  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED 85MM Prime

Laguun, no CA on MP 65mm as you see, even in the corners.
Maybe mine is lucky one, you know for export they make extra efforts:-)
However bad bad vignetting.
I wander if it is OLPF doing it since under sharper angle, light beam bites more glass?

Andrew... you really have to stop jumping to conclusions... this was a quick setup. It was lit from one side only with a fill card on the other side. It is light falloff, not vignetting. Hopefully, no one was paying attention.

I think that's smart.

Although it's fun being a part of the testing with you guys. Maybe just make an effort to put that kind of stuff as a disclamer in the original post.

FWIW, I believe Andrew is commenting on the Master Prime 65mm lens, and not the Red 85mm lens. With that MP lens test moved to separate thread, it can get confusing.

I for one love that you guys get so excited about something that you throw pics up even if they haven't been produced in ideal situations. The enthusiasm is infectious.

No need for extreme measures :usd:

If the RED primes hold up against the competition, which I'm sure they will, then you won't have trouble selling them even if someone decides to do unscientific testing on unfinished products bases on different setups. In my book that's not valuable information I can use for anything anyway.

heh heh.. the charts were never conceived to be posted.. we just did a quick "throw em up and take a look", and we got so excited that they went from screen to post...

No excuses though, Ill try and find some time in the next couple days to do things properly.

Jim, you do not believe in your own success, with lenses.
Also you are very busy and sometimes, just sometimes, you read threads from the middle.

“FWIW, I believe Andrew is commenting on the Master Prime 65mm lens, and not the Red 85mm lens. With that MP lens test moved to separate thread, it can get confusing.“

Jabeale is right, I got disappointed with Zeiss Master Primes after seeing the Jarred chart shot.
I made these two tests 65mm and 16mm just to compare RED 85 with Zeiss 65.

I know Zeiss is in some disadvantage here since 85mm should always be a bit better than 65 but by very very narrow margin. I can test 75 or 100 MP I have here if need be.

As a matter of fact right after Jarred posted his RED 85mm test chart I reactivated my “put on hold” order for RED 18-85 that I prepaid one and half year ago.

Jim, you can check the time I put my order through.
Without testing the MPs on RED, I knew you beat them hands down. Yes, you beat them Jim.

To be fair to Zeiss, MPs were never made for RED camera, they were made for the flat sensor or film. Also no Zeiss rep was present during the test so we know what these tests are all like.
Anyway, I do test things mostly for myself and for few friends I have here on RED forum, say 3500 or so.

Vignetting I referred to is very visible on Master Prime test, not the RED 85mm, I tested MP 16mm one and vignetting on 16mm master Prime is there as well, bit less though. I asked them to investigate, why we have this vignetting there.

Maybe it is normal when you shoot flat white surface and then you stretch the histogram, to see vignetting, though I didn’t stretch it, just converted it to 8 bit for jpg in PS from 16 bit TIFF.
Well T1.3 is not T2.5 as well but let’s wait for some more tests by other people.

For me MPs at 15.7K Euros for one and RED at 2.5K Euros (12.6K for 5 RED Primes) is clear choice.

And again, the full test is here:
