  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Red ADMITS their own cable destroyed my EVF and now they won't fix it!

Moving back to the original post here...
Tony Dean: was there any way they told you that you could test for this issue to prevent it?
We would like to know, especially the AC among us..
Tony, we're sending a PM your way.

Nothing other than careful visual inspection.
I bought new braided EVF and LCD cables and a backup at $240 a pop just to be safe.

So nothing to prevent it before it actually happened if there was no visible problem with the cable?

Also, we're sorry to hear this. As Alexander mentioned, a simple fuse might have saved a lot of money. Man, two MX chips, sorry again.

feel free to add more....but again, i think all has been said. Should we list the plus / minus? what more to add that will help anyone?

True it was getting stale, but now it seems we've hit on something that has happened elsewhere. Might be benificial for everyone to keep bumping this and see what else pops up.

Like we said, the guy we work for is not known to feel strongly about something if there isn't a solid reason, but that's just our view.

yes, cable tester sounds great that's one.....and i'd like to see RED make some more secure cables. i don't know who has had a problem with cables....i for one have, but none that have fried a monitor.....and have had to replace cables at my own expense. I also realize they are delicate and need to be handled with care. Once you have "other" hands handling your gear....well, shit happens. And how many of "us" roll our cables in a circle? Not a good idea with RED cables....do you know how many wires are in that cable?....a shit load. And small solder jobs etc....all that flexing etc....gonna happen.

ok...cable tester; or a larger or fatter cable with large gauge wiring possibly? Again, i've junked two cables in my time and cut one open to re-solder....WoW are those wires small....But back to OP....a year later you have a problem and you ask for a free fix? if you never used it i get it....but again, c'mon we're all rather intelligent folks here....i think we can see this clearly.....great, in the end seems like some good does come of this.....doesn't change fact that some folks act out in a rather childish manner.

I think the point here is to try to get to the bottom of what might be a known issue, not to criticize the people who bring it up. i.e "Gang Rape"

Gang Rape was "actually" meant for all that were jumping on the OP.....it just piles on when you "diss" RED. That is what was meant mr. Barett....so i was not criticizing the OP with that statement. I was however criticizing him for his stupid post........as you can tell i've crossed paths with RED in the past......per Jarred's post....but i never criticized them for how they handle customer service...i'm sure if you took a "true" pole to that you'd find a 99% rating....or thereabouts--i've never gotten this sort of cust. service from Sony or Panasonic.... have you?

Now you have me scared. The original complaint was in my opinion completely out of order in such a public place with so little opportunity for RED to respond. This post suggests there is a serious problem. I am more than happy to stock up on cables but when it trashes the camera without any knowledge to me? I can live with my cables 'frying the ports' on my MacBook Pro because I will always have two more to play with but when a cable trashes a camera? I want to know more. How do you stop it? A question to RED .....is this really possible?

It was just confusing I guess since we don't use the term "Gang Rape" lightly in this office.

NEW PAGE BUMP

That's the answer we're all looking for here: "Is this really possible?" so far, only from what we can tell, two people have been told that Yes, it is possible, but it would be great to hear an answer straight from Red on here.

Secondly, it seems the original poster was asking that: if this is possible, as he says he was told, then is it A: a design flaw or B: something all red users just have to accept as a part of owning a Red, that their cables may destroy the camera or other gear without any warning, and this is all just a risk we take as users.

We shall see what tomorrow brings... It's sure to be interesting.

I really hope you guys conduct yourselves more professionally with clients than you have done here. Reputational risk is a double-edged sword. There are ways to go about things, and this is not a good way. You come accross as childish trolls. Stop the bumps, your posts lost all credibility when your leader did.

People are looking for answers Marc. You're not just saying this to us, but also to Iain who has a real concern he would like addressed. Would you really feel comfortable taking that away from him?

People can figure out the answers already just by the fact that there's only one cable attached to the monitor.

If you're providing power to the monitor with the same cable that is also sending data, by its very nature, there is a chance that if the cable gets screwed up, it will fry something by sending power to something that was expecting data, not power.

This is why the RED LCD is so small and light. Power supply and maybe some of the controller stuff is in the Epic body, not the LCD itself.

That's also why it doesn't have, say, a HD-SDI input.

If you don't like the tradeoff (compact, lightweight LCD in exchange for no HD-SDI and a small chance of frying everything), use a 3rd-party monitor via HD-SDI.

Or... use the RED LCD and try not to bend that specific cable out of shape.

Also... try not to bend RED out of shape with combative posts on REDUSER.

All good?

Hi Bruce, please read the entire thread. 2 MX chips also destroyed.
No combativeness here, just staying in subject and trying to help everyone figure things out and having questions fully answered.
Thank you!

Well, maybe it's the same issue: power that was supposed to be routed from the Red to the monitor ended up getting routed back to the Red data circuits instead due to cable fault?

Look, personally I find having power and data over the same wire a bit scary. But then USB and Firewire manage it... and I haven't heard of any class action lawsuits against Apple because a bad FW800 fried someone's drive. It happens, sure. But the convenience outweighs the risk for most. And it's not a hidden risk: it's risk that should be obvious to the end-user because there is only one cable involved and the thing's getting powered somehow.

I once designed my own monitors - thought for a while about separating controller and LCD - eg make the screen part super-lightweight so you could put it on a Noga arm more easily. But then after I managed to fry two LCDs by connecting the cables up backwards, I was like "nah... this is just too terrifying".

If you don't like having power and data on the same cable, just don't use devices that do that! Eg just use a 3rd-party monitor - that's why Epic has those nice HDMI and HD-SDI ports.

Totally valid. So you fall on the side of: users must except that their Red or other gear may be destroyed without warning and with no current testing options to prevent such a situation and that's just part of being an owner. Totally understandable. I guess Iain and the original poster are looking to hear the Red stance on this.
Thanks again!

Sorry dude, just trying to help.

General rule for all electronic devices: if there's one cable providing both power and data: either treat that cable with care... or don't connect it to something expensive!

Not rocket science.

Agree that a cable tester or maybe some little fuses or whatever on the Epic circuit board would help. Or they could make Epics cost less so that if we blew one up it wouldn't be a huge disaster. That would be my personal vote. However, since "very expensive" for me usually equals "over $3000" they have a way to go :)
