Red Asa?

I have not been shooting my RED Build 16 any faster than ASA 250. Any faster ASA and the image becomes unacceptably noisy. Agree or disagree...comments? Thanks.

First things first you should do blackshading and make some tests.
Sensor is optimized between 320-500 ASA. In midtones and highlight there are no difference. I have never tried 250ASA and I don't think doing that. You get noise when you use 3200K or lower. The sensor is optimized for 5000K.
Also you are losing dynamic range under 320ASA...

I agree that there are some noise in the shadows but when you pull down black a little that noise disappear.
But, remember that the film negative 500ASA has the same or more grain then the RED's 500ASA.

You don't loose dynamic range at any setting of ISO, you just shift where range lies. If you go below 320, you're putting all your DR into the shadows and are in danger of bad highlight clipping. As you push it up over 320, you'll get better and better highlight retention, at the expense of some noise lower down.

You should easily have no bother shooting in the 320-800 range without excessive noise issues.

Thanks for the comments. I have shot at ASA 800 and the image just looks bad (on Panasonic 17" HD monitor). Also, if you export a 4K uncompressed TIFF, you can really see the degradation in image quality.

I saw that the RED's 800ASA is better then the Sony Cinealta 320ASA with +3DB in a low light scene.
I think that the RED materials over 640ASA have to pass through some noise reduction after a main export (low light scenes).

The asa-settings only affect metadatas - the whole asa-system of the RED is not comparable to film emulsion`s sensitivies. Bevor shooting, set the cam to RAW mode, forget the asa-setting of the cam, try to make tests to find out at which light levels your camera starts to clip in the highlights and starts to make noise in the shadows. Afterthat you will know how to expose with the cam to get the results you need. Good luck. OLI.

i find shooting 4k at 320-800iso works for a final out to HD blu ray ..

some of this noise comes down to the person doing the CC ..
i've had persons over here and they have very noisy blacks at 320iso .. then i'll adjust the same shot in Redcine and there is no noise .. the higher the ISO the harder it is to fine tune the CC adjustment ( lower blacks) ..
