  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED and P+S Technik IMS

I was also at the Broadcast exhibition in London last week, and P&S had a Red with the IMS mount fitted on their stand. It's the first time I've actually seen one up close fitted to a camera, and I must say it is a really nice mount.
It's a real bummer that Red & P&S can't get this sorted out, although I use PL mount lenses,I would certainly buy this mount just to be able to use some of the more specialised still glass which is out there, without the hassle of unscrewing the PL.
Doesn't look like it's going to happen, especially if they aren't talking to each other.
Tom.

Not forgetting that Red and P+S Technik are kind of in direct competition with each other (Red One vs SI-2K), so having a P+S Technik part on a Red camera is kind of like them parking their car on Red's lawn.

Im not so sure about this. IMS is just a product that enhanses the cameras ability to alternative mount lenses. I might be mistaken but I wouldnt think that Red have any problem with Zeiss or Angenieux lenses on their camera although Red make their own lenses.

Clarification:

- P+S Technik is not making SI-2K camera.

- SI-2K is made in USA by Silicon Imaging that
is a privately held company with locations
in Troy, NY and Costa Mesa, CA.
Silicon Imaging, Inc.
25 Covington Court
Niskayuna, NY 12309

- P+S Technik is just a small SI partner that makes IMS.

[groaning] yes, I know P+S Technik don't make the SI-2K (the clue is kind of in the title ...SI = Silicon Imaging :sarcasm:)

My understanding is that P+S Technik don't just make the mount for the SI-2K camera - it's not quite the same situation as the IMS on Red, they also make the chassis for the SI-2K and various accessories. They're a little bit more in bed with each other than just making a lens mount.

Anyway, that's my theory, for what it's worth - namely that it doesn't make sense that Red have severed all potential links (no matter how much sense it makes & how much demand there is for it) just because of slightly grating Germanic business-to-business communication skills, it must also be something else more fundamental (i.e. P+S Technik are seen as part of a potential threat/competition to Red cornering the market in this area).

David you are right, I forgot that P+S Technik makes also some of accessories for SI2K.

Right, they make the mechanics and the assembly of the SI 2k.
And I back your theory. There also is, probably, some sort of "buy American" issue...

There's something commercially slimy and reeking of trade restraint to invalidate a warranty if you did nothing that causes any a damage or irreversible modification to your camera. If the SDI outputs went out, should I not get service because I put on an IMS? If I put on an IMS and did no damage to the camera what so ever, on what grounds should this void my trade in privileges. There aren't any.

I guess the workaround is to buy Birger mount in addition and say any "tampering" was done on that installation or does IMS leave a distinct "fingerprint"?

I'm a neutral party (though I'd love to see the IMS get condoned)... I think the issue is that people have already done damage to their cameras installing mounts, and that Red doesn't believe they should have to eat those repair costs. I admit this is hear-say on my part, but if people are damaging their cameras, I can understand Red would take a cautious stance. I'm not sure why the IMS would be any more dangerous than the Red Nikon mount, but having not used the IMS, perhaps there is indeed more to it. That said, I hope Red and P+S Teknik will continue their discussion on the mount and work something out... ultimately, if Red says I lose my chance to upgrade to Epic by using this mount, I'm not going to use it. Too much to lose when there are plenty of PL and F-mount options out there.

this topic has suddenly turn into conspiracy theory. Do you think we should speculate in this area ? I still believe it's purely due to technical reason..not that i'm interested, but hopefully such discussion wont divert into something else

BTW, IMS doesn't leave any distinct "fingerprint".

the actual red position on the topic, please tell me if i'm wrong, is that the warranty is void with IMS because of the cable housing.
and this is an official statement.
i see also that RED and P+S are staying out of the discussion ( at least in public).
whatever the reason,I'm sure it must be a technical reason.
i don't want to think that there's an issue with the SI2k.
arri is producing digital cinema cameras, but its mattebox is a perfect accessory for the red one without any issue.

what i don't get, but RED and P+S are free to keep their secret, is:
why don't you sit around a table and find out a way?
IMS is a great idea, would work perfectly on every red one out there. Having such a huge amount of lenses to experiment with, i can only imagine what could be done. i'm still dreaming to look through the Red's viewfinder and see what Leica, contax, Canon (Nikon, of course..) and whatever lens could do with a motion picture camera. at no cost.

So,
please...
do it.
c'mon. it's just a cable...
maybe secretly.
just do it.

Warranty Issue?

Warranty Issue?

If you live in a cold weather climate and used it outside of the new Red operating or storage temp ranges, you may have already voided your warranty.

Dear RED One owners and users, who are interested in the IMS.

Please have a look onto our website to read about our opinion and our efforts.

We are still hoping for the best.

P+S TECHNIK, Munich

IMS looks a great product and I wish you get the "Red certificate" soon. I have some old cristal from SLRs waiting for it.

I love P+S products, own a miniPRO and a Mukasey Bag, both superb products.

good luck!

FG,
You've finally posted something that makes perfect sense.

RED you guys are better than this. Why the non communication with a manufacturer that benefits your customers and enhances your product?
If it's for business reasons then fine, state it as so. But don't hide behind the cable issue, because we all know the problem is with communication and not a technical one. You guys are smart, this can be overcome.

I know you don't need P+S Technik. But if, as Jim says, you try to think like your customers do, then it makes at least good PR to get this to happen.
I personally am not going down this road. But, as hard as it is to believe, Filmmakers Gang actually has a point "this dirty laundry is touching your reputation".

the only hope is that something magic could happen during NAB 2009.
please, RED an P+S, do find a way.

thank you,

Alessandro

Maybe all this happened just because of some cultural/manner issues between american and german culture?
There can be a lot of misunderstandings that could be solved with a little patience ... it's been years and still i'm not able to translate into english my sense of humour
