  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED Bomb EVF alternative from Redrock

$595, that's kinda hard to beat, seems like a perfect edition for the scarlet fixed and maybe a better substitute for the hood-loupe on the lcd.

I bet these units aren't going to work very well in the cold... Please prove me wrong.

Hmmmm, if the visuals were the same quality (no telling at this point) I'd be going for the Red Rock. I like the size and price a lot more.

I like the red rock a bit more too, all things equal at this point. However, it seems like you have to buy the z-finder in addition to the screen, making a total price of around $1175, almost double the red rock price.

So is this like a Motorola Droid's screen resolution or something...eg 854x480 would be 1.22 megapixels?

I have to say 854x480 for $575 (with peaking) is a pretty good deal relative to 1280x784 for $3200. You could put the remaining $1800 towards a full 1080p LCD on set for checking focus.

If you were shooting 1.85, your usable resolution would be 854x461 (0.4 megapixels), vs 1280x691 (0.88 megapixels) for the Bomb.

Depending on if the peaking is really good, this could work. I wonder if it can address the subpixels individually - eg 2562x480 would work for me :) But I am extrapolating from conjecture here.

Personally I'd just prefer someone to make a 1920x1080 EVF. That'd put the optical viewfinder debate to rest and we could just buy that and stop worrying about buying new ones.

Until they make a 3D EVF that is :)

Meh...just a small monitor with Z-finder...I can't use those things...Redrock wins this round.

Not sure how anyone can win this round when neither products are actually out yet and won't be for some time and neither have been tested against each other. Surely that is kind of key to winning any round?

Well, the Z-Finder has been out a while. The Zacuto unit is just a small LCD with one of those slapped on. I don't think it even qualifies to be called an EVF.

According to a Tweet and the website, Redrock's EVF has now the following feature:

"Built-in HDMI passthrough for supporting additional monitors"

The price stays the same.

This is really what I missed about the Redrock EVF, this update makes it actually usable on a set.

Well we have yet to see if, and how, this might be compatible with a Red. I would guess this connects to an HDSLR via HDMI, so that might work with a Red also.

However I would just like to add, this might actually not be nearly as good as a good Finder (Z or other) attached to a LCD. I have had the chance to try one of ActionProduct's beta Viewfinders for the Red 5'6 LCD, and it was nearly more comfortable/ better than using the EVF. I don't know if I'm allowed to say this, but after having initially decided to manufacture it, they are presently examining the possibilities of making a small run of them, I'm definitely in line for one. I highly recommend it. I also think they are, and if they aren't they should, consider making one for the new 2.8 inch LCDs.

Cheers,
Damien

Hi Damien, if you read this please let us know whether you got the Action Products "viewfinder" and how it turned out for you in use. It is an interesting idea, however they are currently not making any, and they said in an email that they are waiting to see what the new Red touch screen 5" monitor is going to be like.

It seems to me that the Redrock EVF would be a particularly good option like me that use an LCD 90 percent of the time, but every so often ends up in a situation where an EVF is the only thing that will work.

Since there is only one dedicated LCD/EVF port on the Epic brain, this EVF could come in very handy to complement the touchscreen LCD.

HDMI problems

HDMI problems

The problem I have found with the Red One's HDMI port is some devices will not except it's signal.
I bought 3 different portable HDMI monitors (two were from ikan, the other was from Manhattan LCD) and all did not work.
I found the only ones that work are the monitors that support a wide range of resolutions. For example computer monitors.

Red claims that the HDMI output is standard. But some LCD manufactured claim it is not.

Has anyone else had this same problem?

So this makes me wonder will the Redrock microEVF have the same problem.
