  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Hi All,

I'm in the process of feeling my way through testing a new workflow, at least for me. I'm clearly missing something in the process and perhaps need to back up a step, or two.

I brought 4k footage into RCX for a one-light. Then imported the footage into FCPX and created a little edit without transcoding any of the footage although the FCPX project is in 2k....2048 X 1024. Fine so far.

Then I exported an XML from FCPX, and imported it into Resolve. I was surprised that the RCX one light held. I expected it to disappear from FCPX to Davinci. I was also surprised that the reframing of the 4k footage in a 2k project and speed changes that I made in FCPX held up in DR11 as well. Very encouraging.

Then I completed a basic grade, fine. The problem is when I render from Davinci, transcoding to ProRes 422(HQ), I'm not able to generate an XML from Davinci that matches the rendered filenames. The XML still reflects the filenames with .R3D as an extension, not the new files that have the .mov extension.

So when I render from Davinci then import the newly created XML file into FCPX, the timeline is recreated, I can see the clips in the timeline, but there's no media attached to those clips, thus I can't see the grades....just a black screen.

I would've thought that the new XML file would reflect the filenames that were just rendered. Clearly there's a concept I'm not grasping. Is it possible to generate an XML that reflects the new filenames, or have I missed a step in the workflow? I'd prefer to be working on the RAW files up to the point of grading.

Thanks for your insight...

Hi Kevin,

i run this same workflow all the time. I think what you might try is to right click on the timeline in the bin in resolve and export your XML from there. That XML should reference the new rendered media.

a couple of questions.

if you rendered an FCP x roundtrip preset in davinci, did you see if there was an XML generated in the folder with the rendered clips?

You could also try to import the XML from resolve and use fcp x relink command to point the project file to the rendered media.

Thanks for the response. I tried your suggestion with the same results. I generated the XML right clicking on the timeline in the Edit window. Still R3D files are referenced in the XML. To answer your question when I used the FCPX roundtrip setting there was an XML doc generated, but when I imported the XML in FCPX I got clips in the timeline but they weren't linked to anything.

I would think if you are rendering out new files/filenames, the accompanying XML would reference those filenames. Otherwise, what's the point? That's why I think I must be missing a setting or something.

I'll look into relinking in FCPX as you mention as well.

Here's a screenshot of metadata of the original media. I definitely was working from the original media in Davinci. Shouldn't I be able to reconnect the rendered media to a timeline in FCPX using XML fairly easily? I hope I haven't hit a roadblock.

Should be no problem at all.

Import the xml into FcP x

double click to open the project file and view it in the timeline.
In fcpx select the project file and then select file>relink media
relink all media
point to the folder where you rendered the files.
should now relink.

I do do this all the time and you can even render out individual shot fixes that update in FcP x automatically once they are linked.

Thanks David. Relinking pushed me along but I'm still running into a couple of problems. I created a video. Maybe you can spot where I'm going wrong. Thanks again for your help.

The timeline is recreated accurately when I import the XML. Then I relink the files but not all files are relinked for some reason. Some are just black. I must be missing a step somewhere along the line.

Try to select the clips that rendered as black in the timeline and use the relink command to relink those ones manually. First try one at a time then try groups.

Maybe I missed something in the posts but why are the files .mov from Resolve?

You can edit the R3D all the way back to FCPX from Resolve or maybe I missed why it had to be a .mov file?

Hi Kevin, I've had this issue before but I don't perfectly remember how I solved it. If you take a look at the timeline, the clips that don't show do not have an orange render line on top. If I'm not wrong it has to do something with opacity or an effect or something like that. When you are on top of a clip that does not show, try finding that clip in fcpx by clicking apple-f. You will then see that the clip is not black but indeed there. You could then replace the black clip in the timeline with the found clip. Also, try checking in the inspector window what is happening to the black clip in terms of effects, opacity settings. Eric Santiago, when you round trip from Resolve, you have to render the files from Resolve because all the powerwindows, tracking, colour grading, will not transfer back to FCPX. You must render out, and then export. Hope it helps!

Aah thats what I totally missed.

That part of my workflow is only after final edits (from my experience) and then I usually export to DPX or what ever flavor the client desires.

I tend to use R11 as a finish app :)

Edit: Of note, my apologies to this thread. Ive been in deep with a FCXP to R11 to Avid MC workflow that I got my crayons mixed up :)

I'm sure we all get our crayons mixed up! There is so much technology and different routes to everything, which is also cool cause we can each choose what works best for us. The great thing from reduser is that people are trying to help in whichever way they can, and so, I believe mixups are allowed!

well I had a few road blocks with my workflow and folks here, Creative Cow and BMD Forum got me somewhat over some humps :)

amazing cause back in the day, it was email or IRC.

I'm testing this more today and I think that the round tripping is definitely broken.

I go a bunch of weird sizing errors, etc. It is definitely the XML that is broken as the files are rendering to the correct size, etc, but the media back in FCP X from the RESOLVE generated sequence is completely out of whack.

Simple pretty much cuts only sequence.

I had this problem. What solved it for me was to rename the files at export from Davinci. Try that

I did a test yesterday with a few simple grades, power, scale and blanking.

It came over fine with 6 clips but they were renamed by R11.

Okay, I've managed to stumble my way back into FCPX and I got it working :) Thanks all for the input. Andreas, I think your on to what my problem was. I tried relinking each black clip but that didn't really grab hold. But then I tried to re-render each of the blacked out clips then reimport/relink, then place in the timeline. Worked for the first couple of clips. Then when I ran into clips with the same name....problems obviously. So I went back and re-rendered everything with unique file names. Bam, the XML was reconstructed in the new timeline.

So I must have rendered everything out without a unique filename and checking back on the video, that's exactly what I did. That must be why I didn't find any .mov references in the XML initially.

Ah well, solved.

Another note as well. It seems that the few speed changes that I initially applied in FCPX held together all the way back into FCPX, but were not rendered by Davinci. In other words the rendered clips do not show the speed changes....a good thing.

EDIT: Also of note, reframing 4k footage in the 2k FCPX timeline did not make the roundtrip. Also, when I set up a new 4k timeline in FCPX, sent it to Davinci, graded, then tried to render, Davinci would not allow me to render 4096 X 2048 (4k 2:1) footage for some reason. I had to go back into FCPX and go back to a 2k timeline then step through the process.

You mean, create unique filenames, of the media or create an XML with a new name?

Battistella

When you Comform from Davinci you can decide what file name they should have. If I have the same filename as before it often confuses them with the old Red Raw files when I export to final Cut Pro. So I call them now something like "Davinci_01". Then it works. Worth a shot
