  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED & ATOMOS Ninja

Maybe I'm a bit blind, if this has been answered I do apologise,

The samurai or even the ninja, either one, as a pro-res module alternative/proxy module alternative, is it possible to get the file names and meta data etc. all in the stream that gets recorded on either set,

Start/stop with the record button and all? Just purely because I'd do offline first, for speed then an online when I'm back at a much more powerful work station

So wondering if this is a possibility for a proxy module alternative? do like the ability to review and use as a monitor from this

The ninja uses HDMI, which I doubt has the ability to transmit data like that (only SDI can, I believe), but I thought that I read something about the samurai working in this manner. You should email Atomos. Sound Devices PIX 240 and Ki Pro Mini (check the link to Mark Pederson's thread that I posted earlier) can do it for certain. Looks like Ki Pro Mini will also soon firmware update the ability to record Avid DNxHD, as well.

That workflow that you mentioned is my plan exactly.

Would it be possible to edit off of the Ninja's ProRes files and then relink the R3Ds for color timing?

I'm shooting 5K anamorphic and the only way we can monitor with the current build is through a device like this. If I'm using it already, it'd be great if I didn't also have to render files from Red Cine X.

I have the Samurai and it does record/stop using the timecode of the Epic/Scarlet. They are working on implementing the meta data info at the moment. RED has to fix the scaling problem however.

While HDMI can transport TC (Sony does it in the FS100), I doubt that the Scarlet does or if it's even planned. Plus, Ninja doesn't recognize it yet even with the FS100. I'd rather go with the Samurai.

BTW, audio is much better inside the Scarlet than in the Ninja, so use the Scarlet for audio if you don't record separately.

Anyone interested, I can confirm that the Ninja does not work with 1080p out through HDMI on the Red Epic. No signal.

I have used my NanoFlash, but I am inthe process of doing tests to get the color out of the camera to be "normal"(I use this term loosely).
I am using the internal color presets to "bake-in" a look I like. Let me tell you, Cine Gamma 3 is helping immensssely.
Will have something in a few weeks.

I understand having some kind of capture device if it is specific to your workflow. If everyone you work with needs ProRes then it makes sense to have a device. If it is a question of workflow/speed I would say you can run and gun with Epic or Scarlet by itself, and edit content pretty quickly. Lower the resolution and find your sweet spot for compression.

We always had problems with people saying they didn't want to "pay for the epic" even if it was the same price to rent as some other camera. There is just a bunch of mythology out there, and I think the guys that are derailing the thread (like me) feel like they are always fighting that battle.

Also I have a ninja, however I have not tried it with my Epic, but I'll give it a shot tonight and see what happens. I have a few HDSDI/HDMI converters too. I'll see if I can get a workable signal. I need to do this anyway because I am planning to use the Epic for a live event later this month.
