RED - A Look Back

Hey Ketch, let me see that picture where you and a couple of the guys are at film's funeral, standing over a celluloid reel being buried...hahaha one of my favorites

Our first time working with Vladimir Eugene's camera #89 in Fall 2007. A 6 to 6 night shoot in Red Hook with near constant rain. Daniel Sariano left, myself right.

I remember the first time I saw and touched Vladimir's RED ONe in front of my building when Vlad showed up looking for a Hex key that I thought I had; I had a vast array of every conceivable key and screwdriver imaginable (or so I thought), so I phoned Ian and told him I had that Hex key he was looking for. Sadly, it turned out that the one I had wasn't the right size, so I went with Vlad knocking at my Super's door to see if he had one, which he didn't. We then went down the block to see if the hardware store or jewelry store had it: no luck
Anyway, in the end the guys were able to work around the problem that day
Remember that Ian?

The 1st RED "Spec Day" was Dec. 13th, 2005. We had no sensor design and no industrial design. We got a small group together to talk about what exactly this camera should be. The "GO" decision was made within a few days of this meeting. So RED officially committed to building a camera in December of 2005.

A few months later we exhibited at NAB 2006 with mock-ups and took $1000 deposits thinking we could deliver by the end of the year. This was the beginning of "always late but worth the wait".

In March of 2007 we went to New Zealand to visit Peter Jackson with "Boris" and "Natasha", the very 1st RED ONEs. Peter and his team shot "Crossing the Line" in three days and delivered the files to us one day before NAB 2007 opened. The wait averaged just over an hour to see it at our booth and the line was packed from open to close of every day.

Steven Soderbergh saw "Crossing" and committed to shooting "Ché" on prototype RED ONEs beginning summer 2007... several months before actual production began.

It took until August 2007 to release the 1st cameras for sale.

THIS IS FOR THE HISTORY BOOKS

November 16th, 2006 - 4k Screening at Nuart Theater

hdforindies flashback report: http://www.hdforindies.com/2006/11/notes-from-la-red-screening.html

A day I'll never forget as it was the first time I had ever seen 4k projection.

I too was there. It was amazing. I had made my $1000 deposit just 17 days before and was kicking myself for not making it at NAB 2006. My friends and co-workers could not believe that I took this "gamble" on something that didn't even really "exist". Who's laughing now SUCKAHS!

When I took delivery in Feb 08 everyone wanted to shoot something ...... for free. We had some good times shooting all kinds of stuff. Our first real RED job was a commercial with AC Green of the Lakers for the "Christian Flower Network". And the rest is history. Some jobs big some jobs small but all shot on RED and in the HISTORY books!

I thought it might be a good idea to get some people together in April 2008 at NAB for a roundtable/party. Had no idea that it would grow to the event it has today, but there was quite a bit of energy in that first event. Mike Seymour did a great job getting it kicked off, Graeme Nattress made an appearance, and of course Ketch has his famous Tiramisu. I had just received my camera in February of that year as well. Great times!

Maybe the image I remember best from this forum´s history:

Posted by "Pig" in this hilarious/nightmarish thread: Red Cam destroyed

Oh yeah, I remember that. Ouch.

By the way, here's the original un-photoshopped picture RED released: :-)

That's "Crossing the line" I guess.

Nice ones.

Brings back all sorts of memories these images...

Actually - the title was correct, as those images of Peter Jackson were from a project he did for the Australian War Memorial called "Over the Front".

Notice, the name of the Camera being used... "Clifford". "Crossing the Line" was shot much earlier on RED prototypes "Boris" and "Natasha".

Still, great images of history in the making.

And a rather amusing appearance if I remember rightly. I was knackered after a day at NAB and I think some of my answers to questions were rather more terse than expected :-)

I think you did just fine under the circumstances. You probably didn't know what you were walking into. :-)

#87 Ian, not that it makes a difference:)
that is a great memory. I not only got to see Ian and Daniel do their magic. I was amazed how the NYC Redcommunity reached out to help when we had a problem.
First Jaadgy, as he mentioned, then Mark at Offhollywood thought he had the correct Allan wrench, I literally ran over there- No one had that small an allen wrench; Steve at Du-All ended up drilling out the small Allen, and the PL mount would twist once again.

NYC never felt more welcoming- Thanks for stepping up and offering a hand.

Yes, this was the first RED event I went to as well. I think Ted had just gotten back from IBC, and New York, and this was the first public screening on the west coast.

There was such excitement in the room. Amazing times.
