I recently got a 16GB RED CF Card as a gift from a DIT based out in New York and for whatever reason the 16GB card will not mount to my RED ONE. I mentioned it to him and he said that the card had not been used in 7 years and something called a "Firmware Flash" might have to be done but he was not sure. Any suggestions on how I can get this card to work with my camera? I tried formatting but again, the camera does not see the media so when i format it says nothing is there. He gave me an 8GB card and that one works fine. Thanks :)

Does your computer see the card?

Yes it does and it still has footage on it from the previous owner

PM'ed you.

The fact you can read off the card would indicate the card itself is fine.

Format the card as FAT32 with your computer or someone else's Windows PC, then reformat the card in the camera.

What Eric says. As the camera sees other cards, your reader on your camera sounds ok.
(I remember there was an issue with people bending CF pins inside them.

Looks like you probably ended up with an Offhollywood CF card. :-)

Because the card has footage from previous camera build you need to format it first on a computer and then it will probably be able to be formatted on the camera itself moving forward.

I tried formating the card as you guys said.. the format completed fine but the camera still will not read the card.

Did you format as FAT32? That's the only file system the camera will recognise, other than its own.

FAT32 is its own... isn't it?

I believe it's a tweaked Red variant of FAT32 optimised for continuous write speed - but can't remember where I heard/read that.

Also Mike, check you can WRITE to the card from the computer, as well as Read.

Yes i can read and write from my computer. I formatted to the format you guys said, granted i did it from a mac so its labeled MOS-DOS (FAT). I do not have access to a windows pc.

On a Mac, you also need to select "Options" & select "Master Boot Record" as the partition scheme ((as opposed to the default GUID Partition Table) in Disk Utility before formatting MS-DOS(FAT) as a single partition.

The master boot setting was correct, i've done all that you guys have suggested and still, my red will not read the card. Anything else you guys can think of? What was this "firmware flash" option the first owner spoke of? Thanks for all your patience and help with this, it really means alot.

So: Card is seen, is read/writeable from computer and DSLR (which could be a warning flag as many has said the RED 16GB cards won't work on a DSLR.)

I guess there could be some firmware hack on the card.
Does the card have a serial?

Oh, i should have noted that the DSLR attempt was one thing i could not try as the only camera i own is my RED ONE. Everything else I have been able to try that you guys have suggested.

If you can WRITE files to it from your Mac, I think you've exhausted all the DIY options, except the FAT32 MBR format on a Windows PC, which has sometimes worked on Red Drives with similar problems when formatting on a Mac has failed.

Surely at least one of your friends has a Windows PC?

Otherwise, send it to Red for evaluation/reflash.
