  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Red ADMITS their own cable destroyed my EVF and now they won't fix it!

Exactly the way I like to work as well. I sometimes get in trouble I think because I don't get too rattled on set, which can be interpreted as maybe I don't care or don't see the urgency of a situation.

Precisely! When it hits the fan I like to become even calmer, no sense getting stressed and adding to the panic.

When it comes time to hire the next crew, do you think the producers will think about the guy who remained calm and made things work, or the guy who freaked out and broke something?

Don't worry guys... it takes a lot to get on the shit list. We have a pretty high understanding of when things go to shit people can get bent out of shape.. temporarily.

I tried to convey in my post that complaining isn't going to get you on the list.. Remember, you are only seeing half the story here.

fair enough.

This is no way to complain. In my stills world where we are tethered from a camera back to the computer via Firewire I cant even begin to tell you how thrilled I would be if we had a cable last a year. We get through so many (and they wipe out ports on our MacBook Pro's - literally fry them) that I have a trade (shop) account. Average life of a 5m cable, 3 shoot days!

I hope that's not Eric's personal package that he's shooting with, since now he is being told he will be refused service from the company.

Eric Hurt... First of all you need to use your real name on here. You should be banned for a bunch of different reasons, but the reason you just did was purely for that.

Second.. sorry this happened to you. There are a lot of little pins in the EVF cables.. if you bend them in the field and don't straighten them out you could screw things up. Not just with RED cables, but pretty much any cable that sends power through it. You refused to send in your cable for inspection... so we are only to assume.

But don't worry... you will never need to worry about this again.... as we will never sell you anything ever again. We love our customers. They mean the world to us. We are ok when customers complain.. we listen. Complaining doesn't make you a bad customer... it is everything else about you that makes you a bad customer :)

One good thing out of this thread though is the idea of a little field cable tester... I like that. Ill check with the engineers if its something we can do.

Jarred,
with due respect, i think you have better things to do than jump on this wagon and let Brent handle it. And i think it is in bad taste to say what you said even though it fumes inside of you to hear what this guy is saying.....I think everyone can see the writing on the wall and seems clear this customer has had evf/cable after warranty--i think a year...and of course if it worked for a year, then likely he bent something.....but to my post, i don't think you need to pull out the bazooka for this guy and ban him from red products for his posts....if he feels that's what it takes, then let him....there's enough people here responding about rEd's credibility to act proper and most of us have seen this.....I think most will agree your time is better spent at the top and not in a shallow pool of discussion here.

Welcome to the list mr. Friday.

heh heh heh. just kidding.

Anyways... I'm not the kinda guy that will ever step down from supporting my troops... no matter how insignificant it may appear to be. Disrespect them, and you Disrespect me. That's the way it works around here.

Be nice.. and we will bend over backwards for all of you. Act like a dick and lie about stuff... and the Bazookas come out. Simple.

A cable tester is a great idea, but it might be more expensive than you expect. All of those Lemo connectors are surprisingly pricey!

Well, an audio cable tester with XLR and tone generators is $30, an network cable tester is $20 ... so I hope that the price isn't unreasonable.

Those are passive though. It could be that Red needs to do some active testing, perhaps passing signals through the cable and interpreting them ... that could raise the price.

What I expect is that a cheap passive tester can make sure its safe to attach a cable, and the camera/evf/drive/battery can do the rest functionally.

OK enough reasoning ... looking at prices on the Red store for cables ... my original suggested price is almost certainly too low. I always forget how much these cables are.

Maybe $500? Basically the price of two to five cables, depending on what you pick.

Well, an audio cable tester with XLR and tone generators is $30, an network cable tester is $20 ....

for just an EVF tester.. you are looking at $60 in wholesale cost for just the raw Lemo connectors alone :)

Yeesh.

Well that's part of what I want.

I really want a universal Red cable tester, so I promise to sit down before looking at the price. ;)

Cable tester - $250 (or whatever it ends up costing)
Peace of mind - priceless

I'll take one. I've had my camera and cables for a while now. And it could be put to use on any new stuff that comes along. :-)

Whoa - what make of cables are you using? I want to avoid those!!

...

Well, XLRs are only three wires, network a few more but no power. EVF cable is data and power, so not only continuity but also short circuit testing is required. And test needs to be continuous so that we can wiggle and bend the cable a bit while testing to check for intermittent issues or damaged insulation.

Wow, I just found this thread. Glad to see it looks under control now....

One good thing out of this thread though is the idea of a little field cable tester... I like that. Ill check with the engineers if its something we can do.

That would be a great addition to the kit! Would love one flexible enough that it could test cables to fit every port on the RED One, EPIC and Scarlet!

What you are basically saying is that somebody can invest several hundred thousand dollars into a camera package and if they piss you off
for whatever reason you will stop servicing their gear or selling parts.

I like it. I disown clients and customers who piss me off.... No law says I (or RED) has to take anyones' business or sell product or provide services to anyone.

You guys decided to take this out on this forum as much as he did.

Something he should've considered before.... Anyway, ignoring someone is rarely a good option, regardless of how they're acting. He was invited to contact them off-list to deal with the situation and he declined. His subsequent posts to the forum were not constructive, nor were they factually complete. Sure, he has a right to complain, that's not the issue here. He was not doing anyone a service, regardless of claiming to. There are thousands of RED cameras out there in the wild, many of them using EVFs every day with no such issue. He would have done far better to actually communicate with Brent and send in his cable (and possibly camera too) for testing to determine the actual cause of the issue. Instead of going completely upside down over the EVF repair bill and threatening in public. There's a chance that something else could have been uncovered to explain it all. Now we'll probably never know.

.....i had to clinch my teeth before hitting send...but i also don't hold back.....as you well know. I've probably made more lists than i care to think.......as long as my pic is not posted it must be ok.....

As for RED and what they do behind scenes.......i can attest that i've had 100% customer satisfaction with loaner cameras when a video board blew up and a touchscreen loaner when mine was not working---so i guess cursing is ok on this forum and i say fucking A to the red squad for backing up customers beyond call of duty.....That said....i'm sure i'll say something or rather do something out of line soon enough.....but count on it all being done from the gut......

Just a quick note to say that the only real issue I've ever had with our camera package (knock on wood) was when my RED Battery Charger stopped working the day before the warranty expired. I got a hold of Sean Ruggeri @ RED, sent it out that day, had it back a couple days later good as new, and RED footed the bill.

They will bend over backwards if you just explain things and work with them...

Our 3-year-old RED ONE MX is still shooting every week. Soon we'll be getting our Stage 2 EPIC X, and I could not be happier in my experience with the company or their products!

Let me get this straight.

You think that walking into a room of thousands of people whom will do anything for the room...

And your plan is to threaten RED?

Good luck.

Will you ever use your real name? Probably not.
