RED and Arri...

What a combination!

What a combination!

Jim, you are attacking the competition with more than the ol' one two. Your open communication, business model, prices, revolutionary products and, now, inviting open comparison with the established players. You're not giving them a chance to catch their breath!

We are all desperately waiting for Michael Bravin that he finally jumps here in this tread

and gives us more info about ARRI's opinion for that comparison test possibility right now...

All of us are eager to see what happens. Including RED, ARRI, SONY .. + aloot consumer market corps (Canon, Panasonic..) It's like walking through a buffet and selecting what you like to eat.

Probably the only company directly against this event is Kodak :)

Until Canon, Nikon and Panasonic can come up with a fast enough sensor that doesn't need line-skipping, and they can shoot RAW... they don't qualify to join the party.

yeah, get him out of bed right now. What is he thinking? There is no holidays. What weekend? We have films to do...

In all seriousness, I look forward to the test. And, I wouldn't underestimate ARRI. I'm sure there will be areas where Alexa will put RED to shame. They know a thing or two about cameras.

What areas do you think that will be? I'm curious. Resolution? Color? Dynamic Range? Sensitivity? Frame rates? Feel?

I'm up. Where is Michael Bravin?

The most of ARRI "fans and freaks" will count on this:

"Using sophisticated motion estimation and spatial-temporal image filtering,
ARRI Relativity software offers Texture Control, (such as adding or
subtracting grain,) Film Simulation, and Space Time Converter (spatial resampling
and frame rate conversion.) ARRI Relativity™ software is powered by Pixel
Strings™, developed and licensed from CINNAFILM. Other product highlights
include several new ARRI lighting instruments and the new HD video assist for
film cameras."

OK... that sounds very impressive. Let's do the tests.

Jim

Let's make no mistake here. Arri has a great program. My bet is that the two camera systems will distance the competition. But it sure will be fun to see exactly what each company has to offer. It will define what happens next.

Jim Jannard: "I'm up. Where is Michael Bravin?"

Arri_01.jpg

Michael Bravin: "Wait a bit. I'm still measuring Alexa's "weight", after that have important

consultations with my 'coach and trainers' then coming on this comparison ring,

dunno when but let you know very soon (!!!???)"

I can only guess because I have not had a chance to play with Alexa. One thing I like about it is, what looks like very high quality finish and German attention to detail and engineering. R1 looks and feels tacky compared to D-21.

I'm expecting that low light capabilities and DR will be a (very) close call.

Perhaps Alexa will be more reliable. It is certainly as important as image quality and just reliability alone could make Arri camera a winner.

asleep? LOL

Yes of course, just talked about the interest of others. Shooting RAW is for me same as professional. Shooting in any other way is a compromise. Line-skippy and h.264 is defectively compromise and not good for final result.

Wow this is interesting. Red has nothing to lose here because they have Monstro waiting in the wings and Arri has bet the farm on Alexa. Jim seems to have a distinct advantage because he will win the resolution war easily and the sensitivity war seems to be close. If I were Arri I would be nervous.

With millions of minutes recorded on RED, what makes you believe that the D21 is more reliable? Do you have personal experience on the D21? Or do you think this could just be an assumption?

It is an assumption, of course. I only had a rudimentary look at D21. It seems very well built. I liked the feel of the buttons, precise housing, and attention to detail. I expect Alexa to be even better still.

R1 is pretty well tested, can't ignore that. I used it in very remote locations and it didn't skip the beat. But, it would not come as surprise if Alexa proves very dependable.

There are other considerations, beyond the test. Arri is well-established and has fantastic support centres around the world. I can drive 10 minutes and have any Arri gear tested and fixed. The guys will go out of their way to help.

Having said that, when can I get my Epic, please?

Having played a little with the Arri test rig, and looked at your footage of the MX I'm struck by how close they truly are.

It will come down to ease of use, resolution in post and reliability, not to mention the classic "shooting high speed at the same lens focal length" thing.

The D21 is actually slightly slower overall to use with the various record systems, but sadly the Red has a greater perceived slowness with some drive and re-boot issues that are hard to hide with the shooting method as they happen during the day as interruptions rather than regular, expected occurrences. Of course, dual battery systems and the like can really help this perception.

Did you ever try to use BEBOB-ROUGE ML-120 a Hot Swap Adapter for the Red One Camera?

"BEBOB-ROUGE ML-120 allows to swap the battery without interruption of the camera powering.
When the battery runs empty, the ML-120 will take over the powering of the camera for 2 Minutes, giving a simultaneous alarm.
The ML-120 replaces the Standard V-mount on the RED Drive cradle, or other 3rd party battery mounts.
Additionally, it features a 12 V DC D-Tap port, secured by a 5 A self-resetting fuse.
After use the ML-120 self-charges from the camera battery"

arri is closed at weekends, exactly 7 pm fridays, i can drop red a email and get an answer/help within minutes...if i have software problems. with hardware nobody can help you over the weekend. (arri is closed and red is from my POV far away)...thats the reason for backups i use.

but i wouldnt deny that i wish pinewood becomes a full support center where i can make the upgrade to escape the customs hell.

reliable....giess we will see in two to three years how well the red and ass. are made.
