear 'heh heh heh' quite a lot, then Jim will post an image without comment which makes everyone wonder 'how the fsck did he do that?!'

:-)

the charts is great help !!!! correct me please!!! i thought the RED ONE MX...had the same sensor as EPIC????
It does, and the chart above indicates this where it shows the Mysterium-X chip as being in the Epic.

Yes. The EPIC, however, has different electronics purpose built to use the Mysterium-X sensor, whereas the RED ONE was retrofitted with the Mysterium-X sensor.

This explains why the RED M-X is limited to 4.5K instead of 5K, and why footage from EPIC appears to be improved over the same footage shot on an RED ONE M-X.

I remember in the very very early announcement of Epic. Jim did posted a picture where there was Epic FF35 plan, that certainly caught my attention and think "I want to get that one". But as things change, as Jim always mentioned, Epic FF35 is no longer in the list. I think that's where people start to speculate about FF35 sensor being in the monstro or dragon.

My 2 cents

Guys, lets just get a few things straight first, Monstro is the name of the new sensor family from red ,Monstro is not Mysterium Monstro, its not in the Mysterium family, And the name of the first Monstro sensor is DRAGON, Its "MONSTRO DRAGON", Like "MYSTERIUM-X" thats it There is no difference between monstro and dragon its easy and simple, Monstro is the new sensor family and it will have a few sensors in this family, first being Monstro Dragon then Monstro something and monstro something.

As far as what the Monstro Dragon sensor will be like, i think it will have more resolution, more dynamic range, latitude and sensitivity and much better color reproduction and more color depth,i think monstro dragon will be the first sensor that will beat film,i.e it will be technically more superior than film. Red epic has full 13.5 stops of dynamic range and monstro will at least have 2 more stops if not more,Around 15.5 stops of dynamic range,1 stop more than kodak's 14.5 stops..........

I'm hoping for some more dynamic range and better colour reproduction.

Also less noise on the higher ISO's, but I don't want it to be more sensitive. 800ISO is a sweet spot IMO. Anymore and you're having to put too much ND in front of the lenses to get the stop down

Quite likely it will have some technology that allows truly variable ISO without penalty.

They could make the sensor with the same image circle, but different aspect ratio than 135 film.
I'd expect more resolution and higher latitude on both ends (less clipping, less noise)

I agree 24x36 for cinematographers is wasted real estate.

Keep in mind Epic is a DSMC camera (Digital Stills and Motion). The stills mode isn't enabled in the firmware yet so it's easy to forget, but the stills/motion rocker is right there on the side handle.

I'm not saying Dragon will be FF35 but if it was it would make sense if it was 24x36 for the still shooters.

I think it is safe to say that it could have the same incremental in crease from M to MX witch was 1.5 stops in the noise floor.
I don't think the native sensitivity will increase, and will still be a 320 iso sensor.

So we will see a sensor being marketed as a 15 stops sensor +20 stops in HDRx.
FF35 is a possibility with a 6k resolution, I think the possibility is high because there is a Rumor going around that arri will release a 5k Alexa in amsterdam IBC 2011 so a 6K will make them a leader in the world of High Res again.
And I think if they will go ahead with the FF35 design, they will for sure release some new line of lenses to go with the Full Frame sensor, most probably electronic lenses with focus motors built in.

That's just my two cents

I heard that it will have 30 stops of DR and clean up to ISO 102,800.

And there will be a 2k scaled mode again.

And it comes with a unicorn.

I wouldn't bet on FF35. The 5D world wants it, some redusers want it, most any cinematographer doesn't want it. All our lenses are S35, 5K already results in soft (even vignetted!) corners.

Most ACs and DPs I've worked for dislike the fact that the Red squeezes so many pixels out of its sensor, while Alexa, F65 etc use more pixels to generate a smaller final result with more accurate/stable color reproduction. If Red announced an improved bayer pattern, more intelligent photo sites, etc, that would make total sense to every professional Red-basher.

I'd bet on FF35. The Epic and Scarlet are both DSMC, and I think the S part is what the guys at Red are hungry to target at the moment. The Epic has won (or has inflicted a fatal blow in) the fight for digital motion, but there's a bigger challenge in converting Canon/Nikon guys to shooting in this way.

Honestly I'm hoping for more pleasing highlight handling and a stop more DN.

With that in mind I wanted to post this question... (cause I don't know where else to post it in this community)

http://vimeo.com/10519628

At 0:19 in this old video he says the Alexa is taking two frames for highlight protection and combining them in camera to create each single frame--- similar to HDRx... can anyone confirm if that is technically accurate or just bunk?
