a few more from our 8K VistaVision Sessions...

on the use of the Canon 11-24 (love the lens!) added a set of the 'WonderPana' (from FotoDiox Pro) ND, Grad ND and Polarizer filters made for the lens - great but these are HUGE (like working with dinner plates... the filters are 186mm and the Grad-ND is 8x10 inches!) - but with the VistaVision Sensor's size there is a bit of vignetting at the 11~13mm range - but over all working great - next up for testing is the KipperTie - OLPF ND's (should be testing those next week)

so here's a few frames with using a combo of the WonderPana filters on the Canon11-24 - Colorado Landscapes above 10,000' up to 14K - shot yesterday morning..

and then got snow showers.... Sigma 150-600mm...

also started on the Mtn. Goat series... a few more trips up the mountain for this...

over this last week - been adding more to the Butterfly, Raptors and Reptiles in 8K VistaVision series too...

while driving the other day - started thinking about 8K and realized that what we have available today in a 3.5lb camera body is a lot more than just 4-REDOne's crammed into a small box - pretty amazing!

a continuation of the 8K VistaVision sessions that I've been working on - Raptors in studio setup - LED Soft Panels and reflectors... (Eagles, Owls, Hawks, etc...)

@Clark I don't know if this is a stupid question. With the birds and snakes and other "Critters" they seem to have almost natural moiré patterns or even nested moiré patterns at different scales that are quite fractal like. RED is known for being very grown up about their use of various OLP-Filters. I haven't shot* / photographed birds and snakes etc. Do those types of subjects normally play havoc with other sensors that don't normally utilize OLPFs? I.e. do feathers and snake skin normally cause chronic inference/ moiré patterns (on or with other digital sensors)?

These VV shots look great, also brings it home that the aspect ratio does not seem as long as what one would suppose... (if I have that right/asleep at the wheel?). [For other type of non-cinematic work /photography and VFX and even s-3d type applications having a few more k in the vertical direction is really helpful. (I love long aspect ratio's for "Art"/cinematic type composition but sometimes for more general and technical imaging and VFX not having such a long skinny format is very useful, more practical).

thanks guys... well as with all subjects with incredible detail (feathers, hair, scales, etc) the resolution at acquisition really helps maintain that detail, even when scaling down (i.e. like these frame grabs from the 8K original to the 720x405 web jpegs) Another area where the resolution matters is when shooting big wide shots and landscapes which also have amazing levels of detail but also great depth and that comes thru with 8K original acquisition.

The 8K VistaVision (Dragon) Sessions - a couple weeks back Yellowstone and Teton Nat'l Parks... spent a couple of days getting up pre-dawn to explore the parks... while at the Jackson Hole Wildlife Film Festival with the RED team (Michael Keegan, Sean Ruggeri, Colin Glenn and Ivan Agerton) along with all the wonderful wildlife and natural history shooters and producers!

Thanks Clark every one of these is a treasure. So nice to see that all the formats hold up. It seems to me but maybe just the web compression that the 2k fire shot has a little more noise than the 2kwide. Just an observation. And Im looking at it on a laptop so take it with a grain of salt.

heya Russ,

thanks - all the clips from the MonstroVV to the REDOne.. were graded thru REDCineX (the current release build - using the IPP2 Legacy tool set) - great to have a workflow that seamlessly works on all the camera models, firmware changes and resolutions!

on the Monstro 2K and 2K-Wide - fire/flame clips -> couple of things... 1) I did not on that session black shade for the increased frame rate and shutter and 2) it was REALLY HOT being too close to the flames. So figure that those contributed to the extra noise on top of the cropped 2K from 8K sensor in pixel size... so will be reshooting with a slightly longer lens and black shade for the temps and frame/shutter speeds - see how that cleans up the noise from the 1st test.

...the next set of Monstro-VistaVision additions to the MammothHD Library - I've been working this last couple of weeks in-studio - tabletop/macros in the simple setup series... throwing various lighting and conditions to Monstro-VistaVision... mostly shot with Canon 100mm Macro but a few on the Sigma 24-70mm Art Series

match, embers, smoke - single soft box at a very low setting - ISO on these was 1600 at f4.5 with extension tubes and over cranked to 60fps
