  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED Cambook

Just wanted to say that I recently had a chance to watch a camera being "tuned" with a similar card. Pretty amazing to see the changes in all the technical parameters as they ran through the various steps.

I was in the Panavision shop with Ann and her team down in Houston, Texas. Michael has a specific "room" set up on the second floor with all the monitors, charts, etc.

One particularly amazing observation was how the "colors" are affected when switching lenses while using the same camera. Really highlights the quality of some lens manufacturers and how "bad" a picture can get if the camera is not tuned.

Ironically, most of the "color" variations weren't "visible" in the HD monitors that crew had been using on set.

I'll have to say, if you are in Houston, Michael is a super talented technician.

Well, there go the property values!! :laugh:

For those of you who may not remember, there is a module on the RED101 videos that covers the DSCLabs charts. They do not cover the RED Cambook, but they do cover the larger charts that Brook speaks of. (The RED101 is also downloadable as of next week!)

It's a VERY in-depth module that compares the DSC charts against a MacBeth and shows you the result on Scopes! (I think Michael may even have this module someone on his website... Bug 'em!)

RED shipped my cambook the other day. I just did FedEx ground, but looks like it will be here tuesday.

I got the book the other day, I like it.
 
Shot tests with it last week and the glossy finish was challenging to deal with. That said, Graeme & Michael W. have quite ably explained why it is a necessary evil. We are taking the footage into a calibrated DI theater in Santa Monica on Thursday afternoon to peep it. Contact me off list if you would like to join us.

BTW, included with the charts is an index for reference chip values. That said, I love the idea of a file I could download to rapidly and accurately compare captured values to a known reference. The ability for the camera itself to use the charts for dynamic compliance is even more enticing.

Big thanks to RED and DSC for developing the RED CamBook and, despite the flack in this thread, pricing it very aggressively for such a precision item.

I have a ChromaDuMonde CamAlign in my shop, and I think I paid a lot more than a Red CamBook. CamAlign is amazing for what I can do with it, but it's not easy to bring it to the set. I will for sure get a couple of Red CamBooks for the field soon.
 
Yes Nook, for sure you paid a lot more. The CamAlign (metal-mounted) charts are all made individually, with corresponding serial numbers. They are also quite a bit larger.

However, the RED Cambook does offer a great package of charts at a price lower than what we are used to! ;)

Wouldn't it be cool if the DSP in a camera was smart enough that when looking at a frame chart it would ask the operator if they wanted it to take out the lens distortions to make the lines straight?

If it would make it any easier to incorporate - how about a test chart overlay on the camera monitor to match the position of the actual recorded chart - Redcine would have an easier task calibrating, having a predefined area with position and orientation of the chart.

"chart marking on" > temporal location > metadata > faster to scan in Redcine

(guesswork)
 
Any updates on this - like an Auto Calibrate (fix) function in RCX when loading a frame of the CDM 28 chart? That would be awesome

We are essentially shooting computers with a lens attached these days. Why not leverage that topology by using charts for calibration?

I love the idea of being able to put up a semi-transparent guide in the monitor to frame up the chart. Once you have known values in known places, Bob's your Uncle.
