  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Red Charger broken, any alternatives ?

Ouch, really ? I just placed an order for 3 of them, and was about to pay...
It's this one, right ?

I just sent an email to GMP asking them about it.
But what about those who said they did work ? Which model were they using then ?

let us know what they say
but
they DO have the batts that are compatible with our R1s though, they say:

I have a GMP charger and it doesn't work with Red bricks. Works fine with their own Red compatible batteries though, which are quite good themselves.

Thank you Steven-Marc.
So I guess that's bad news...

Would anyone have a recommandation as to what charger to buy to replace the Red charger to charge Red Bricks ?
The Red charger is quite expensive and seems to be pretty fragile. My 2 chargers are now dead, and I don't seem to be the only one having issues with them...

Did anyone try the Dynacore charger mentionned in an earlier post ?

yep thats what they told me too.....damn, and they wont take returns :(

So I just got a short answer from GMP :
"Please always use charger and battery of the same brand. This
guarantees long battery lifespan. Consider GMP batteries for Red
Camera and GMP charger."
Doesn't help much, but seems to confirm what has been said before...

I think the problem with the GMP charger is that it's some rebranded chinese equipment which probably differs depending on when you order. Mine looks slightly different than the one pictured even though it's the same reference and it does not work with Red bricks.
Red's own charger is a bit unreliable but it is quite fast, even though it is sequential.
I've heard good things about PAG in the UK but haven't used them first hand. I'm sure someone could chime in about their compatibility with Red bricks.

My GMP 4-way charger will charge both my RED bricks and my 190Wh GMP batteries (which I have become very found of) But the Red 2-way charger will not recognise the GMP batteries.

For me the products from Global media pro has worked very well, I am happy with them and all my clients seem to be. The main reason I chose them over Bricks (replacing my original 6 bricks) was the shipping cost and the extra 50Wh - which brings the R1 to a approx 2hrs per battery as opposed to 1 and a half.

I used to have a lot of trouble getting the Red bricks to charge, had to reseat them again and again, with GMP charger (and or batteries) I no longer have this problem. Also the GMP batteries seems to seat more securely on my battery plates.

The company I work for got an XC-4LSRED and it worked perfectly on several shoots, but then it just quit working at one point. It didn't seem to be getting any power.

We sent it in to Switronix for service, and they received it on a Monday, had it fixed later that day, and shipped it back to us on Tuesday.

They were extremely helpful and responsive over the phone, immediately knew exactly what was happening with our charger based on the RMA number, and were able to make a change to the shipping address quickly and with no hassle. Dealing with them was a great experience overall!

So we just used the Frezzi chargers from Amazon on 6 days of commercial work. They passed with flying colors. Usually 550.00 at B&H, Amazon for some reason has them for 185.00 each. Go figure. I should've bought five more.

Your Amazon link has them at $503.90.

Damn. In I should've bought ten. Lord knows why they were so cheap to begin with.
