  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED, ALPHA, BETA, etc.

Your about to finish a shoot. Everything goes wrong. People are running around on the blame game. Things get worst.

It's good to know people like Mark are out there that don't lose their heads under pressure. This is the #1 quality to look for when working in this industry.

It's no surprise you are so successful.

Well done.

I was the first user to report that codec errors were still there with Build 16 on this forum. Notice I said "still" there, because I'm not sure they are really that much worse than they are/were in Build 15. It's almost impossible to tell since we can't go back to Build 15. You'd need to shoot two cams with different builds side by side.

The reason I posted was obviously not to put the blame on RED for claiming that the problem had been fixed, as I knew this was Beta and had no problem with that, but to warn other users that might be tempted to upgrade thinking the problem had been solved. And obviously to give RED some feedback. Which is what Beta builds are for. Stuart started working on the problem even before I could send him the log files and hasn't stopped since, as more users reported similar problems.

I'd like to add that we went to shoot some scenes with moving water again this weekend with the latest build (3.1.6), and this time didn't get any errors (4K 16:9 25fps). It's impossible to tell if it comes from the new build being better or maybe because there was slightly less contrast. So it's very important that people keep testing these Beta builds so that we can get closer to 100% confidence.

To put things into perspective, I also shot some HDV stuff last week and the footage is riddled with ugly artifacts. But there it's just a feature of the format that will never be fixed. ;)

Gunleik, you are going to like build 16 ! RedSpace allows for some very intuitive working with the camera when you're shooting locations and need to move fast. You also get footage that looks fantastic "out of the box" and it really simplifies the post workflow if you don't need to do any fancy CC.

Mark,
Great post.... great points!

Cheers
Dave
