RDMs and Resolve

I know I read something related to this topic, but I cannot find it, so here we go:

If I use RedCine-X to modify the R3Ds and the grade changes are saved via RMD, will Resolve use THAT metadata as the foundation look from the R3D files? If so, are ALL parameters change saved at the RMD and, hence, be available to Resolve?

I posted on another thread that it will be great to have the Wave being "RedCine-X" cognitive if the Red tab is activated. If the answer to the above question is in the affirmative, that function will save us the trip to RedCine-X...

Any soul would care to confirm/explain this claim.? I believe it is possible; Adobe has proven to be possible with PP CS5. Just need confirmation and explanation of the mechanics since this would be AMAZING...!!!

Quick answer: What I recall from comments here on reduser, all parameters are being transported into Resolve except for curves. And then in Resolve you can choose whether you want to keep those settings or change them for one file or all files.

I have it running here and I'll do a test later to see if this is true.

So I did a little test and it seems that apart from Curves and Lift/Gamma/Gain, RMD settings are transported to Resolve. If you can live without those settings then yes, you can do a one-light in RedCine-X and continue grading in Resolve.

From Resolve's point of view, I guess it makes sense that you don't want to adjust too much before bringing footage into Resolve since that's where you are doing your grading after all and settings are much better managed in Resolve. On the other hand it would be nice to have a bit more control over RMD settings in Resolve, for instance I can't find any way to reload RMD files.

Just for reference: Premiere CS5 doesn't have settings for curves and Lift/Gamma/Gain in the editor as well, but it does display the footage with those settings applied.

Thanks a lot for taking this concern all the way to the test level !!! I agree that the RMD reloading is something that PPro does so well, and it is so useful... I will send an e-mail to the BM team to see what they can do about it (finger crossed)...

Now I feel much more confident, so I will try it here. I was being cautious due to a deadline, so I could not go and mess around with my grading of this feature. However, with these findings I will take a chance.

I may sound as a broken record, but I always have felt that RedCine-X is so under-appreciated and under-rated. It is a powerful tool that we owe very much owe to the fantastic Red team.

To be 100% honest, yes, Resolve gives you many other options, but I am not jumping up and down like a crazy about what I have gained, except the Power Grades/Power Windows. I feel that I was able to do so much with RedCine-X that I miss it. Anyways, my two previous features were graded 95% with it and the other 5% with Color, and the clients were very pleased with the results. I am still their first option since then...:blush:

However, now I am not going to miss it since I can still do all the first pass there (or even more), and use Resolve for the secondary and special details that only a software like it can give me.

I do not know what steps you took during the process, but the RMD information generated by Redcine-X (yes, I marked the auto save RMD) is not being transferred or understood by Resolve.

I can think of two areas that can contribute to this, for some reason that I do not know:

1. That such footage is part of a previously created Resolve project, and that it prevents to read new RMD information.

2. There is a setting on Resolve that has to be activated in order to allow Resolve to "re-load"/refresh the new information available.

Do you remember of selecting a particular parameter within Resolve to allow the information to be read? If no, I suspect that I would need to start a new project to confirm this theory.

Hi Luis,

I haven't found a way yet to reload the RMD data in Resolve. In fact when changing the RMD settings in RedCine, Resolve just kept hanging on to the old settings no matter if I restarted the project. Only when starting a new project it would load the new settings.

I don't know if there is a way to do it or if this is something we have to ask the Resolve team.

At least it is a good thing that it doesn't reload the RMD automatically, you don't want all your looks changed just because you were playing around in RedCine.

Did a test...

Resolve is the first RAW tool I have tested that properly moves the data out of the Rocket in a way that you don't lose a lot of info through not having the curve, you get the same result through using the luma/RGB curves within resolve as you get from RCX.

really dig this about Resolve!

Thanks, sorry if it was OT, but as I have seen the curves to be the way to gett full DR out of the files, and I have been very publicly sceptical to all software that doesn't include curves in the meta-room, I just wanted to come clear on Resolve... )

Just a hunch here, but from what I have seen so far, it is much easier/faster to set up the metadata in RCX...

If I was doing a first-light on a drama/film, I would still probably choose RCX for the task.

Many reasons for this, but rough matching of multiple clips etc comes to mind.

STorm may be up to it in a while, but that wish makes a lot of sense...

Looking forward to what comes out of this. Blackmagic has so far been very forthcoming and willing to listen to users so hopefully we get some more functionality in a next update.

I agree that making looks with RedCine first is a good way to get started, especially since since a Resolve system isn't always around or useful, like on the set.

Just thinking out loud: what would be really great is if Resolve could remember and manage RMD settings. Let's say you made a new look in the RMD file, you hit refresh in Resolve and then suddenly realize that's not what you wanted and you want to go back to the previous settings. Normally that would be impossible, but since Resolve already works from a database it could in theory remember all settings and name them Clip_001, Clip_002, etc.

Amen to both remarks:

1. BMD seems to be very open to hear what the users really need

2. The fact that Resolve is DB driven makes me at ease about going back to previous looks if we do not like the new one, we change our minds, or simply because we hit "refresh" by mistake.

I am excited with the fact that they are hearing and acting (remember how soon they enacted their support to RC/RG 2). Also, they have been gentlemen, and no indication of arrogance has been observed or felt by me throughout our message exchanges.
