March 17th is coming up. I for one am super excited to see Raven start rolling out. I have always thought as soon as this camera gets into the world things are going to change very very quickly. In the last few Years I would see Red cameras on Feature film sets, and SOME commercials. Mainly due to a small pool of people who know how to run them/work with the r3d in post. With time and the addition of a camera like the Raven, I feel like seeing a red is going to be a WHOLE lot more common, with crews on all sorts of projects figuring out a workflow for using RED.

Some worry about too many reds, thinking it will make things cheap. I think its going to open the flood gates for more and more work/projects, with more and more people who can be relied on to help support those ideas. How awesome is it going to be when we start getting young college kids on set as a PA or camera intern who know exactly how red works? I think its going to be a crazy summer, can't wait!

for all of you about to get a Raven weather its your first red or not, I am totally psyched for all of you, and for me cuz it means more potential relationships with more users!

I see your point, but I think it's a two edged sword.

Look at what happened when Sony made their log curves available to the masses. I have never seen so much shitty gray/green, contrast free footage flood YouTube in such a short time.

And it's certainly not the "Sony look" at fault, since these files should be flexible enough to do what you want with. Possibly with the exception of using a log curve designed for 10bit in a 8bit camera.

It's a good thing that RED offers Dragoncolor2 and REDgamma4 so that people can use this as an easy reference. Hopefully most Raven owners are a bit more educated to begin with.

Flip side: at the very least I hope a broader user base of RED will elevate what people expect the baseline of professional footage to be: intra frame compression, at least 10bit. It would be nice if the likes of Sony FS5 and Canon C100 would be 10bit going forward.

im personally very excited for my Raven to arrive as well as it to become a higher quality personally owned camera by many, i hope to see the decline of people shooting on substandard 8 bit or h264 dslr cameras. I have been using Red cameras since the beginning as a tool for the job. some of my favorite jobs were shot on the red one and still on my reel. Though for some of us that have different high end tools for each job, phantom, alexa, etc, it never made sense to own one of these cameras. which made the personal camera for us things the 5D and the BM pocket, basically low investment type tools. These were also cameras of choice of non-professional dps, like directors and upcoming shooters. With the Raven coming in at this price point allows people to dive in and have an actual professional standard tool for either a b-cam, low budget favor camera option or just for personal projects. I have shot so many, too many to count, personal projects on my 5d or pocket that i wish they were shot with a higher standard. i just had to watch a whole movie from a director that im going to work with in a few months on his second film, but his first was all on 5d, though the movie being great, the 5d just has that look of a dslr and just seems inferior to the standard. all i could think of watching it was if only he owned a raven! for me the math versus quality just made sense. i sold everything 5D and everything pocket and that more then paid for what im getting for raven, even selling off full frame lenses and buying more affordable aspc size lenses, like the the sigma 18-35.
anyway, i think it will be common place to at least be at this standard of quality, there is no excuse now!

Yes this puts me in the same boat. I was going to get a raven then decided on scarlet w but the point still remains that I did a lot of research on bit depth etc and every time I saw the next level of quality footage I knew I would not be happy with a DSLR. I kept looking up the food chain until I got to Red then I got the feeling this is the right brand and technology for me. I am really looking forward to my first Red camera.

I get on reduser EVERY DAY to check for more info. impatiently waiting for shipping

I wonder how many ravens they sold

More than this:

Unless you are Irish, no need to get overly excited. The first ones go out only to people living in Ireland and of Irish ancestry. At least, that's the word on the street.

As a Raven pre-orderer, I can confirm I am getting excited. It's subdued, however, because I placed my deposit in January. When it ships, it ships - I'm just happy to know it's eventually on its way.

I will also add that since last year I have been doing countless research, watching, listening, experiments, etc. etc. learning the RED workflow BEFORE it gets here. That kind of homework is fun homework. I like knowing any product I invest in - from soup to nuts.

Absolutely agree with you. RAVEN is going to open up a world of possibilities for people who had no real option other than DSLRs. RAVEN is more than just a more affordable camera. It's the beginning of a chapter for RED to energize a market they haven't touched yet. When the RED One was announced, it was a revolution. I think RAVEN is similar in caliber. Having access to a DRAGON sensor for a fraction of the price of W and Weapon is incredible. I, for one, am extremely excited for RAVEN. I am even more excited to see more people using REDs. It's going to be an amazing year for the community.

totally

I do hope all the new Raven owners will go out into the world as R3D workflow ambassadors. I am sure the ProRes output is a great addition but, honestly, the magic of RED has always been REDcode.

It annoys me no end when people talk about how difficult the RED workflow is. Bullshit. Like anything else, if you take the time to learn a little and do some preparation, it isn't that hard. Like most REDusers I have had people avoid using RED merely because they let themselves be intimidated by what they don't know or what they let others convince them of. Rarely, however, do they admit the real reason - usually it's "I like the look of..." or other drivel.

So, go forth, shoot that Raven and multiply the RED community!

I'm very, very happy to be getting my grubby hands on a Red. I was a day one Ursa 4.6 order- figured it was my last stepping stone until I could justify a Red. Then Raven came along, no brainer. Hoping to get into the first wave. I guess we'll see Thursday-

A glance at my surname will confirm that I concur entirely with this idea.

And rather than all black, they'll have a green flourescence that only shows up when the light strikes it just right. '-)

I pre-ordered in September but withdrew my deposit (and place in line) because I have a project coming up in the early summer I was intending to self-finance, but now that project is going in a better direction so I'll definitely be considering jumping back on the raven train this year. Sucks they are raising the price at NAB :/
