  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED ATA Cases

I am building a separate case for battery and charger (I use Anton Bauer). I dont put these with the camera so the AC go bring the smaller/lighter case into his hotel room and charge at night w/o dragging in the camera cases.

The charger (E) I have in the Camera case is strictly an power supply for me...I dont have RED batteries.

It's excellent to separate batts and one charger from the power supply with the body. Had the airline loose the batts once, but luckily I had the power supply.

If you are using the charger strictly for a power supply, then you may just want to buy the AC power adapter instead and save yourself $415, that is of course if you don't already have the charger in your posession. Go to the red store and click on the accessories link on the left, it's towards the bottom.

well the camera is 40lbs...not much you can do to reduce the weight any further unless its several cases. I usually ship these air cargo, anything under 100lbs is fine. (actually the airline limit is around 200lbs) but I like to keep everything under 75.

Actually the limit for checking in luggage is 66lbs, anything over that is not allowed anymore. That means that you have to ship any cases (or put your foot under the scale  ) that's over that limit. Now shipment is ok but it needs to be done in advance. So I strongly suggest to break it down into several cases instead. Me and a lot of my fellow DP colleagues travel a lot with a 235 package as an extra bonus camera on shoots. We're all having the gear in several cases. Since 9/11 this is very strict and it's very often you see people trying to distribute between their cases. So for checking in as luggage I strongly advice to keep it under 66lbs.

I usually use Delta Air Cargo or similar, I dont check it as luggage.
But the 66lb limit is a good point, I am working to reduce weight. Personally I dont want several cases, as I already have a dozen additional cases (lenses, batteries, etc)

Here is a revised designed based on Mikes feedback.

I understand but as I have around 275 travel days a year doing cargo all the time it's just to much of a trouble. As far as I see it we European film people outside of the US, especially LA, travel a lot more often. That makes it that I have to cargo the gear almost every week traveling to another country. It's so much easier with Peli or Storm cases. Don't get me wrong I would love for my gear to be more as yours digitalfx, nice and neat in one strong camera gear case (not that it's anything wrong with Pelicases) but from a frequent travel POW I don't think it's clever.

Cheers,

fred

Yes Fred, everyone will have different needs. Obviously I am building these cases for MY needs. I am just sharing the info in case anyone is interested. If the dont fit your needs maybe you can pull some data from what I am posting and the info will be helpful.

Bottom line is I am building cases for me. Your feedback is great though, thanks.

Digital, you mentioned that the camera would be ready to go out the box. In the illustration it's in pieces. Maybe I missed something but I liked the idea of pulling it out and shooting. I understand not everything will be mounted but just a few things would be great.

Digitalfx this is great!!! It's exactly what we need, templates so we quickly can laser cut our own cases. So I'm really grateful for your info, thanx!!!

No, what I meant was I wanted the build to be tool-less. In other words- pull the body out add rods, add handles (if needed) add Battery Quick Plate or Red Cradle. and you are ready to shoot w/o pulling out an allen wrench.

Unfortunately the Red Cradle requires an allen wrench to attach...but at least its just one bolt. I wanted to avoid all the bolts required for every assemble that the RED BRANDED case requires. It separates all the top mounts and bottom plates which requires a lot of bolts.

I think any reading the thread is getting a good perspective on the issues involved in addition to a functional alternative to the RED case which might not work for everyone. I also like the idea of some preset part pieces that could be assembled into one's own case.

More I think about it, that would be a fantastic thing for RED to offer - some schematic outlines that anyone could just arrange in photoshop themselves and provide to their case maker.

I agree, leave as much assembled as possible.

I like to leave the Uni mounts on the Red handle bar and the 15 mm adapter as well as the cradle.

Also I leave the red arm attached to the LCD. And with Evin Grants Zacuto solution the LCD mounts to the camera in a few seconds.

Nobody has commented on the excellent "Pink Floyd, London" engraving on the side of the case :-) that is great! Love the design, but anything like that I were to build would have to be "checkable" so it would need to fit under 66 lbs, meaning I would have to hope that I can fit everything in two cases. Hopefully a combined weight of 132 lbs would be enough...

Great design,

Great design,

Cant believe it took you guys so long to notice this... btw- I will have several case options for my gear. I will likely build another option strictly for carry-on.

Primarily this serves my purposes as;
1. General Storage of Camera and all accessories.
2. Air Freight case for rental shipments
3. Hauling gear to local locations

I didnt intend for this case to be used as a carry-on case. Its not normal to "carry-on" 35mm packages and our productions with RED will be very similar. This will be one of many cases that are needed for our typical RED package, for example:
Case 1- RED Camera + Accessories
Case 2- Ultra Prime Set
Case 3- 12mm Ultra Prime
Case 4- Arri FF4 set
Case 5- Arri MB20 Set
Case 6- Anton Bauer Batteries and Charger
Case 7 and 8- Intel-a-Jib
Case 9- Cartoni Dutch Head
Case 10- 1' Panel Light Kit
Case 11- Camera Assistant Accessories/Gear
Yeager and Sons SR Cart

and the list goes on...

Everyone will have specific case needs that match their productions and packages, o I will provide all the raw specs so you can build the case that fits your needs...just be patient as I need my case yesterday.
