Not sure why RED themselves would be sharing the info. There are several Thunderbolt to PCIe expansion boxes coming real soon. If they properly implement a full set of PCIe functionality, then the Rocket will work. The Sonnet looks nice, but it's not the best fit for the Rocket, IMO. The Sonnet enclosure is a PCIe v2.0 X4 unit with an X16 electrical slot. So the slot is fine for the Rocket, but the Rocket will only be able to run at half its potential speed. Not that it's a bad thing, it's still 4X the performance we get from an ExpressCard34 mobile Rocket system right now.
Magma has a couple of these expansion boxes coming. Look for one that has an 8-lane slot. The RED Rocket is PCIe v1.1 X8, which utilizes the same bandwidth as a PCIe v2.0 X4 slot, and about the same bandwidth as a Thunderbolt port.
OTOH, the Sonnet enclosure is compact and thin compared to a few of the other solutions coming. And cutting the Rocket bandwidth in half will be fine in most cases... It will still handle 24fps just fine and it won't saturate a Thunderbolt port, which means there will be bandwidth left over to connect something else.
It can play back 4k files back to the laptop in "full" mode and
rendering to prores was pretty much realtime when I tested.
Not sure why RED themselves would be sharing the info.
So anyone knows if any solution is out yet or about to be out to allow 8x connection to thunderbolt to utilize the full potential of RedRocket?
