I'm a first time user (editing with Red) and I'm going to edit a short film in Final Cut Pro 7 on a Mac Pro (quad core).

I'm going make an offline edit using ProRess files of the original Red Files, which I rendered using Red Rushes.(The ProRess files I've stored in new
folders, per shooting day.)

My question is about how I can reconform the quickest and best way to an online edit when I've finished editing, at 2K resolution. I've had some advice about exporting the sequence as a XML file and that I should work with Clipfinder to relink to the original files. And then import the XML in Final Cut and export it to Color for grading. I've already installed Clipfinder 2.2, but I can't figure it out.

Do I have to relink each shot individually, because each shot has his own folder with the original file and proxies? Or is there another way? And are there mistakes first time users often make in the process of reconforming that I should be aware of?

I love Clipfinder 2.5 is AWESOME.

Sounds like you may want to try this workflow.

R3D transcoded in RedRushes into QT ProRes whatever you choose
Edit that in FCP
Send your FCP EDL as an XML to Clipfinder 2.5 im not sure what 2.2 supports but may work for you.
Clipfinder will take that XML you tell it to Replace the MOVs to R3Ds
Send that Clipfinder list to REDCINE X right now REDCINE X seems to be the best with REDRocket if you have access if you dont and if your anywhere near LA give me a ring ill be happy to give you a hand.
Then 1light Grade in RedCine X export out to whatever you desire.
ProRes 4444 or HQ or what ever you want.
In Clipfinder Run Conform on FCP XML file
Import that XML in FCP and your files should be there with the 1light color grade.

There is a wonderful tutorial on a website that Slips my mind unfortunately but they charge a reasonable 3 bucks and its very worth it. Thats not very helpful but maybe someone can send ya a link and that link and tutorial should help you out LOTS.
They walk you threw it step by step.

hope that helps.

Thanks for the help Luis.

So it doesn't matter that the Red files are in different folders when you are going to change to MOVs to R3Ds? As long as the ProRess file has the same name as the original R3D, Clipfinder will find them? Or does it still require me to manually replace each MOV to a R3D?

Does this method work with other color correction programs, like Color and Scratch?
Or does this require another approach? The director of photography of the movie is also going to grade the film using a Scratch editsuite, and he doesn't want to lose any color info in the process. The online edit will also be made using Scratch I believe, and I would like to make and deliver my offline edit the best way possible for reconforming.

I live in the Netherlands by the way, where I'm a graduate student Audiovisual Media at the Utrecht School of Arts.

As long as your prores have the same name as your proxies (minus the _P,_M,_H, or _F) you just point clipfinder to the parent folder(s) of your .rdc's and it will find everything.

YES that tutorial is very helpful.
Fun to put a face to the voice and help.
Gorkum just do it. Youll be very happy in the end.

GREAT site overall.
Thanks for that one Luca
