  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Recap January 22, 2011...

Thanks Jim! These sorts of updates are very helpful.

Can you say if you think you'll be shipping first batch (that'll include #27 :-) by end of February as planned?

man i thought i was going to have more time to save up! looking to get a Scarlet for personal art projects and short films. will there be financing options for any of these cameras?!

I live in the US almost 10 years (Boston), and have never been in Vegas. I guess April is the prefect time to go, right?

Great news for the RED Community! Makes me smile.

This is a really good idea..

Hey Jared,

I would also like to do this for Fixed but don't want to loose out on any package pricing. Can you tell me how this will work? Will the package come with CF or SSD? If CF, can I buy the SSD gear now and then take the difference off? Should I even worry about it right now (sorry, kinda pumped about this dang camera)?

Epic is ready for primetime. Some tweaks here and there for sure, but for the most part, it's stable and looks amazing. People need to see the footage projected. That's when it really sinks in.

Someone asked about comparing R1 M-X to Epic. I was shooting alongside the Epic with my R1 the other night and feel there is no doubt that Epic is a notch above the R1 in many categories. There are the obvious ones. Resolution, less compression, HDR, higher quality slow motion, better processing, etc. But I think there are many other features that may fly under the radar at first but will probably become very important to people in everyday use of the camera. Some of these are major improvements over the R1.

Having said that, R1 M-X held its own and confirms for me what a force it still is. If people are unable to upgrade to an Epic for financial reasons, etc. rest assured that your M-X will shoot very good images moving forward until ready for an Epic. Epic will win a shootout if you compare the cameras side by side with identical lenses but it won't be a blowout. Epic will just win comfortably. :-)

Steve

Anymore behind the scenes stuff? ;-)

Ok so this is a question for Jim
epic-m. 35k - s35 5k 120fps
Epic-x. 28k - s35 5k 120fps
Epic-s. 12k - s35 5k 30fps, 4k 120fps

Scarlet. 8k - 2/3 3k 120fps

Is that right?

The EPIC M is $58k with the same specs as an EPIC X. Jim stated that there would be a limited number of EPIC M produced. I don't think there was any confirmation that after EPIC X starts production that EPIC M will still be available.

EPIC M where available based on existing RED customer numbers and I believe you currently cannot order an EPIC M - I stand corrected if I am wrong.

Of course all that is subject to change as per REDs conditions!

See this thread for the details on EPIC M

EPIC M was short run, given to selected customers even if a 100 signed up maybe only 50 get in (not exact numbers) so when X goes on production your right that M won't be around
the 58K is for the machining and the extra bits that are coming with it, I think 4xSSDs and stuff so it's worth it no doubt especially since its hand machined, maybe one day will be a collectors item?

X is meant to start short run production Feb time followed by ramp up into April,

All this from a couple threads in recon

X is machined with aluminum or something special? hence the X and then the normal ones are in a different material, i think they have a specific black coating too to tell them apart? not sure since this could've changed since original announcement

thx Steve
i'm a stage 4, so my interest are both for the X and S
specially the fps

ps : you guys make are amazing

No problems Richard.

We are a stage 4 too but we are going for the EPIC X! I was looking at the S but we've decided to go with X now.

:-)

Deliveries of EPIC-X to all existing customers by summer 2011.
May I ask what's your definition of "summer"?

I've noticed that folks in different countries tend to have different ideas what months "summer" refers to. For example, over here most people think "summer" means June and July. Some might include May and August as well, but September falls definitely under "Autumn".

i will order SSDs and redstations now, will be a huge demand for them and want them ready with Epic.

This is a really good idea..

Hi Jarred,

That sounds a bit ominous. Is there a risk that we might get our Epic with no available media to shoot on at the same time? Is shooting to the old Red Raid still an option should that happen? I can't imagine how frustrating it would be to have the camera and not be able to use it!
Better head off to the Red Store right now I guess...

the secret

the secret

I think due to the timing.... the only logical guess for 'the secret' is that Steve Jobs has left Apple for good and is coming to RED....

of course he will be under Jim :)

Get well soon Steve!!
