Hey guys,

I hope some of you can help me.

The production company I work for have been shooting on the RED extensively abroad in a documentary format, and in quite tough situations. We have recently encountered a problem when shooting at 4k. On most 4k shots there seems to be flickering ' checkerboard' artefacts appearing.

Here is a link to an example. Not quite sure what to do. Any suggestions?

And how exactly am I supposed to know if that is really RED footage or if its a picture of a poorly pasted up poster with lots of air bubbles?

:) That's what I actually thought when I looked at the picture.

So, not that I have any ideas, but could you post a short R3D showing the issue ?

Also have you noticed any pattern to when it shows up and when it doesn't?

Curious as to your settings... what project format (looks like a non-RED size)? Which REDCODE setting? What lens? Camera serial number?

I have never seen this before.

Not only does there appear to be the checkerboard 'bubbling', there also appears to be a weird 'rainbow' effect going on in and through the bubbling (you can see it clearest in the dark section to the bottom right of the Vodafone sign). This to me indicates it's probably something optical (either lens related maybe, or maybe related to the OLPF?)

Possibly a damaged Lens coating?

To me it looks like a codec error since the artefacts are only present in the lower left quadrant of the image. There's a distinct line in the middle where the artefact ends.

Maybe it was shot from inside an automobile with a polarizer in front of the lens in an attempt to cut the glare off the vehicles glass? A lot of car's windows interfere with the light in interesting and inconsistent ways so the polarizer can create some rather funky wave patterns if it is aligned just wrong.

I have seen this problem before here on reduser. Last person that had this problem needed to send in the camera. Get a support ticket and talk to red-guys.

It looks like data errors from a bad copy. Do you have the original media you can do another copy from or run redundead on?

My guess the lens or sensor has been exposed to some form of moisture or humidity.

I've seen this problem before - it is almost always a result of a bad transfer as Deanan said. The bad copy can come from bad hardware [CF reader, cables, logic board, etc.] or from using an "insecure" form of transfer [Explorer, the Finder, etc].
