  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED 7" monitor touch screen problems?

Were these issues resolved with updated firmware? I'm looking into buying a cabled/DSMC 1.0 version of the 7" touch.

Also, are the cableless and cabled versions the exact same, or is RED using slightly newer bits and pieces for the cableless version? The original 7" Touch came out in Oct 2014 or so, that's why I ask.

It's not about software, these were hardware issues (one of my 7 inch monitors got back from RED with a new panel installed), whether they got resolved in the newer batches remains to be seen.

Right out of the box, my 7" touch is flickering and flashing horizontal blue lines.

Demetri are you using DSMC 1 or 2 of the 7" LCD? I bought a DSMC2 7" LCD which hasn't been shipped yet but now I am worried about this issue

The original one, Jason. I'm thinking about the DSMC2 version for my future Scarlet-W since I've just realized that 4.7" is the exact same diagonal as my iPhone 6s and this is just not enough.

The only way to know if the DSMC2 version is problem free now is to just wait and listen what people who got it say.

Same here, it was 3 months old... touch screen died. Replaced by warranty after 3 weeks, 10 months later (Today that is) same issue... Happens without any warning or any reason. Thinking of getting 5" and a bigger one for monitoring.

RED TOUCH PRO 7" EPIC DRAGON

I wish someone from RED would chime in with some kind of an official statement about these 7 inch LCDs issues.

This is a $3000 product, at this price point it shouldn't have problems like these.

So what's up with the 7 inch? Bad panels? Bad wiring? Who's responsible? Is it present on DSMC1 7 inch LCDs only, or DSMC2 ones are affected too? Please don't keep us in the dark guys... I'm thinking about getting a DSMC2 version, but very hesitant considering issues me and other people in this thread experienced.

Hi all,

Please try upgrading your cameras to firmware build v.6.2.55 and set your LCD refresh rate to 30hz to see if this relieves the issues you're experiencing. The 30hz option was added as a in-field fix for an LCD reported issue.

Once you have tested with the new firmware build, please PM me with the results so I can help troubleshoot further.

thanks for your reply, this issue was a hardware issue and the was replaced at pinewood. Shall i still try? I will need to take a 2 hour drive to another town tomorrow in order to use someone elses 5" so i can even install the firmware and change the settings. (No redmote here)

The glass on my 7" got all scratched up very easily after a week of use.. as opposed to my old battle tested 5" red monitor with not a single scratche.

So, after a 2 hour drive to another studio, managed to get into settings with REDMOTE, upgraded firmware, switched to 30hz, obviously the touch is not working altho deep inside had that little tiny hope that it would.
Booked a courier for the monitor to be shipped to UK from CYPRUS, looks like a warranty case (lets see).

I don't know if this helps, but my 7'' monitor was freezing, so I sent camera logs to RED, and they recalled my WEAPON. got it fixed up and turned around fast. no issues since....

camera logs are your friend. The more of these you can send to RED for analysis, the faster they can squash bugs.

I did send the logs, they've requested the Display to be sent to them.
Tested on other brain, same thing...

Brand new, just got mine today. Doesn't respond to touch, turns on and off, changes settings on it ls own. Switch back to my 5inch it's all good. There's some serious quality control issues with these.

Mine seems to be a dud as well. I get some massive distortion when I put a fresh battery on the camera. After about 5 minutes of use, the problem seems to go away but alas, time for my 6th or 7th RMA with RED. The journey hasn't exactly been smooth over the years (I totally baby my equipment by the way).

Guys check the power source.

The 7" is really sensitive to the DC source and if the battery isn't able to give the cam (an so the monitor) enough amps,

it has problem to the touch and signal/backlight.

Tearing is fw related and distortions could be too.

Just hoping you didn't get a bad unit that's all. ;)

I've got the opposite problem. Seems like the signal gets all wonky with fresh batteries then the problem goes away after 5 minutes. RED wants me to send the camera back too, which is a pain in the ass since I don't have any problems when using a 5" Touch LCD.

Ditto to all the above in this thread.

My 7" display has not worked since the day I bought it. Depending on the day it has static, diagonal tearing, and/or just straight up non-responsiveness. I have sent it (and the Dragon body) in to RED three times now and have received a different excuse each time. If memory serves, I believe the first time they said it was a "bad board" in the camera that they supposedly replaced. The problems persisted. The second time they said it would be fixed by "updating the firmware". (As if I hadn't already done that. Come on.) The problems persisted. The third time they finally just admitted they didn't know what the problem is and sent a brand new monitor back. Surprise: the problems persisted.

Completely unimpressed and frustrated with RED. Can't believe they can got away with selling a 30+ grand camera that didn't work from day one. Can you imagine buying a 30 grand car that broke down before it even got off the lot and the company does nothing? Even the employees at the RED store in NYC are super apologetic/embarrassed and like, "Yeah, you got totally screwed."
