  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Red #88 For Sale - Portland, OR

I keep thinking of that show where common people take their old stuff to have appraisers figure out what it's worth. Someday in the future people will bring their RedOnes in and the auctioneer will look at it and say... "it's beautiful, was a turning point in digital cinema, and it's worth <some price>. Too bad you don't have the matching 'R', because then it might fetch as high as <some higher price>. But it's still a lovely piece of history by itself."

Seems like that's how the show always plays out... complete collections, limited edition stuff, that always makes things worth more money to collectors.
 
I will probably make a few enemies by making this statement...For some reason it just seems pretty creepy keeping this little memento "R" and not just letting it go to the actual new owner of it...Its like the cherry on a cake...Its a thought, a gesture, a symbol, an act of generosity, a token.

Is it really too much to ask for? resolution and finality, completion. Let it go and move on.

I have been toying with buying this #88 but the issue of the "R" as seemingly insignificant as it may appear on the surface tells me something that turns me off to the whole deal altogether.

Sorry if I hurt anyones feelings its not my intention I just had to speak my mind on this one.

D.D..., I am with you... Though, when it comes right down too it... nobody really cares about anything... Nothing means nothing.
 
I think that this whole amazing remarkable journey we are all a part of here gathering around this defiant act Promethian in proportion is perhaps an opportunity in more ways than may meet the eye at first...Isnt there an unwritten ethic at work here through the actions and deeds we have experienced every step of the way? I think we also have bonded strangly enough through this risk taking adventure...I believe Dan will do the right thing in the end...After all its not about a camera or an emblem its beyond that, they are mere expressions of a determining principle, a decision, a choice, and making actions that touch and move peoples lives...The amazing thing is that we all have that capacity in us its just being bold enough to exersize it...Sometimes the biggest gift is the the chance to be the one to give and be significant in another human being life...This is powerful stuff...Getting #88 is like being bestowed an honor Dan is passing it on hopefully to someone who has followed along and has some concept of what it means to have it to weild...A bit saga like but the fact is we are walking in the middle of a heated vision of raw passion...

So as i look into Zihuatanejo vacation packages, I thought I'd take a break and bring up my unsolicited predictions of Red a year from now. Since I've still got a pony in this race, it'll sound incredibly biased and self-serving, but I stand by them even after the auction's over. Here they are:

1) Red's going to raise their price, if only nominally. But they'll raise it nonetheless. And it'll still be a great deal. But...they'll honor current prices to reservation holders. Everyone's happy.

2) Red supply will not overflood the market next year and bring prices down below (current) retail. Yes, supply will increase, but so will demand as more people are sold on the camera/workflow. How many are taking a wait-and-see attitude? Those are the ones who will buy when the supply goes up (seeing it as an indication production issues/workflow have matured), so ramped up production will be accompanied by increased demand. And this is also on a more expensive product (see #1)

3) Warranties will be officially transferable - but you'll still need to pay the $500 fee to have Red check it out to make sure it hasn't been modded, addressing the concern Jannard wrote yesterday.

These are my own, largely uninformed opinions, so I defer in advance to those who actually know the economics of this industry.


Also, since I'm clearly making out pretty well on this auction, I've decided to donate 1% of the difference between the final price and retail to some charity. Yeah, it's only 1%, but hey, a hundred bucks is a hundred bucks, and it's just for fun anyway. And before any of you assholes jump in to bump up your post count with asinine comments like "scam!" and "sounds fishy!" - yes, I will post proof.

Any suggestions? Should be something in the film arts of course. Otherwise I'll put it into Portland somewhere, maybe the Northwest Film Center? It's got to be a nonprofit.

Oh, and this thread now has the most page views in the Jobs/Equipment For Hire forum. Can I get "member" status mods? C'mon, screw post count!

Hey Dan, this Albert from Corpus Christi. From the sounds of "I'm clearly making out pretty well on this auction," does that mean you're not looking at the rental idea anymore?

Sorry Albert, I just emailed you. Yes, I definitely am still interested, but I got a flood of rental offers this morning and am trying to sort through them. I'm racing against my own clock here!
