  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED ATA Cases

Are you using the RED base or the ARRI base more? I would think for you the Arri one would make more sense, you should have your case set up for that always on. (sorry it's hard to turn off the inner AC in me)

One more thing, I am designing a case for my Standard Speed primes. My set is missing the 24mm, 100mm and 135mm lenses. I would like to design the case with holes for these three lenses so when I add them I have the case already fitted.

If you have any of these lenses can you please send a few photos and exact dimensions.

Thats a debate internally. I have an OConnor coming with an Arri base plate...I am hoping this will mate to the RED sliding plate which appears to be Arri standard. If so I am sticking with RED because its lighter and fits the shoulder mount.

If not im screwed.

Hate to burst your bubble but apparently they are a few MM off. I had Matt Uhry check that out for me and confirm. The ARRI sliding plates do not fit the Red base. In my opinion it's the biggest mistake they made with the accs.

thats not good.

I will have a 16mm package in here tomorrow. I'll confirm.

If you can't afford to ship these cases you probably cant afford what should go inside them.

Is that the best you got. All I'm saying is maybe I can find someone locally to build these, once again it's an ATA case and not a car. Shit can add up quickly! Probably cost a few hundrend for 4 cases.... BTW shipping to Michigan and YES I can afford it MIKE.

Sure you can probably get these closer to home, but if you ship these slow boat, the shipping shouldnt matter that much.

I have used several vendors before Encore and here are some things to watch for:
1. Encore saves all my drawings (even for years) so if I ever need to replace or modify a case, I simply call them
2. They are very prompt and have great customer service
3. They have driven to a local rental facility for me to confirm a lens size before production.
4. They make great cases.
Look at the image on page one of this thread- notice my large Ultra Prime case has different latches-(this case came from a different vendor) The latch is cheap, it is a simple spring load that pops open too easily. I hate these latches. This case also has a metal hinge, which again I hate. It has bent several of my matte box parts.
Encore is the first company to sell me on the cheaper, but better strap hinge which never harms the gear inside. And their latches are top notch.

Its the little details that make a huge difference.

Abu, I was just kidding. You know the old saying "if you have to ask. . . "

The Arri dovetails don't fit into the RED bottom plate. Those RED Arri plates are a lifesaver.

what do you use for a shoulder pad w/ the Arri plate?

how well does it fit the Red body?
does it weigh more that the Red bottom plate?

I am thinking about using it as my primary bottom plate and ditching the Red bottom plate. This will allow me to go straight to my Oconnor and keep the camera lower. But I will need to replace the Red dovetail with a Arri shoulder pad.

AC's have all kinds of tricks to rig up shoulderpads for arri base plates. I have never actually used a premanufatured one. i used to use neoprene gauntlets that i got when I worked on a crab boat in highschool. Just shoved them under the base when we go handheld. Element Technica is supposed to have a cool one in the works. They make the RED arri base plates, and other fine aks.

i've been thinking of making a delrin sliding base plate with a shoulder pad underit. So you can pull the camera off the Arri plate and slide in the shoulder pad. We'll see how good element technica's is.

Confirmed, the Arri plate will not fit the Red bottom plate. The Red bottom plates 19mm rods get in the way of the plate, otherwise it looks like it would fit nicely....its a shame because if the bottom plate fit the Arri system it would integrate much nicer into existing equipment.

FEEDBACK NEEDED ASAP:

Please view the attached jpg and give me any feedback. I am close to finishing up the case design. The case has two levels (similar to the Red branded Pelican) with a 24" long X 5.5" wide carpeted compartment in the back. This will accommodate all your rods (up to 24") plus cables, and bolt sets, arri plates, etc.

The case is a standard ATA case like the type shown at the front of this thread.

What I have done differently from the RED branded Pelican is keep the basic camera body assembled so that tools are not required to build the camera. You simply add rods and accessories. Also I have better designed the spaces for the specific parts as the RED case did not fit the parts properly w/o removing all the wingnuts, etc.

Please give me your thoughts as soon as possible as I plan on completing this design tomorrow and having my case built immediately.

I STILL NEED THE FOLLOWING INFO:
1. Photos and exact dimensions of EVF
2. Photos and exact dimensions of Quick Plate

If you have this info please send it to me asap.

Thanks

Looks good!

IMHO dual level cases never really work that well. You always need whats on the bottom floor ;) So your always looking for a place to put the top level on the cart while you futz around in the bottom. Any way you could incorporate it into the lid?

The foam in the trays always gets beat up because of all the extra taking in and puting out.

Not a bad idea, I'll look into that.

I had to do dual level to keep it all in one case, as is the case is 25"X25" X13" as -is, so I didnt want it any larger. Having two cases does not make sense.

although...most of the stuff on the bottom is going on the camera when you open the case, so reality is the top level is the stuff you will be looking for later.

True in theory, but in practice it never seems to work out that way. It defies logic, but It seems to have happened to me a million times. Also when your diggin out the camera the first time you need to set that tray somewhere. OOps!!! the AC just knocked it off the cart and everything just spilt all over everywhere. When an AC is in a hurry looking for something he /she is going to be cussing that tray to high heaven.

Build it into the lid, with a hinge and some clasps to hold it up. How heavy do you estimate the case to be? Flyable?

If you build it into the lid you can shave some inches off the case depth. and some lbs of case.

75lbs is a bitch for flying. i don't know if thats a concern.

well the camera is 40lbs...not much you can do to reduce the weight any further unless its several cases. I usually ship these air cargo, anything under 100lbs is fine. (actually the airline limit is around 200lbs) but I like to keep everything under 75.

You'll already have two cases if you include Batts, but I agree with the idea of making a single system case. overall I really like the layout, and I think it's pretty logical.

I just think making the lid a hideaway compartment makes a lot of sense, and you will probably lose 8 lbs off the case.
