  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED Announces RED Rocket Thunderbolt Enclosure!

Holy *#$!... Davinci Resolve on Windows and now RED Rocket on Thunderbolt... awesome!!!!

The video looks like just a regular third party enclose though.

I may be wrong, but the Rocket looks to be installed in a 3rd party enclosure...not a RED product. It seems the Red Rocket is mounted in a Sonnet Thunderbolt to PCI expansion chassis.

true, but it just shows pci expansion TB boxes are viable. the sonnet is a 4x defaults speed, who knows what kind of performance you can get out of the magma box. which is 8x.

best year for gear and software.

ever.

This is made by Sonnet and is similar to other pci-e extenders except that it is via thunderbolt. With epic footage here at IBC they had as a demo there was no stutter at half res. Looked nice and simple.

Looks like the Express/34 adapter is shipping in October. Any dates on the expansion chassis or the RAID?

Looking forward to RED Stations in Thunderbolt versions :-)

Good to know the Sonnet Thunderbolt Expansion Chassis is working with RED ROCKET. That should give us roughly 4 times as fast rendering? For the requirement of the jobs, although I have the MacBook Pro compatible expansion chassis, I've been taking my MacPro lately because of the slow rendering of MBP/x1PCIe speed. But the MacPro is so heavy, so I hope this and the Thunderbolt storage can be fast enough to do serious jobs.

Not sure why RED themselves would be sharing the info. There are several Thunderbolt to PCIe expansion boxes coming real soon. If they properly implement a full set of PCIe functionality, then the Rocket will work. The Sonnet looks nice, but it's not the best fit for the Rocket, IMO. The Sonnet enclosure is a PCIe v2.0 X4 unit with an X16 electrical slot. So the slot is fine for the Rocket, but the Rocket will only be able to run at half its potential speed. Not that it's a bad thing, it's still 4X the performance we get from an ExpressCard34 mobile Rocket system right now.

Magma has a couple of these expansion boxes coming. Look for one that has an 8-lane slot. The RED Rocket is PCIe v1.1 X8, which utilizes the same bandwidth as a PCIe v2.0 X4 slot, and about the same bandwidth as a Thunderbolt port.

OTOH, the Sonnet enclosure is compact and thin compared to a few of the other solutions coming. And cutting the Rocket bandwidth in half will be fine in most cases... It will still handle 24fps just fine and it won't saturate a Thunderbolt port, which means there will be bandwidth left over to connect something else.

Expresscard is x1 gen1
Rocket running at x4 gen1 on a laptop is pretty amazing to see.
It can play back 4k files back to the laptop in "full" mode and
rendering to prores was pretty much realtime when I tested.

Booyah! Man I can't wait for this...my MacBook Air will become a portable realtime 4k machine. Unbelievable.

I want a MAXX DIGITAL macbook pro unit so bad... and now thunderbolt

Because Ted from RED was pimping the info and not just someone from Sonnet. If it was just third party, fair enough, but I also agree an official thread is warranted.
