Hey Guys,

Looking at investing in a RED EPIC MX package later this week and before I pull the trigger, I had a quick question in terms of hours on the camera. What number should I and future used brain buyers be looking for in terms of staying away from a camera? The one Im most likely getting has around 2400hrs on the head.

I'd say if the camera has run for 2400hrs, it's proven to be working alright and is about a quarter or less of the way through the expected life of its components.

That's based on the assumption that there might be something in the camera that has a 10,000 hr life expectancy or physical operation limit that might be reached in that time, without actually knowing what those limits are.

Basically, beyond the testing RED does before sending the camera out, it should have been run long enough to reveal any initial defects in its components, but not for so long that those components reach the end of their rated lives.

On its own, the hours on the camera isn't as much of a factor as other individual metrics and combined factors and variables that can be used to try and assess its value.

What Les said.. 5 years ago my S-W showing errors within its first hundred hours, a board was replaced under warranty and it's now still going strong. 3400+ hours and counting.

If it looks in good condition and all works well then the long hours is no concern. I know red cameras that run more than 10 times that without hiccups.

I say buy it and shoot everything you want to shoot because one day it will have a shelf life..right price go for it. You would buy a car with a 150,000 miles on it if the price is right so don't let hours on a camera stop you from your dreams.
