  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED Anamorphic lenses? A smart move?

We in India make all our films in 2.35:1 only. There is nothing called non-anamorphic here in any language. There will be a grate demand it RED makes Anamorphic lenses.

A lot of Indian films are using Super-35 to achieve 2.35:1 these days.

Anamorphics at Camtec in LA

This is my first post. I was reading this thread and thought I should mention that we have the Hawk V Series Anamorphics, as well as the new Hawk V-Lite Anamorphics. We also carry Todd-AO anamorphics and the older Japanese Kowa anamorphics which we have redone and adapted for PL mount. Red with anamorphic is a really cool format. We are currently doing a feature film with Red MX's and Hawk V and Kowa anamorphic lenses. The Hawk V's are very good lenses. The V lites are even better in that they retain the optical quality at a smaller size. The Kowas are sharp, low contrast and flarey. The Todd-AOs are still not in our rental inventory but should be ready soon.

kavon is a dear friend of mine and camtec is a great house that i love doing business with. their glass is very well maintained by an expert staff that has been working in hollywood for decades. we have done many jobs with the anamorphics...i posted one a while back, miranda cosgrove, and there have been others...if you are in la, you should check them out.

I don't think anamorphic lenses are even close to becoming obsolete. It has a lot going for it apart from it's unique distortions.
The biggest advantage of anamorphic is it's FOV advantages.
Shooting in NYC on location in tight spaces, anamorphic allows you to cheat the space, getting a 15mm FOV for a 30mm DOF. That keeps the image looking flatter and less cheap. Plus I don't really like the distortions wide angle lenses creates. I much prefer quality anamorphics.

It's also more flexible than a larger sensor with those FOV advantages. Most lenses are built to cover Super35mm and not every job requires or can afford anamorphic. Having a Super35mm size sensor as opposed to a Full Frame gives much more flexibility on case by case basis.

Hi Clayton,

Do you rent your anamorphic lenses and how can I contact you?

Jaime.
