  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Ready, Aim... Fire.

Marvin was really awesome… supposed to be an living ‘allegory” of Douglas Adams himself… rather depressed genius with a “brain the size of a planet” mopping about trying to find something useful he could do…
Imagine being a genius and living in a time with time travel, where everything ever invented has been invented, then one night while your sleeping dreaming about being a manically depressed robot with a brain the size of a planet with rats crawling around in it, some rats crawl in through your ears into you plant sized brain and set up a colony. I have hard enough time keeping a straight face as a genius who can't get to do anything.

I thought the BBC TV version of Slartibardfast’s character was really good too.
It'e in the delivery, oh the delivery , poetic justice, poetic rhythm. The character had some zest from memory, but the whole show seemed like it was made by people who make English satire programs thinking they are trying to make something actually funny. I enjoyed the movie more, but wished it was more like the book, a funny remake of the series.

Something I'm really enjoying lately is an English series called Out Numbered, the stuff they those kids to come out with is brilliant, a must see. Great night last night, Enemy at the Gates was on, while I was on line.

I’m sure when Laurie is finished with House, that we get to see a few ‘take offs” with Rowan Atkinson and Steven Fry and the “others” for RED NOSE day I wager. I’m sure they have been planning this for years… It’s almost too easy but will be very funny I’m sure. By the time House is “done” Fonzie will be in orbit around an entire planet of sharks! (last series seems almost tolerable…)
Don't watch it now, local stations can't start on time, change times, repeats, and put the good shows back to back, so just rent now. Good way to encourage people to cable, rent or pirate, away from broadcast TV.

Maybe RED one day has a “brain” that’s like Marvin… (in moping tones) “oh do I have to really power up… (achhh!)…So predictable…”

Somebody could do an update to do that ;) , and offer it to them to film the next Hitch Hikers With.

My favorite British comedy series in the last decade has to be Big Train. You guys need to watch that. Now that-s top notch humor right there. Gives Python (yes I know, sacrilege!) a run for its money!

Upgrading to Dragon will certainly cost less than what you paid for the camera.

Jim

Tell us of this thou dragon beast champion Sir Jimith, how it bestus the competition. Does thy dragon have twin camera heads :-) Could thou dragon come with a newest slender camera option maybe?

Nup, no offence Sergio, don't find Monty Python that great, too often like that Hitch Hikers stuff, some nice, will have to keep an eye out for Big Train. The best way to improve Monty would have been to take John Cleese out, and replace python with him, put him in a cheap hotel with an equally annoying wife and an waiter from Barcelona, and get Edwina and Patsy to come and stay :-) .

Ready, Engage, Direct (or something more creative that starts with a 'D')

Sergio I will definitely check that out. Thanks for that!

I’ve been in the USA (this time round for seven years now) and REALLY miss British ‘Telly”.

British TV has to be the best in the world as the weather there is the absolute worst/ most miserable in the world… more or less.

My old man was production designer on Monty Python’s Meaning of Life.

A lot of the Python “crew” were pretty amazing on the whole (actually a lot more humor off set or never made it into the production), but the one that we absolutely loved to bits was Terry Jones. Very warm and very insightful guy… Absolutely love his history documentaries (specializing in the Medieval period) he has done since, and I really love his mathematical documentary story of 1. Wayne I think you would really dig “Story of 1”, check it out.

So what the hell does this have to do with RED… you might ask?

What was interesting with the first two python movies is that things were shot in a very hand held way… the Meaning of Life was their first big budget “studio” picture. Terry Gilliam also got to go on a bit of rampage which later reached a more complete expression in Baron Munchausen (one of the most expensive pictures ever made at that time or a really massive budget overrun… oooops…); Brazil is still I think one of his greatest masterpieces.

Like RED many fantastic ventures and groups start out small and keep going, and go from strength to strength. Passion and Persistence in equal measure is the key to all of this. Many young groups and film makers will be starting out with Scarlet-X and in a few years perhaps in some cases will be doing major things. It seems RED will be here for the long haul to see through some amazing things unfold and make all these things possible AND accessible.

Cheers,

Eric

RED could find a way to bottle their leader's passion and sell it as an accessory.

It gets misinterpreted, appears barely controllable, (the attempts to constrain it are entertaining), it causes a few snafus here and there, but is the main reason IMO his company has been a success story.

The fact it can't be bottled is perhaps a point of difference in RED's favour commercially.

Just because I speak my mind before I think about the consequences, then have a ton of people urgently and emphatically tell me I'd better delete my posts before we get sued... what was your point again? :-)

Jim

Your a Wildman...... some of the posts are gold......there must be a collection of them somewhere ; )

Unfortunately that is the price of being a "public figure" Personally when people complain about RED's machoism, it brings a smile to my face. I say keep it up! The world is not for the meek.

Eric, I could almost predict that was the movie you would say,

A lot of the Python “crew” were pretty amazing on the whole (actually a lot more humor off set or never made it into the production), but the one that we absolutely loved to bits was Terry Jones. Far out, I was watching one on infinity the other day, that was enough. ;) The counter intuitive thing is that zero didn't always exist, and I can imagine people scoofing as to why have zero as it didn't exist, as ignorant people often do about things beyond their understanding, and around here (That would make a great documentary, maybe he could do that too, and the next one on binary logic, then an one on analogue logic called infinity ;) ). I tell the truth about what can be done, and how it can be done so cheap, and they don't get it, but they know little past what they know, like a person walking around their backyard claiming they know the lay of the country side, as if they were a retired explorer. Wouldn't you agree?

The Python guys definitely had talent. One of my friends locally went to college with them, and knew John Petrie, friends with the guys from the goodies (now that was comedy) and even Billy Collony, grandson of the admiral in charge of Gallipoly for a while, a lord's son, you could see that energy in him, a real pain in the ass. Another of my friends used to be a famous English entertainer in the 50's, real Carry on type of humor (another pain in the ass, but lovable popular guy, but funny as), was on international news a few years ago for saying ho, ho). I'm a different type, that is why I am interested in doing comedy productions, apart from documentaries and science fiction. One of my friends, is also an up and coming comedian, so you never know what I might be able to get done,

About the UK, yes you can really dress up your characters in that weather, NZ offers similar advantages. I have thought about how good it would be to film in Tasmania. Maybe you should start a company in the UK. Would love to to live there myself, being meaning to contact Sir Clive again for years.

So what the hell does this have to do with RED… you might ask?
Yes, how dare we be so funny, we should be punished, by punished I mean somebody should be made an example of, by that I mean let's start with you (a mixture of English and American comedy styles ;) ).

Yes, Brazil was an interesting film, long time ago, was it a sort of 1984 anti type? Baron Munchausen was definitely something, can't remember it too well, but funny from memory.

Yes, I agree, that was going to be my point to, except for stunts, special effects and sets, comedies can be done rather cheaply. Given a sub $5k Scarlet camera in particular, small groups can afford to make things that can be transferred straight to screen if good, by passing iTunes and video stores. This may lead to alot of new talent cropping up, and also become a ready staple for theaters in the coming online streaming world, locking the good stuff into an exclusive cinema release before it hits iTunes etc. You see guys, there are many ways to slice a profitable cake.

Cheers,

Eric

Bye.

But it is for the gentle ;) .

Thanks Jim,

Will Dragon work in our Red Ones?
I would be completely floored if it did. Speechless really. But, totally understand if not.

Thanks again.

I'm wondering the same thing. Jim are our RED MX's going to be upgradeable to DRAGON?

That being said I recall Jim mentioning that those who kept their Red One's will be happy soon. It intriged me at the time. Red does seem to be the only camera company that is following the three R mantra. Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. The first two being the most important and most ignored. Essentially most cameras just get thrown out eventually. That hasn't happened with red yet.

I feel like I have to log in every 15 minutes or I'm missing something.
It's a new way of doing business. In the past, it seemed like I got plenty of attention from the camera manufacturer when I was ready to purchase, then when the purchase was made I never heard from them again.
This is different.
This is pretty damn cool.
