Hey guys I'm curious to hear about redusers experiences and/or solutions when recording audio directly into RED DSMC2 cameras?

When I owned several DSMC cameras I would attach lavs and shotguns into an A-Box and then the A-Box into the body. The sound quality was pretty good. I've tried this same thing, except with the DSMC2 V-LOCK I/O EXPANDER but the audio wasn't really solid. I've looked at alternative options such as the Off Hollywood OMOD XLR and I'm curious to see if anyone owns one or has tried something else and has experienced a great result?

Please let me know! Thanks!!

I use the v lcok io and get great results, just dont use crappy audio gear in front of it

I initially planned to buy the Omod XLR as well until I read about the QC issues and the biggest drawback of only listening to playback audio through SDI and not the headphone jack.

The next thing I looked at was tilta cage, but it was taking too long to ship and I didn't want to deal with having to ship it far away if something went wrong.

The solution I decided to go with was getting a MixPre-D and attaching it to the camera. As I did more research on it, I noticed the mixpre 3 and 6 just came out. I decided to get the 3, but only ended up finding the 6 for sale.

I quite happy going this direction. The Preamps are quite good. I can record more than two channels. I send the audio to the camera and record a backup on mixpre. I can easily just not attach it to the camera when there's a sound recordist on set. It's very compact and I don't exclusively have to use it with the red camera.

The only drawbacks are that you have to press record twice (on camera and mixpre), you need a seperate TC box to sync them together.

Right now I'm running on nimhs. It will last a couple of hours. I'm going to wait for a dtap to usb-c adapter to come out and power it through that.

Hey Joel, Sorry I didn't post a full setup photo, but I have the Base Expander with the Element Technica V-Mount (I like it because it has 2x 2pin Lemo Power, plust Dtap). Stereo out of the Mixpre6 into the mic input on the base expander. Set gain all the way down on Red.

I use a smallrig 15mm LWS baseplate, and I purchased an additional 15mm LWS mount and put it on the back of the baseplate. Still leaves room for Air to exhaust out.

I've attached a wireless lav to the v-lock and got pretty bad results. I'm wondering if it's the module or the a-box..

1. V-lock expander
2. Mozegear mini-papi (built specifically for RED)
3. I use a Sony Mic, rycote blimp, cut the lows.
4. Best audio ever for Run and gun
5. Man, I miss my DSMC1.

We have 2 Epic-W upgrades coming our way and have struggled with this, too. The good news is Mark from OffHollywood posted somewhere that the OMOD XLR issues are being fixed so you can play back through the headphones. Hopefully they also get levels up a bit as a lot of people have complained about them being very low.

Can you post a picture of how you set that up on your DSMC2?

Which Sony mic?

Absolutely. I am out of town at the moment, but we are currently filming our run and gun setup. A few people and companies we work for want us to throw a video up for them. I was just over at the discussion on hoods too, and we are in the process of making one that actually works. The prototype is here on our epic dragon. I will throw the link up asap for the new series. Basically works the same way I have here but you are running the mozegear mini papi that has phonyom power and is the best small preamp I have ever dealt with. Runs for 545.00 though. Scroll through those let me know if they work. Wasn't quite sure why it's so hard to put pics up here.

Let me know

Sony ECM mic is the best mic I have ever used for dialogue on run and gun. We are able to cut the low frequency off (which you will have to do in post anyways) and it doesn't pick up bass at all on strong gusts or camera jerks. However the mini papi allows you to cut the bass out too. After that, anything can be fixed on izotopes rx6 in post.

That's a WC shoulder mount with the small arms so I can run low if I need. Ronin baseplate attached on camera with small rig (thin quick release baseplate) which is attached to a WC quick release in case we have to move to ronin or tripod. The ronin baseplate with rods holds the red rock micro wireless follow focus. The thumb control is attached so we can use it on our shoulder or on the side handle we attached out the side of the shoulder mount to keep level. Monitor goes on the left side of shoulder mount (with NATO rails for quick release to ronin or tripod). Camera goes on right so it's balanced with the side handle when we run. We use a ton of FOTYRIG stuff cause it's cheap and good quality and I have to put that plug in cause they sponsor us...hahaha.

I would not get the OMOD's. They fail to tell you that you need another monitor to playback audio on it. I asked what monitor, and he directed me towards a 5,000.00 monitor. What was funny is that all the other expensive modules they have can playback audio, but the one specifically for audio, that is the cheapest one...requires the external monitor. Mozegear mini papi goes right into your expander jack and attaches to your camera depending on what model. Also, the mini papi lite comes out next month which is a smaller and cheaper alternative I believe.

Chad, thanks for showing me that, I didn't know they upgraded that. The only issue I see with that is the price tag and bulkiness. You still have to have a module for power attached which starts weighing the camera down and making it completely unmanageable on a ronin. With the mozegear I can keep it on when switching to anything, and the mozegear has level control, phantom power, and limiters. You're looking at a price difference of 2500 vs. 3500 plus between the 2. I do not work for Mozegear either guys. I also don't wanna step on anyone's toes who have already purchased the OMOD. I shoot strictly run and gun all over and pack one pelican with everything, and try to capture the best quality I can with the smallest setup. If you do studio work or something else, I would say the OMOD is probably a great product with the upgrade.

Jeremy, that sounds like a great solution for a smaller build. We have 2 cameras and we usually one built out for larger, interview-based shoots and then one smaller for Ronin, handheld, etc. The OMOD look so much better to us than the RED solution as RED's has a place for the older Red Volt batteries, which we don't use and seems like a lot of wasted space. The OMOD is also cheaper and we love the idea of having volume knobs on the side, since we often run a lav and shotgun directly into our camera. I hope they get the issues worked out on the OMOD as it looks like a great solution. I'm going to look into the Papi series for our smaller rig.

Thanks.

module for power? whatever battery plate you have on it should have a couple dtaps. What are you looking to power?
