  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED 85MM Prime

But since it is a digital design, it out-performs most every expensive zoom that was designed for film. That includes lenses that sell for over $45K.

Jim

"That's a bold statement!"

Shawn, primes are great because they do one thing and do that one thing very well. A zoom, even a very very good one is always a compromise in some aspect, even if it's just weight. Also you have a limit on how fast a zoom lens can reasonably be, T2.8 is pretty much it for 35mm optics. Even at that speed the 18-85 is 10Lbs. In other words no hand-holding for us non governators. Primes can be fast, sharp, extremely well corrected and still be manageable in size and weight (Except Master Primes).

Jim does this mean you'll give me good deal on your busted old S4s:huh:

Ahh, Jim. Kudos! I love how you directly answer everyone's questions. You're so knowledgeable and humble to be down here answering our questions. One heck of a leader.

I think we will buy them as well. But i will wait until we can see the bokeh, feel the mechanic performance and talk with some of the DPs here if they can live without T1.2,1.3,1.4 (we still would have the Zeiss here for that, but i can confirm to anyone that the Zeiss -arent- as sharp as the reds in the corner, no matter if T1.3 or T5, and they are our red prime lens defaut, i am certainly not biased against them).

But: the price/performace of reds set is simply -AWESOME-. If someone doesnt have a prime set, it seems (we have to wait until NAB if everyone is a satisfied with the mechanics/ergonomics etc, but i think red made it very clear that they will be great) this is the #1 choice.

The sharpness of the lenses is -outstanding-. Our testshots with Arri Masterprimes were less sharp, thats for sure.

BTW: Single lenses/cherrypicking. If you could sell them solo at a -much- higher price (5-6K each), it would be great. Doing rental for many years, i can tell you that some lenses see more use (35/50), others will be scratched faster (the wider the more they will be hit against something, especially when the mattebox/filters have removed to take this very very very close up of a martial arts fight or a remote controlled miniature cars (i am speaking real cases here)) and i always prefer to have a backup of these in the house for rental. I for sure would be willing to pay the premium for solo lenses.

Everyone here at the company looking at the images today was flabbergasted. In 3 hours i will have a meeting for a fullfeature which was planed on cookes s4 this summer, and will show the dp the shots in comparision... lets see how he reacts :)

jochen, if you get yours early, would you like a short trip to berlin? the red users here would *certainly* welcome you and offer female dancers and would seat you on flowers.

That's sure is some nice chart shooting sheriff Jarred... but 5.6 is strictly for kids. How's it look WFO ?

65mm Zeiss Master Prime on RED #906

65mm Zeiss Master Prime on RED #906

It is 1:1 crop of right lower corner.
No CA noticeable. Pretty strong vignetting.
Setup:
http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?t=11432

Firmware V 13
Setting:
Aperture T1.3
Shutter 1/48
Distance to chart 3315mm (3.315M)
No sharpening, applied

This test I did to compare RED 85 with MP 65.
So this gives us 1200 horizontal lines pairs resolution per whole 4096 pixel frame length, in the corner, not in the middle.
It mean that Mysterium without any sharpening with OLPF filter applied at full force as a whole camera plus REDCINE conversion to TIFF gives us 2400 easy recognizable lines (points) on the horizontal length of 4096 pixels. Not bad indeed. I will sharpen this TIFF and see what we get, tomorrow.

Would you offer me flowers and seat me on.....?

Jochen

100%.

we would paint them in a color of your choice and warm them up to your preferred temperature if you want.

Laguun, no CA on MP 65mm as you see, even in the corners.
Maybe mine is lucky one, you know for export they make extra efforts:-)
However bad bad vignetting.
I wander if it is OLPF doing it since under sharper angle, light beam bites more glass?
