  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Red Bashing On Forbes Website

Can someone - anyone - tell me why these two cameras are being compared at all? One records 1080 MPEG2 4:2:2 and the other records 4k RAW.

Yes, your pickup truck will tow a boat better than a Ferrari...

The only thing in common is they were announced on the same day.

I do think Canon will sell a lot more than Scarlet just based on Brand name. Scarlet will still be the better camera and RED the better company imo.

”At first glance, Scarlet might sound like the better deal. But RED cameras typically require hundreds of expensive extras. That’s part of the company’s strategy; lure filmmakers in with their cheaply made but expensive cameras, get 'em hooked, get them into prostitution and petty crime to feed their habit and when the crap really hits the fan, then RED move in and repossess their houses.”

• The C300 gives tomorrow’s filmmakers a superior upgrade option when they move beyond their inexpensive $20,000 camera.
• The transition from the 550D to C300 should be fairly seamless (give or take $19,000).
• The compact size makes it insanely versatile, especially compared to the 1.4 metre long and 1.2 metre high Scarlet.
• The C300 could become a leader in television production, as well as bail out the Eurozone and usher in an era of peace on earth.
• Canon are also looking to send a delegation of five C300's to the Middle East next March to finally put an end to the political dead-lock that has blighted the region for decades.
• The C300 is also making some very real progress in the areas of AIDS research / sustainable energy policy, quantum gravity and string theory.
• And it's got an ND filter - ND filters are notoriously hard to find and extremely dangerous to use - having it as an integral part of the C300 Canon estimate to save between 2,000 and 3,500 lives a year.

For a first post, this is AWESOME. Made me laugh a lot, thanks! :)

Don't be so sure. The crowd in that market already has the.F3. A better camera.

Dont be surprised when canon sells like 5 c300's.

Know what else much of that "crowd" already has? Atomos Ninja, KiPro Mini, nanoFlash, etc. ...

So WTF was Canon thinking giving the C300 a single-link SDI output? Even if you hate MPEG, in order to love the C300, it seems like you're gonna have to love 8-bit 4:2:2 ...

I do think the C300 will outsell the Scarlet-X in terms of global sales; Canon is a HUGE company.

It has gotten a lot of love from respected guys like Vincent Laforet who is "loving this camera" (even though he owns an Epic) http://www.canonrumors.com/2011/11/vincent-laforet-talks-about-the-c300/

Also, Zacuto and RedRock both have newly developed kits for the C300. So it looks like Canon tried to get as prepared as possible, BUT, I still think Scarlett won on Nov 3rd.

LET'S GET SOME SAMPLE SCARLET-X FOOTAGE OUT THERE RED!

*cough* paid endorser *cough*

Erik:

That was my initial reaction...because if you look at the video he mentions that he has not gotten paid to say so...which made me think why he even had to say that, you know?

• In addition to beating the RED One at its own game, the C300 undercuts the release of Scarlet, RED’s long-awaited low-cost alternative (at twice the price, mind you).
Uhhh....
• More importantly, the C300 gives tomorrow’s filmmakers a superior upgrade option when they move beyond their low-cost indie roots.
Uhm, what? How exactly does it give them a "super upgrade option" @ 20K? What is Scarlet then, a brick?!
• The compact size makes it insanely versatile.
Yeah, I know! Isn't Scarlet great? Oh, wait...
• Unless Scarlet proves to be a vastly superior camera...
I think you missed the part where Scarlet was proven to be a vastly superior camera...
• Expect smaller and cost-cutting studios to be the earliest adopters of the C300. Look for a few heavy hitters in Hollywood to experiment with the format.
Yeah, because smaller studios won't take a look at Scarlet! Or hell, Hollywood will "experiment" with it while the next dozen AAA+ films are actually shot on EPIC -- Scarlet's big brother.

Thanks for the laughs, but swing and miss good sir, swing and miss...

You can scratch that perceived Canon advantage, Scarlet and EPIC both support balanced or unbalanced audio inputs as standard features ...

Stuart, thanks for the info! I saw the stereo-mini jacks in the front and assumed that they were only unbalanced, as the Red One has mini-XLR connectors. BTW, can you headphone monitor out of the Scarlet or do you need an audio module to monitor from the camera?

One new, LOL, advantage that I'll give the C300 is the internal ND's. Of course for the price difference, you could buy a very nice mattebox and rails setup for the Scarlet... and still have money left over for mucho filters.

Vincent purchased his own EPIC-M. I find he, and Philip Bloom, to be fairly unbiased when it comes to cameras. They have an open mind, and more important, hands on experience. In the latest RC (#100) podcast he mentions pro's and con's of the Canon. It seems its biggest strength is low light capaiblity, which he says is the current king of the hill besting the F3, EPIC, and Alexa. Has has months of experience using both the EPIC and Canon C 300, so I believe him. Mobious looks fantanstic even as a web download.

I personally own two EPICs, so I don't plan on getting the C 300, but that does not mean I am blind to its strengths. It will do well on the market. I do plan on getting a 1DX for timelapse.

To be clear, I don't agree with the Forbes article. :)

I agree w/ the above poster... there is a curious nature here for us to eat our own. Let's not do that. (Not that I have any power to tell anyone how to do anything, LOL!)

Well, you can headphone monitor the audio out of the Epic, so I'd assume the same holds true for Scarlet.

Just to avoid confusion, the mini-jacks on the front of the Epic/Scarlet are TRS jacks, but they are not wired for stereo, each is wired for balanced mono audio.

Dont be surprised when canon sells like 5 c300's.

lensrentals.com is buying them, and they'll rent for about $210/day for 4 days, less for longer shoots.

I guess that's the end of the run then... :P

Here at RedUser, we tend to latch on to the one thing about a competing camera that Red does better (8-bit 4:2:2 1080p, FAIL). The same thing happened with the Alexa (1080p? No RAW or external RAW only? Lame.) Etc.

At the same time, we ignore everything else about these cameras that in truth, we like. Great low-light capability? ND? XLRs? On-board proxies? Cheap media? Long recording times, both on the media and with the batteries? Built-in tape hook? Weighs 3 pounds? etc.

RED is having ZERO difficulty selling their gear, they are constantly in backorder (the only thing not subject to change), and the product is constantly getting better. Each new camera from another vendor is an opportunity to see how to make the current and/or next-gen Red camera better. That's far more productive than picking out one spec that's not up to Red's standards and dismissing the camera as a whole.

The set of features in the C300 is extremely desirable to filmmakers, not necessarily to DPs. It would be helpful to understand why that is the case, IMO.

Okay, off my soapbox now.
