  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED 85MM Prime

that texture is actually on the crooked chart :)

You have got to be kidding me. Ok, after all Jim's hyperbole about build 16, etc. I thought that whatever it ended up being in reality, it could not possibly live up to the hype. But I have to confess, this lives up to it, and then some. Looking forward to further examples!

To compare it I did one fast NON-SCIENTIFIC test right now with Leica Summicron M 90mm f2 @ 5.6 on Canon 40D (using Leica Visoflex to Nikon F then to Canon EF adapter!!!).

This Leica lens is a vintage and also old about 25 years.

I'd love to see a chart shot wide open. How many lines per millimeter is the lens resolving, and at what stop does it "snap in" to that resolution? What about the other primes?

Oh fuck yes! Thats some tight canned jewelery.

The 85 has always been my favorite focal length in 35mm photography, it has the right balance of everything.

How does the sharpness of the primes compare to the new zoom?

I don't fully understand everything here, but I'm glad everyone's so excited!

I feel like Steve Carrell in Anchorman (when he doesn't understand what everyone's yelling about--"Loud noises!")--Excitement! Happy! :)

I just spent $20K.

Me too... Looks like I can stop searching for that elusive $20K set of zeiss primes that don't seem to exist.

Will I be able to put my hands on an 85mm or any of the other new primes at NAB? I want to touch them.

We will have a couple of lenses "to touch" at NAB. Just wipe the taco grease off your grubby fingers 1st!

Jim

wow - just pulled that tiff into shake and had a very close-up look - minimal CA at the edges - really looks like a hi-res scan! well done guys!!!

Jarred, I'm wondering physically are the iris and focus rings smooth and rock solid - does it feel good? -

the image is sharp, do the ergonomics match?

I'll speak for Jarred and everyone else at RED that has touched these lenses... they are fully professional quality in every way, especially mechanically. At least as good as the 300mm. Most here think better.

Jim

Okay, so I'm on the lesser end of the knowledge pool in regards to knowing what makes a great lense.

I understand primes are better than zooms due to being (a) faster, (b) having less breathing on rack focus (sometimes).

Are those the only two reasons these primes will be better than the 18-50mm zoom? I think there are more reasons. Can someone articulate them for me? How else are they better?

The mechanical precision and robustness is much better as well. Resolution difference is significant.

Jim

Easier to focus with is what you're saying?

Hmm, how then does the 18-85mm compare with the primes, besides the obvious T stop difference?

The 18-85mm will compare favorably with any zoom made by any company in the industry, both mechanically and optically. It is big... just under 10 pounds. But it is bullet-proof. It is my favorite lens of all time. Jarred's too. I own over 500 lenses, this one is the absolute best one.

We'll post resolution charts from our primes and the new zoom. The zoom is just under the primes for resolution, as expected. But since it is a digital design, it out-performs most every expensive zoom that was designed for film. That includes lenses that sell for over $45K.
