This is a book by a filmmaker I know, Vince Rocca, and his well earned info on making a feature film. There are several great pitfalls indie filmmakers can fall into that we can learn from in this book. It doesn't hurt to have several interviews with THE Kevin Smith in it too..

I give this the highest recommendation of a book for people looking to make a feature because the wisdom therein worked my head into a frenzy...

Please tell me Vince has now actually made it and has a real million dollar deal. Otherwise that book would effectively be my current story and 1000 other people I know :-)

That said, either way, congrats to Vince for writing a book and getting Kevin Smith in on it!

Many people do share the same story. The only difference is I put it in black and white and included financials, so newbs can get an idea of what to expect and veterans can have something to compare to.

I know a 100 filmmakers and 99 fibbers. If more had been truthful with with us all then maybe you wouldn't be in the same place as a thousand other filmmakers.

I also wrote it in a compelling and entertaining way, but that's besides the point.

I've seen kisses and caroms, and after watching it my first thought was, "someone probably bought this supercheap and then turned around made a (comparatively) huge load of money off of it.'

So, Vince, did you at least make enough to make another movie?

I dig that man! is your book going up on Amazon?

I hope you get the success you've been fighting hard for

So, Vince, did you at least make enough to make another movie?
Yes, but not at the budget I'd like to be at. I'm hoping I can add the book profits to the bottom line and get a really nice budget together to do the next.

Another way of profiting, is that I can lay claim that I made a movie in 5 days for $11,000 that got the interest of National Lampoon and went out through Warner Bros where it made over $1mil and cracked IMDb's top 60 list. Hopefully that can convince investors and thus could be "ancillary" profits of K&C.

is your book going up on Amazon?
Yes, but I make more dough if you get it from CreateSpace
BUT
If you prefer here's Amazon

Hey that's my book ;-)

If anyone has any questions, I'd be happy to answer them.

Hi Vince, would a European filmmaker get as much out of this book as an American? I've read a bunch of filmbooks, and half of them only apply to the American audience, or rather the American film system.

Best,
Jesper

Thanks to those who have purchased the book. I'm one step closer to my next flick.

Hi Vince, would a European filmmaker get as much out of this book as an American?
Good question and I'd be lying if I definitively answered YES. Since I'm not, nor have I ever been a filmmaker from that side of the pond, I'm not sure what differences and challenges you face.

Do these books translate to the European filmmaker
The Writers Journey
Down and Dirty Pictures
Rebel without a Crew
Spike Mike Reloaded

I can say the overall theme of Rebel without a Deal is Davey .vs Goliath or the little engine that could.

You'll experience production from pre-pre all the way to post. I assume that is the same for all filmmakers. You discover how I found distributors, the way I interacted with them and what the results were. I talk about AFM and what sales and dollars we made from various territories. I assume that translates too. You'll see my actual financial statements and discover how the squeaky wheel (NOT SCREAMING) got paid. In the midst of this, hopefully you find compassion for my journey through depression and with any luck this prepares you and keeps you from getting depressed yourself.

Plus Kevin is entertaining, insightful and inspirational.

So does that translate? Or what is different on that side of the pond?

Thanks for being honest. The Writers Journey does (one of my favorites along with Story), Rebel without a Crew to a certain degree, since the actual filmmaking doesn't have much to do with Hollywood. I haven't read the two others yet. But Kevin is always good, so I guess I might look into this very soon.

I see you have a Kindle version. Looks like I have something to read on my flight now :)

Kevin is great..but Vince..you're not so bad yourself.

Book is great..no other one like it out there..so it deserves a bump.

But it's a surprise to know you got a $10,000 movie to
gross 1 million...and your next flick funding is still a struggle.
Aren't there people out there who will get you $500,000 budget.

My kind-of review:
I was kind of down on making my movie. My DP is a full fledged film school grad (and an awesome DP!) and is insisting on doing it 'right'... what a monumental task!
Then, reading this book, made me realize that I CAN do it! I can get this done!
It was my story almost exactly (except the porn videos part - trade those for educational videos). I'm right at the production phase now and am invigorated with new found hope. Now if I can just find a Kevin Smith-type around here...
Thanks for writing about your experiences!
Worth every penny and more.

Oh ya, and I rented Kisses and Caroms from Netflix too. No review on that yet as I can't get past the first 5 minutes without getting sleepy for some reason... :Drogar-Smoke(DBG):

Vince, do you own a RED? Perhaps that's in the book, which I hope to check out. Sounds like a good read. Also, will add your film to my Netflix que.

Congrats on a number of levels, the book, the movie deal, and surviving depression (hopefully beating it for good).
